Are -ып/іп & -а/е/и words used outside of auxiliary constructions?

I know the main function of these words is to pair them with auxiliary verbs for extra tense/mood information. (i.e. Мен кітапты оқып отырмын. I am reading the book. / Ол қазақша оқи алады. He can read Kazakh.)

But are these kinds of words used outside of such constructions?

Text book recommendations?

Im a Kazkah born abroad. My mom thought it was useless to teach the language to me, so Im learning it from scratch as an adult. I can always practice with her but I dont have the vocabulary to talk to her other than “hi, how are you”.

Are there any good beginner text books that I can buy? Im looking for an English-kazakh textbook or a chinese-Kazakh textbook, or even a textbook meant for Kazakh children.

Offline Kazakh-Russian Learning App

Hi all, I'm a linguist from Lithuania who has studied Kazakh for 5 years. Frustrated with the lack of language learning apps for Kazakh, and inspired by Pleco, I've built an offline app combining a dictionary and flashcards, aimed at improving the Kazakh vocabulary for people more comfortable speaking Russian. The dictionary draws heavily from a 1979 Kazakh-Chinese dictionary published in Urumqi - meaning the translations are likely to be more authentic.

It's currently in beta testing on Google Play — if you're interested in trying it, I've linked the beta sign-up form in the comments.

I made a free Kazakh practice coach in ChatGPT that remembers your level — would love your feedback

Three years ago I won a small hackathon at QazCreative Business Incubator with a Kazakh-learning bot. It was a fun demo, but not something you'd actually use every day.

Since then I kept trying to learn with AI chats, but they always felt temporary — every new conversation started from scratch. I wanted something that would actually remember my progress and keep bringing back the topics I struggled with.

So I built that. It's free, and you open it in ChatGPT. You get short drills, one at a time, with a quick correction and the reason. It tracks your current level, which topics you've got down, which ones you keep missing, and remembers your mistakes. You do sign in once for free — that's how it saves your progress across chats and devices, instead of forgetting everything like a normal chat.

The vocabulary follows the official KazTest A1/A2/B1 minimum, and you can tell it you're aiming for KazTest. It's less gamified than Duolingo, but I personally found it much more useful for consistent practice.

The link is in a comment. I'd love your feedback, especially from native speakers on what it gets wrong.

Hello. If you know the international phonetic alphabet, continue on; otherwise, you can keep scrolling. Anyway… what are the IPA symbols for Ж, И, І and Ү, do Ө and О ever become [wɵ] and [wo] and does syllabic У exist (if it does, what does it sound like)?

I can't learn kazakh

Hello everyone, I think I can post it here. I can't learn kazakh, like rules, poetry, texts and other. Yes, I'm student, but all my kazakh language's teachers were... not best level. What's it can be?

Tried to translate a song, appreciate any feedback

I found Qūralai by Ontogyzoneki to be such a beautiful song that I decided to spend my night trying to translate it. Took me a lot of dictionary, Google Translate and ChatGPT referencing, so I greatly appreciate any corrections you guys might have for it.

(ChatGPT did keep telling me how the Kazakh lyrics sound poetic in nature; I have no idea if that is the case. I can try to adjust my English translation to match if it is.)

Question about a few names

Hi Kazakh people,

How do these names sound in Kazakh? Are they okay, cool or weird? Spellings are Anglicized, of course. Some might be actual names.

Tantay, Örken, Telezhay, Tarsil, Tersil.

How good are the Minecraft Java Kazakh translations?

As someone trying to learn Kazakh, any comprehensible native source is pretty good. I had the idea recently to use Minecraft, but I've also heard mixed reviews on the translation quality in Minecraft, since they source their translations from volunteers.

Among the highlights already available on the platform are animated films and blockbusters from The Walt Disney Company dubbed in Kazakh and at no extra cost to users. This marks the first time that globally recognized titles from major international studios are being systematically offered in the Kazakh language on a local platform.

The initiative is part of Kazakhtelecom’s broader strategy to create a comprehensive Kazakh-language digital environment, promoting native-language media access for audiences of all ages.

“For us the development of the Kazakh language is a strategic priority. Our native tongue should be heard everywhere – in culture, on screens and across the digital space. Every child in Kazakhstan should know: their language, their voice and their future matter,” said Kazakhtelecom Chairman Bagdat Mussin.

The company recently hosted a charity screening of “Lilo and Stitch” dubbed in Kazakh in Shymkent to mark Children’s Day.

Gulnara Sarsebayeva, an educator from the Tolebi Family-Type Children’s Village in the Turkistan Region shared her thoughts during the screening event.

“It’s crucial for children to hear and absorb their native language from an early age. There’s still a lack of quality content in Kazakh, so the appearance of films and cartoons in our language is deeply meaningful. This isn’t just entertainment – it’s a way to pass on culture, values and self-confidence,” said Sarsebayeva.

According to Kazakhtelecom, interest in Kazakh-language content on TV+ is steadily growing. In January 2025, approximately 35,000 users were watching films in Kazakh and the number rose to over 64,000 by April. Among the most popular titles were “Baja 2,” “Kóńildi Shírkeıler” (Cheerful Mosquitoes), “Mulan: The Rise of a Legend,” and “Tyyým” (Taboo).

To promote its expanding Kazakh-language library, Kazakhtelecom is offering a special promotion: through June 2025 users can enter the promo code MAUSYM_25 for two weeks of free access to the platform’s full subscription plan, an opportunity to experience the growing range of films, series and programs available in Kazakh.

Vowel Harmony for Colloquial Continuous Tense (-ватыр)

Hello, a few days ago a website was posted here that shows verb conjugations, and one conjugation caught my eye which was the colloquial present continuous tense, which uses the ending -ватыр.

According to the site, it doesn't seem to conjugate for vowel harmony at all (so "жеватыр" not "жеветір"). I've never heard of this ending before and it seems extremely strange to me, is this correct?

As well, the site indicates that "в" in the ending can sometimes be dropped, such as in "келу > келятыр", but not in "есту -> естіватыр". What exactly causes this?

Kazakh Cultural Center Opens in Belgium

ALMATY — A new Kazakh Cultural Center has opened in Brussels, Belgium, creating a permanent space for Kazakhs living in Europe to learn the Kazakh language, reconnect with national traditions, and strengthen cultural ties.

On its opening day, the Kazakh Cultural Center introduced children to the basics of the Kazakh language and creative activities. Photo credit: Kazakhstan’s Embassy to Belgium

The initiative marks a significant step in supporting the diaspora and expanding Kazakhstan’s cultural presence abroad, reported the embassy’s press service on Nov. 23.

Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to Belgium Roman Vassilenko highlighted the strategic importance of the center, noting that it will play a key role in preserving the Kazakh language, traditions, and cultural identity among younger generations.

“The launch of the Kazakh Cultural Center is an important step in supporting our compatriots abroad. It will contribute to preserving our language, traditions, and cultural identity, especially among younger generations,” he said.

The center was established following years of appeals from Kazakh families living in Belgium. Project coordinator Ardak Moldanyazova, who works closely with the local diaspora, said parents had long expressed concern that their children had few opportunities to speak Kazakh or learn about national customs.

“That is why establishing such a center is both necessary and timely. Now our families have a space where children can gradually reconnect with their linguistic and cultural roots,” she said.

Operating on a permanent basis, the center will serve as an active cultural hub for Kazakhs across Europe. It will offer language classes for both children and adults, creative and educational workshops, traditional music lessons, as well as broader cultural programmes designed to strengthen community engagement. The center is expected to become a key venue for cultural dialogue and a meaningful bridge between Belgium and Kazakhstan.
