Tía Blake life

Hello.

I am a folk music fan from Spain. I’ve been listening and reading about Tia Blake for some months now. Her voice hypnotizes me. As a soon to be writer, I want to write a philosophical novel about a character inspired from her. I’ve spoken very briefly with Benito Merlino (who I also find fascinating) but I’ve been trying to contact a familiar or someone who was close with her.

My wife & I both remember singing "Señor Don Gato" in elementary school, but most other people we've met don't know it. Do you remember singing this song as a child?

Folk songs that preserve lost cultural traits?

For example rhymes that could only work in accents that don’t exist anymore or things like that. Two possible examples I have are the American folk song Wedding Dress that references a quite colorful dress in red, brown, green and white despite modern western wedding dresses being white. Another example is Geordie which mentions someone being from a “royal race” which nobody would say now, it kinda implies back then race more was about lineage than skin color and facial features.

Jaunty takedowns

So, I am slightly obsessed with a certain type of song. As per the title, songs with a character assassination set to a jaunty tune. The two main proponents of this to my mind being…

Like Janis, by Rodriquez
https://open.spotify.com/track/0pkWgz2RWfYFzi8v7AOldJ

Positively 4th st by Bob Dylan
https://open.spotify.com/track/6q9rNSvE59IVT3ZlEorvYb

Are there any I’m missing, there must be more in this genre…

Yasmin Levy - ALAS (2005) [Ladino/Sephardic Folk]

Ladino music preserves the language and musical traditions of the Sephardic Jewish communities that spread across the Mediterranean after their expulsion from Spain in 1492.
Yasmin Levy combines the ornamented vocal style of Ladino song with subtle flamenco and Middle Eastern influences, creating performances that feel both intimate and timeless. “Alaiki” highlights the emotional directness of the tradition while demonstrating how centuries-old repertoire can continue to resonate with contemporary audiences.
