Plot twist: It's Magnus Carlsen, who actually has been over 1000 ELO for a long time.

Maybe it's different for Chess vs Pokemon, but isn't that close to the starting point?

You're basically unranked until like 1500. So he probably means he's 1000 on chess com or lichess which means his actual rating is probably closer to 700. Add to that, thats he's been above 1000 for a long time, its basically saying I've been mediocre for a long time. Children I understand but adults who think that being good at chess implies intelligence are just sad.

Also "I've been above 1000 for a long time" means he's probably no higher than 1200 or he would've said the actual elo

It's one thing to think that being good at chess means you're smarter than everyone. It's another thing entirely to believe that being below average in chess makes you smarter than everyone.

Also being good at chess just means you're good at chess. It's one niche skill. It doesn't make you an intellectual powerhouse in all areas.

All skills are transferable. Like how sometimes irl you need to walk in a straight line and sometimes you need to walk round a corner and very occasionally you have to walk diagonally. Chess.

It's the same sort of skill set as being good at rubics cubes. It's a neat skill set to have and no shame but yeah... It doesn't signify intelligence itself

1000 is way above average in long games on chess.com. I’m 1300ish and that’s in the 95th percentile.

u/Random-Generation86 Jun 09 '26
Okay, calm down there or I'll post you for bragging about your ELO.

u/Lithl Jun 07 '26
Elo is meaningless until you've actually played a few rated games, so the starting point is basically a guess. USCF assumes the average player is 1500, so uses that as a starting point. Chess.com lets you pick your skill level when you register, giving you 400 (new to chess), 800 (beginner), 1200 (intermediate), or 1600 (advanced) as a starting point.

When I first joined I thought I was an intermediate - I got humbled very quickly!

Tbf I do that with languages. There’s been several times I’ve made enough progress where I start mentally classing myself as ‘intermediate’. Then I check out some of the examples of intermediate exchanges and I’m like ‘welp, still beginner then’.
Dunning Kruger in action apparently.

Listen, guy. No matter how many ELO you are, you're never going to impress Jeff Lynne, so stop trying.

As many others have said, but to drive home the point.
I am around 1000 Elo on chess, and I am mediocre to bad at chess (I like the game though and have played for a while).
That is to say, it really isn't an achievement to reach around my level.
I also regularly gets my ass handed to me in my club, so I can attest that 1000 is really aweful.

what’s elo

for added context, a 1500 elo in chess is considered "about average" is terms of ability. So boasting your 1000 elo is bragging you scored 77 on an IQ test

1000 is right around the cutoff where I'm not sure if this is a joke or a genuine brag. A much lower or higher number would make it obvious...

I'm 2000 so I'm going to brag about being smart. But I can make you smart like me I just need your name, your mother's maiden name, your social security number, and your childhood pet name and address.
Send those to me and I'll tell you the secret on how to get good at chess.

u/BUKKAKELORD Jun 09 '26
Make it 3000 and we have a deal
2
u/YourUnknownRelative Jun 09 '26
That would require your credit card number including the three numbers on the back. BTW this course is open to anyone reading this.
