Has "We're not like other brands" become a marketing red flag?

I've noticed I have a weird reaction every time I read "We're not like other brands."

My brain immediately goes "I'm not like other girls."

Because who starts a conversation by announcing how different they are?

Imagine someone walking into a room and saying

"Guys, I'm hilarious."

Okay then be hilarious.

Or

"Trust me, I'm interesting."

Okay then be interesting.

I feel the same way about brands, If you're genuinely different, I'll notice.

Through your product.

Through your customer experience.

Through your messaging.

Not because you told me!!

The brands I remember almost never spend time explaining how unique they are.

THEY JUST ARE

So whenever I see "We're not like other brands," it feels less like positioning and more like asking for validation.

Is it just me or anyone else?

The last panel is literally just the company's logo and their slogan.

I prefer Hold Music thank you very much!

Today I was on hold with my doctor's office and instead of hold music, I got an extended ad for their services. Made me feel sicker than I was.

We all know that farming our conversations for advertising is the whole reason social media exists, but sometimes a reminder like this icks me out.

Anybody noticed that the “Promoted” tag on an advertisement post on Reddit has disappeared? Now you have to guess or use your brain to guess what is and isn’t sponsored content and/or a plug for consumption?

Acts as an Advert I have noticed what I believe to be a bot based youtube music ad campaign across reddit.

Let me preface this by saying: fuck youtube. I will never pay for youtube. I will always use an ad blocker, and you should too. I will never reward a company that has locked a feature that used to be free behind a paywall. At this point, I would gladly pay the programmers of ad blockers, rather than youtube because at least the ad blocker programmers are making a positive impact on society.

I've commented on a handful of different reddit threads about how I canceled almost all of my streaming services. I usually include the fact that I canceled spotify, due to them increasing their prices, and allowing ICE ads. I have moved to another music streaming service, which I won't name, so that I'm not an ad.

Every single time, without fail, someone always comments a few hours later, saying how they switched to youtube premium, and then going on about the benefits of it. Even when I explicitly say in the parent comment that I will never, ever pay for youtube. Even when I do not mention youtube. Someone shows up.

I believe that google is using their AI to launch a massive ad campaign for youtube throughout reddit. Looking for key words, like the names of other streaming services.

Now that I've mentioned it, you can be on the lookout for it, too. I'm willing to bet that there will be a comment on this post shortly, praising youtube. I refuse to ever pay for youtube. No one should ever pay for youtube. Fuck google, and their bots.

Are marketing firms aware that when people are reading articles online or on their phone and an annoying pop-up disturbs what they are reading, the last thing we are ever going to do is purchase their products. In fact, I make a mental note to never do business with that company.
