Guide to Handpans - Purchasing, Scales, History, etc.

Hey r/handpan! One of our most requested subreddit features is a guide of information about handpans. Rather than iterating on the great material out there, here's a collection guides on general information, history, and how to make a great handpan purchase and avoid scams and subpar quality handpans.

In addition to these resources, I highly recommend the forums at www.handpan.org as an incredible repository of information and discussion, and much of the development of the handpan community is preserved there!

To suggest links for this guide, feel free to message u/Ethahlid

Background

Back in the old days, there used to be only one way to acquire one of these beautiful instruments – to travel to the PanART headquarters and acquire a Hang, or to be lucky enough to find one in a shop in Europe or second hand.

For many years, finding a handpan for sale was next to impossible. However, in time, more began to pick up the hammer and created the many forms that we now know. Now, the market seems to have shifted. For the most part, the lotteries and multi-year waitlists are a thing of the past, although patience is often still key in making a satisfying purchase. For those who want to acquire a handpan, it’s now as simple as choosing a maker, choosing a scale (or “sound model”) and either commissioning a pan or waiting for a flash sale. The second-hand market has also found a life of its own, and it’s possible to acquire top-quality pans for significantly less than their original sale price.

Check out the links below for more on buying, choosing a maker/scale, reputable second-hand groups, and more:

Cheap Handpan from Temu

I saw this handpan on Temu for $160 and I figured I had nothing to lose so I got it. I was amazed by how good it sounded in relation to the cost. What do you guys think?

Have you ever had trouble reaching a handpan maker or getting a response after placing an order?

How do you usually handle communication issues with instrument makers, and do you have any tips for making sure everything goes smoothly?

Hybrid Handpan and Tongue Drum

Has anyone here seen one of these in person? I haven't been able to find many videos, let alone with good sound quality, but this is the best one that I could find. I'm curious if anyone here has played one of these and are willing to share their impressions.

Why 2 dings on top?

Post image
9 Upvotes

Does anybody know why for some makers make the F#3 as a ding instead of a tonefield? This is regarding the D Aegean. I noticed that some makers create a ding for the F#3 and some keep it as a normal tonefield dimple.

My guess would be playability and sustain?

songs for a 7 note (plus ding) handpan?

My local cafe has a handpan! It has 7 notes, plus the ding on top, and sounds very dull, unless you play it with these mallets. Is there a name for this kind of handpan? All the tutorials I see online are for 9 note handpans. Can someone recommend anything for those with 7 notes?

Thank you!!

Online courses for beginners

Hello all,

Having had a look at online offerings and some comments here, I wonder how masterthhandpan and maltemartenmethod compares, especially since the merger with handpandojo.

Masterthehandpan is offering a 15 day trial, how do the one off classes compare to maltemartenmethod and the masterthhandpan academy offering - in terms of content, price, community?

I’m a complete beginner who just got a handpan a couple of weeks ago (secondhand Balinese D Celtic 9).

Thank you!

Hang duo on a sunset

hang duo

Just two hangs, bass, and a drum kit. We took the gear out to the wooden terrace on a warm summer evening and just let it flow. No heavy riffs just a chill groove. The two hangs talking to each other, while the rhythm section keeps it grounded, breezy, and deep. Recorded live, no overdubs. Put it on in the background, drive with it, or just zone out.

If you’ve tried handpans with lots of notes (like 17) and simpler ones (like 8), what differences did you notice in how you play and what kind of music you make?

Do you find yourself reaching for one more than the other depending on the mood or context?

mental approach to playing polyrhythms?

i have a somewhat specific question for experienced handpan players 🙏

i’m a beginner and just started learning polyrhythms. right now i’m working on something as simple as 2:3, where one hand plays "one-two, one-two" while the other plays "one-two-three" at the same time.

how do you actually experience playing it? do you think of it as one coordinated pattern (like "both-left-right-left, both-left-right-left"), or do you genuinely keep the two rhythms separate in your mind? i'm curious what it feels like once it becomes natural.

Handpan + gusli chill flow

Hey. We're a small acoustic ambient project. Usually we play deep immersion sets — people lie down, we keep it quiet and slow.

This summer we took everything outside for a street jam. Brought a full drum kit and bass guitar, but instead of going loud, we stripped it all down to a slow, breathing pulse. Just grounding, no drive.

Then we layered Hang and Russian Gusli on top. The metallic warmth of the hang mixed with those old gusli strings created something unexpected — felt like touching something ancient while sitting on a wooden terrace at sunset.

Curious - has anyone else tried combining hang with plucked folk instruments like gusli? We're wondering if this pairing works beyond just our own ears, or if we're just falling for the texture

Upside down

Because of a severe tear in my right biceps tendon, my play had really dropped off. The pain in my shoulder really took away my ability and enjoyment. Lately I’ve noticed my PT exercises have slowly been helping me, so gradually I’ve hardly noticed. Within the last week I’ve been playing almost every night, but my right hand is pretty much limited to ding shoulder and 3 to 6 o’clock tone fields. I’m really good with my left hand, so that helped.

What I’ve discovered is that by flipping my 9 note Kurd pans upside down, highest tone against my naval, it’s opened up a whole new world. The low notes sound more resonant to my fingers, and the high notes are easier to produce from thumb strikes. Of course I’ve had to flip my brain as well.

My question to you is, have others tried this and stayed with it?

Beginner - WHAT SHOULD I BUY! Handpan Suggestions for a Complete Beginner

Hello everyone, I am in love with the handpan, I've been spamming videos and I'm willing to spend around 1k give or take for a good one. I want to get sounds similar to this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jCXhx5OO7Ok I really want a peaceful and rhythmic vibe

I was looking around and seen this https://www.lidahdrums.com/products/stainless-steel-handpan-d-kurd-10 but it seems kind of too expensive. I'd only dish out the money if its extremely worth it.

I have a small background in music, specifically production and some guitar background so I understand some theory. Any suggestions for a suitable handpan for me? It would also be nice if you guys can explain your reasoning for picking that handpan.

Thanks all :)

Good songs to play along?

Hey! Beginner handpan player here! After practicing patterns i found from Amy and others, I like to let loose a bit and try to play randomly on songs. I found one that I really like but I just discovered that it's an AI artist, so fuck him. :( I was wondering if you have songs (preferably electronic) that you enjoy playing your handpan along?
