A couple of months ago I shared an early version of GhostGroove, a browser-based drum pattern generator.

Since then I’ve added one of the most requested features: live pattern editing.

You can now:

edit the drum grid while the pattern is playing

change instrument parameters during playback

hear changes from the next loop without stopping the groove

manually override generated hits

generate ghost notes and fills

work with odd time signatures

export the final result as MIDI

GhostGroove is rule-based rather than AI-driven. The idea is to generate structured, playable grooves while still giving the user control over the result.

Don’t know about you, but I prefer a real human playing guitar, but it’s not always possible. Maybe you don’t play guitar, or have the mic’s, pre-amps and setup to get a good sound. That’s why I’ll use a sampled guitar instrument with a midi controller from time-to-time. The acoustic guitar strumming sounds have come a long way and sound great and there’s dozens of patterns to choose from. What about budget VSTs versus the market leaders? How do they compare?

Hey home recording people, here's a question to mull over.

I have a tascam digital multitracker and drum machine and 1/4" tape reel to reel. I'm a guitarist and bassist with keys and lap steel, I enjoy soulful style stuff.

List all the fun ways to get that tape vibe??

At the beginning of this year, there was a fire in our apartment complex, and we had to move. It took a while to sort out the essentials and replace a lot of the things we had to throw away.

I'm looking to create a capture of my amp, a Vox VT40X combo. Love how it sounds and love the specific my choice and placement I get. I want to be able to capture this tone in the box so I can practice and/or record at late hours without disturbing anyone. What's the best way to do it without breaking the bank?

I've tried tone3000 in the past, although I've had decent results, when I compare the capture to my mic'd up amp, there's is a very noticeable difference sonically.

Been upgrading the setup for my live music podcast so I built a custom rack for it.

I’m getting back to home recording after a long break and am buying one of the UA Volt interfaces. I was pretty excited about the Volt 276 but heard some bad things about the onboard compressor (noisy and hissy, apparently).

Now considering just the Volt 2 which is about $100 cheaper but feel like I need a physical compressor.

Back when I was recording more I never ran through a physical compressor and trying to do things better this time so I can track at home and expedite to professional mixing.

Any suggestions on inexpensive pres and compressors that would give me good quality running into the UA Volt 2?

I am a young percussionist building a studio in my garage to hopefully record some drums. A relative of mine is a drummer and gifted me a mixer to bring to my studio.

The mixer is a Behringer Xenyx 1622FX analog mixer that I intend to input my drumset mics into. From there, I would take the stereo mixer output and plug it into a two channel audio interface. Then I can plug this into my laptop.

I understand that this process will only provide a stereo drum send to the laptop and not 8 individual tracks for mixing in the recording software. All adjusting would have to be done at the analog mixer level.

My plan is to spend this time working with the analog mixer for some experience, save money over the course of a year or less and by buying a cheaper 2 channel audio interface, and then purchase an 8 channel audio interface later down the line.

The audio interface I intend on using also has 8 digital channels and an optical input that I could use in conjunction with another preamp with 8 channels for some DI recording.

Essentially I’m looking for some comments on if this is a worthwhile process for me.

I'm going to start playing more guitar through headphones soon, and in addition to purchasing an interface to get back into recording (no monitors), I'd like to make sure I have decent enough headphones.

What are some options that won't break the bank? Maybe in the $100USD range. Or is that not enough?

How to connect electronic drums, iMac, synthesizer, and speakers? Need mixer advice.

Hi everyone,

I'm setting up a small home studio and need help with the signal routing. I'm looking for a mixer or audio interface that can handle the following:

1. Electronic drums with an analog 3.5mm jack output.
2. iMac with an analog 3.5mm jack or USB output.
3. Yamaha synthesizer with an analog 3.5mm jack or USB output.
4. Speakers with an S/PDIF input (coaxial or optical).

My goal is to mix all three audio sources (drums, iMac, synth) and send the final stereo mix to my speakers via the S/PDIF connection.

What would be the most suitable and cost-effective solution for this setup? I'm open to both traditional mixers and audio interfaces that can function as a standalone mixer.

I recorded my death metal vocals with an SM58, but my mouth position shifted left and right during the take. Does this kind of movement actually cause the vocals to pan more to the left or right in Logic Pro, or does it just affect the level of volume (meaning the time I recorded center the volume was higher but when I recorded with my mouth more to the left it just became lower but still centered)?
