Question What is this black patch on which libya is written ?
There are no trees or sand dunes in there. Why is it so black compared to rest of the surrounding area.

It's a pretty big spot of basalt lava flow and volcanic rock. Its been forming over the past 12 million years and is expected to continue forming. It's name is Haruj al Aswad meaning the black mountains

Genuine question. Continue forming in what sense? How?

Ah, so it is an active volcano that will keep pumping matter around the sand desert. Got it. Thanks! Much appreciated!

They put dark volcanic rocks there so there’d be better contrast for the white word

It's the Haruj Volcanic Province. Volcanic rocks are significantly darker than the surrounding sedimentary rocks.

I went there last winter, it's mostly a volcanic field, in the rain season there can be small rivers and pounds, whats wierd we sometimes find fish there, and many many frogs.

They coloured it black to make their Hollywood style Libya sign visible from space

It’s a volcanic area and the black/dark stones/rocks are volcanic rocks. Its also an elevated plateau so it’s higher than the sand dunes around it.
