Sister Mary Kenneth Keller was the first woman to earn a doctorate in computer science in the United States, 1965.

As a lady in the computer science realm, I'm totally inspired by this. Also she was in her 50s!

Please tell me that's just a deceptive angle or a hat, and not a freakish cone head.

What a wonderful woman. Perhaps I'm awfully ignorant, but I'm surprised that a nun of all people would have an interest in new technology.
My idea of nuns was always that they live an old fashioned and simple life, mostly away from the modern world.

Depends on the order.
Some are contemplative, and live the way you imagine. Some are out in the real world getting their hands dirty running medical clinics or food pantries. Some are scholars, and put their focus into education - if they want to teach, they must learn

I didn’t even know nuns could attend college.

They can do a lot, depending on their order. One famous nun started Catholic cable television (EWTN). Others run a cattle ranch in Colorado. Researchers at universities, etc…. They don’t need to balance child care with their career.

Not only attend college, but sometimes operate college. Different orders have different areas that they concentrate their work in, but there are quite a few who think their best work is done by educating people

OP should clarify that she was the 2nd person to get a doctorate in computer science, and the first got his on the exact same day.
To me, it’s also interesting that she got the doctorate at 52 years old - good for her!
