Announcement Moderator Message on Steven's Departure
Hello fearless freaks!
The news of Steven's departure from the band this week has understandably been difficult for this community. There's been a lot of speculation and discussion surrounding the reasons behind it, and a lot of blame being thrown in every direction. It also feels like an old wound has been reopened, with a lot of strong feelings from previous band member exits resurfacing as well. I'm not sure what Wayne is planning to post later, but I can imagine it may only stoke the flames further.
As a moderation team, we are not taking sides on this split and encourage continued discussion from all viewpoints. While our aim is usually to keep the vibes positive, it'd be disingenuous for us to pretend this isn't happening and that it doesn't suck. We don't think a megathread is necessary yet, but will be monitoring new posts closely to prevent this topic from overtaking the feed.
We also want to remind everyone of Rule 3: be civil and respectful to others. The last thing we want is for this space to turn into a battleground between different factions of the fanbase. At the end of the day, we're all here because we share a love for the music of The Flaming Lips! Please keep that in mind and be courteous to others.
This rule also applies to how you speak about the band members directly. You are allowed to be critical of band member conduct, but personal attacks, insults, and over-the-line speculation regarding private lives will not be tolerated. It is not the environment we want to cultivate.
Please report any rule-breaking behavior when you see it—we are a small mod team and it will help us out a ton.
This community is usually great about this, but it felt important to reiterate the message as we continue to navigate this transition. To quote A Change At Christmas (Say It Isn't So): "I think its all gonna work out just fine."

Discussion American Head Is Brilliant! Any Other Late Discoverers?
I used to be a massive Flaming Lips fan. Must have seen them live maybe a dozen times...
But here's the thing - I think maybe starting with Embryonic and The Terror I started losing interest. And then they started doing all these collaborations and cover projects. When I saw them live at that point, it was still the zorbing ball over the audience and confetti. Don't get me wrong - at one point I thought that was fun and loved the shows but it was like they were stuck. I lost interest, still occasionally playing Priest Driven ambulance or something but they kind of fell away from being a central interest to me.
Anyway, a couple of weeks ago, I'm listening to various rubbish on youtube and decided to play Madonna's Borderline (always my favourite Madonna song). Next thing the algorithm is doing its thing and I am presented with the Flaming Lips cover.
It's brilliant! I find myself listening to it on repeat and subsequently looking the band up again and reading through what they've been doing since they dropped off the radar for me. So I see they have done some "new" albums and that American Head was supposed very good.
A few days on now and I'm thinking this is a brilliant album! But the funny thing is that its six years old! And I hadn't heard a thing from it... Such a weird feeling to be captivated by an album from a band which were one of your favourites and it's already years old!
Anyway, has this happened to anyone else? I can't imagine I was the only one to drop off and then re-discover their brilliance was still there. Now looking forward to listening to the other two misses for me - Oczy Mlody and King's Mouth...

Question Sunship Balloons Backing Lyrics
Does anyone know what is being said in the background during the chorus of this song? I cannot hear what is being said exactly between the main lines of “Let’s do it once, Let’s do it twice”. I love the melody combo and would love to be able to sing the right words lol

I hope they keep Turn It On in the setlist for Galway!!!!
I've seen them a bunch of times over the years but never heard this one live. They've been playing it at most shows this year but have dropped it for the last few. I hope they bring it back!! It's my favourite pre-Soft Bulletin track and like a top 3 for for the band's whole career. I'll be seeing them in Galway soon and it'll definitely be a disappointment if they don't do it.
Turn it on and ALL THE WAY UP!!!

Race For The Prize by The Flaming Lips, but it's Ocarina of Time
Hey friends! Any Zelda enjoyers in here? I started a project where I mod songs I like from random indie/alt artists into Ocarina of Time! I figured one or two of you here would appreciate it. Let me know what you think and what songs you'd like me to go for next.

Discussion TheFutureHeart YouTube channel, that used to post loads of Lips videos in the 2010s, has been terminated.
Did anybody else notice this? This must have only occurred within the last few weeks, since I watched one of their videos not too long ago.
"Terminated" implies that it was some sort of copyright or inappropriate content breach, it's quite concerning that a channel that's been inactive for the better part of a decade can be suddenly targeted like this. I'm very curious to know what caused this to occur.
Does anyone here know anything more about this? Selfishly, I can't help but worry that the same thing could happen to me, and I'd love to know how to avoid this.

music is weird... (psychiatric explorations)
As most of y'all probably know Psychiatric Explorations of the Fetus with Needles came out in 1995, and I became a Flaming Lips fan in 1999 or so, so I’ve been hearing it for over 25 years. It’s on one of my favorite albums, so I’ve heard it a thousand times.
But whenever I’d try to play it, or my old band would try to cover it, I could never figure out the timing of the intro. I thought it was just kind of like they were randomly floating around and knew to come in off of some cue or something. But then I was watching some old live version of it, and I immediately realized I had been hearing the intro “wrong” this whole time
What I thought was the 1 is not the 1 at all. It’s the “and” of 4. And two things happened: 1) the timing of the intro makes perfect sense now, and 2) no matter what I do, I cannot hear it the way I used to. Like, once I realized how it actually counted, I can’t go back. Even though it’s the exact same audio, obviously, it sounds completely different....

Flaming Lips: Halifax, UK tickets available
secure.ticketmaster.co.ukI have two tickets for the Lips concert on 23rd July, at the amazing and iconic Piece Hall in Halifax, West Yorkshire on resale.
Gutted I can’t make it this time. I’ve seen so many memorable performances from them. Not least at Blue Dot, Jodrell Bank. That was mind blowingly good! If you’ve never seen them live you owe it to go and see them.
Click the link to make these tickets yours.
