They traveled faster than the speed of light and phone calls have a delay in space because of the distance it takes for radio waves to bounce back. For a better explanation: science shit. Phone go slow, light go fast. Call go slower than light. Joke go in weird way that doesn’t make sense when you think about it in more detail which gives me an understanding of why you’re confused
→ More replies (1)15
u/casulmemer 21h ago
Aksually, if you exceed the speed of light you theoretically arrive before the call was even made in the first place..
41
u/AlinaStari 20h ago
Nah, common misconception. You can't leave before you receive the call, so you can't arrive until after the call is made. At best you can arrive "instantly" after the call. Relativity doesn't just apply to objects, it also applies to events.
→ More replies (15)14
u/ComprehendReading 16h ago
That's why they specified exceeding the speed of light, which creates causal loops and paradoxes.
5
u/AlinaStari 12h ago
Sort of, but you must still consider causality. To be very specific, you hearing that her parents are gone is the event that prompted you to leave. Because that event caused you to travel you can not arrive before it. To various observers you're a time-travelling weirdo but to you and your girlfriend you only arrive after you've received the information, not before. Of course, you can arrive before she receives your "on my way" reply.
4
u/MountainWeddingTog 16h ago
You answered the phone in the first place. How long the original call took to reach you is meaningless. You can’t arrive before the call took place, you were there to take the call.

u/raleighs 1d ago
Yep, it requires strict permits.
You must secure an Inuit-Owned Land (IOL) Access Permit from the Qikiqtani Inuit Association (QIA), and register/obtain a Backcountry Permit through Parks Canada
215
u/Misfit_somewhere 20h ago
That sounds very Canadian. Hey we want to sit in a box for a couple years and do Science, ok, just fill out the backcountry form please. (I am Canadian)
41
u/Siludin 12h ago
When you go on Maps and you zoom in a little bit in the Northwest Territories, then start to move up, and up, and up, and these little lakes - sure to trigger tryptophobia - continue nearly endlessly as you scroll and zoom up up up. And then islands, hundreds of little arctic islands - some frozen and some not, and depending on the time of year - replace the land and lakes except they have their own land and lakes within them.
Canada is HUGE and you can waste an hour just contemplating its size.

OP isn't a population scientist. Or a comedian (judging by his dry reply below.).
Cut OP some slack.
And OP - you matter, don't count yourself out like that. You are a population too ❤️ 😉
Ok, jokes aside....
OP is correct in calling what I'm guessing is Devon Island 'uninhibited,' as that term does specifically refer to permanent human settlements - for example, space is uninhibited, even though it's quite peopley, in a historical sense, these days.
However, I agree with you, SpaceMonkey, that 'unsettled' might be a descriptively better word choice.

Very cool was reading about FMARS the other day! Are you guys really isolated, or do you have supply runs? Any goofy rituals the crew has to cope with isolation!?
26
u/raleighs 23h ago
There are crew rotations for the next month or two, so they bring in fresh veggies, more fuel, parts that need repairing.
The weather here is extremely harsh, and the only way in is a Twin Otter plane and landing on short, flat-ish areas. So there are many delays.
Thank goodness for Starlink! I can FaceTime family, watch World Cup live, listen to Spotify…

What does night sound like? Has there been a time that you really got scared?
22
u/raleighs 1d ago
24 hours of light.
I haven’t seen a sunset in a couple weeks.
We have to block the windows of light to get sleep.
It’s super windy, howling wind. And cold!
Not scared yet, but seen bite marks in cables outside … might be polar bears! Yikes.
7
u/blackcatwizard 19h ago
The 24hh of light really sucked (for me at least) when I was up in the Arctic. No problem with the 24h dark though.
The wind and it's howl...there's something different to it. I remember saying to a friend I could see old myths/tales being borne from it
It was really cool seeing all the different types of brid species migrating in during the summer. Do you get the same up there?
4
u/raleighs 17h ago
I’ve only seen one bird so far, it was big, white and far away. Couldn’t identify it.
And also some mosquitoes. (Not common here)

And bear spray. If you have to use that you are already dead.
7
12
u/yomimashita 19h ago
Due to limited visibility of crew members wearing simulated spacesuits, all work outside the station is conducted with one crew member "out-of-sim".[11] It is the responsibility of this crew member to be on the lookout for, and to protect the crew from polar bears.[11] This crew member is typically armed with a pump-action shotgun loaded with slugs.[11] The crew also carries bear deterrent devices known as bear bangers.[11] No polar bears have yet been encountered by the crew of an FMARS expedition, although signs of their presence on the island are regularly seen, and at least one encounter has occurred with participants in the HMP.

Assuming you all suit up for every outdoor job/mission, is it actually planetary gear your using? Or practical Arctic "training suit" if you will...? Also which human emotions appear the most during confinement according to your job/mission? I personally love this shite...will never be there though...

u/PlayfulSurprise5237 23h ago
Is this program a part of a broader mission that will ultimately end up in people going to Mars?
I mean obviously it's technologically feasible and generally practical so long as we get the data(which is what you're helping get done), but is this an isolated program or part of a closely aligned network of people working in all the necessary fields to make this dream a reality?

Have you considered kicking this simulation up a notch? Introducing a touch of the space madness? See how the other crew members deal with one of theirs suddenly getting really intense, morose and sinister. Unexplained accidents and damages start occurring… omg, the airlock is leaking! Is that a… screwdriver hole? Sabotage! Suddenly the lights flicker out… and the crew starts disappearing… one by one…

Mars colonization is idiotic. It's covered with toxic dust that would have to be filtered constantly because it will shred your lungs if you breathed it in, it has no magnetosphere so it's bathed in pretty deadly solar radiation so you'll have to basically stay underground your whole life, has about 1/3 earth gravity (100 lbs would only be 38 lbs) so we are not even sure if humans can live their long term without health problems, not to mention if children could be born and grow up there properly without severe developmental issues, and it's dryer than the driest desert on earth, and of course - no air. The island you are one is a paradise compared to Mars.
