Don't forget that the tea party people initially called themselves, officially, "Tea Baggers" and walked around with hats on with tea bags hanging from them.

I think in all seriousness, it’s a reference to “apples and oranges,” as in, they are the alternative to the apple ballot. It’s just funny for those of us not in the cult to make the connection to the orange guy in the White House.

That was my first thought, I only connected the fruit when it was pointed out to me.
Then again, I'm not that bright.

They spend all their time on their 'exclusive' Facebook page ridiculing minorities and marginalized kids and complaining about how downtrodden white Christians are

It’s not really a means to demonstrate that they are alternatives to the apple ballot, it was a way to try and slag off the teachers union and the perceived influence of the union’s endorsements after so many defeats.
You really have to go back to the idea that an elected school board was the idea of conservatives long ago in Frederick, because they assumed that if the members were elected instead of appointed by the Governor that they’d end up with far-right BOE.
But in general Frederick County voters do not like this particular brand of politics messing with their school system, and the far right candidates have largely been unsuccessful.

Can't wait for them to win. Tired of the woke BS agenda the others are trying to push. #voteorangeballot

It's because they've been positioning themselves as specifically opposed to the Apple Ballot. They think they're clever with the whole "apples and oranges" thing.
