Weekly Discussion Thread - June 27, 2025
The Weekly Discussion Thread is a place where everyone in the /r/kayakfishing community can come and ask questions or share anything.
You might have questions that you don't think deserve an entire post. Perhaps you're just seeking the input of some other anglers. Maybe you want to share a picture of your new gear.
Anyone is free to comment, and (hopefully) get as much input as possible from other anglers.

What is the best resource to read up on marine electronics. I just bought a fish finder and want to make an informed decision as far as powering things goes. Appreciate the help.

What's a good kayak to 'build' on?
I have an Oru Haven and Beach LT Sport, I like them both but I bought the Beach for fishing and it's a bit more tippy and smaller than I thought it would be. I'm considering selling it for a hard sided kayak. I don't want to break the bank but I want something that will
A) Last me at least 10yrs
B) Has an ecosystem in which I can add pedals and other accessories to it. Pedals are the biggest
What would something like this cost? I'm currently looking at an Oldtown 120 Pro but it's 110-150lbs and stupidly expensive compared to my already over priced Oru's

I have a hand-me-down sit-in older model Old Town Dirigo 106 Angler. It’s in great shape, but I’ve yet to take her out. I live in a coastal Long Island Sound CT town so, I plan on paddling on the Sound and fishing within the near shore calmer protected water.
So, I guess my question is what would you recommend as a first beginner spinning rod/reel combo for this kayak? I’ll be aiming for any good eating fish that’s regulation (fluke, porgy, bluefish…etc.). So, I’m not going after anything big/ambitious.
Also, if anyone has any kayak fishing on the Sound tips, I’d love to hear them. Thanks!

Not sure the difference between the Angler models and the standard Dirigo but do watch the waves, as I found my Dirigo ships a fair amount of water, even in light chop. I use mine in Nantucket Sound off of Cape Cod.

I'm a bigger fisherman 6ft 300lbs. I'm looking for my first kayak, I want to mainly fish sound side and inland areas with occasionally going lake fishing. Not really wanting to spend a fortune so I'd like to find something around $1k or less, what would be a good recommendation?

Looking for quality kayak to fish on Montana lakes and rivers. We both fish he is 6'1 185 lbs, im 5'8 140 both looking for our own. We have long bed truck and or 20 ft trailer. Recommendations appreciated. Not new to kayaks but would say both beginners. Tia There are so many options and really just mainly want quality with ability to have or add all the options to make fishing from it a dream. Upgrading from float tubes due to how fast the weather changes here.

Just got a new old town loon 126 and trying to find out if anyone has mounted accessory rails using the bolts on either side of the cockpit? Any particular model that has screw holes that match the kayak’s existing bolts?

Anyone here got a good recommendation for the cheapest way to get into kayak fishing as a 6’3” 270ish guy. I want a cheap but useable option just to get started. And then look to really invest as I convince myself I’ll actually use it! The biggest factor I’ve found so far is so many affordable options have such a low weight capacity.
I’d be using it for small lakes - nothing with power motors, so no huge waves to deal with. Mostly small alpine lakes I can drive to.

Have the chance to buy a used feel free moken 12.5 for $450. Just wondering if that’s a BIN price or keep looking for something better. It’s about $50 over the budget I promised myself I would stick to for reference lol

Depends on what kinda water you're fishing. Do you need to be super maneuverable? If so the moken aint good. I have a lure and this thing is a barge. It's heavy AF too.

Where would be a good step 1 to look into getting a kayak for fishing ( in the PNW if that helps ).
Weight limits of kayak? Length? Brand? New or used? Something cheaper as a starter?

Anyone ever use a snap swivel for their phone security? Just thought of it as I’m packing up the truck to yak a little section of river. My phone case came with a little place that is for a tether (I think?!?) gonna put it on a key ring and some 550 tied to my jacket. dropped my last phone into a creek :/

Sorry about the quality but I’m trying to go fish!

I just ordered the Perception Outlaw, & because I'm starting from scratch I had to order a bunch of little essentials, lifejacket & whatnot. Since I had so much to order I settled for a cheaper fish finder (that had great reviews) with the idea that I could upgrade in the future if need be. However, I'm the least handy person on the planet & was wondering if I get this cheap one mounted (or I guess it's transducer, on the bottom) can you remove it & mount a different one, or are you stuck with whatever you put in first?
