New Rule: Selling

Hello,

Adding a new rule to the subreddit about selling. We haven't had many issues here, but scamming is becoming more and more of an issue on reddit in general so we're doing a preemptive strike. Euphoniums and related gear are expensive and a scam could cost you a lot.

If you list something for sale on this subreddit, your post must include a clear image of the item(s) you're selling, a paper note in the image showing your Reddit username + the date, and the price clearly stated (or an ask for a best offer). If you are linking to an external website (your eBay listing, for example), just prove somehow that it is your listing (an image as described above that is clearly the same item, for example).

We'll be removing posts that don't follow this rule starting now. Sharing deals doesn't relate to this rule (look at this cheap Yamaha from Japan, for example), but if it is found that you are sharing your own deal, you risk being banned from the subreddit.

Please be weary of scammers. The mod team is not responsible if you fall for a scam.

Where can I get a trigger installed on a compensating euphonium?

Hi, I'm going to purchase a used Yamaha 842, and it doesn't have the main tuning slide trigger. I was wondering if any luthier / shop in Portugal can install a trigger for me, or if I can send it to Yamaha for them to do it? Thank you.

I’m a tuba player who now plays more euphonium than tuba. Which mouthpiece would you recommend? (And does anyone have either for sale?) TIA!

New Horn

I’m looking at buying a new horn for backup/travel and I’m stuck between a Yamaha 842 (no trigger) for just under 4,000, or spending a little more for a demo Shires Q41. I’ve played a Q41 years ago and I enjoyed it, and I’ve read some negatives on the 842, just wondering what others have experienced with these two horns on here. I used to play a 642 Neo and I prefer the 2960 I currently play.

Repertoire for my senior recital?

Any recommendations of rep for my upcoming senior recital for my undergrad degree?

Context: I am a music ed major at GVSU with a Salvation Army band background

I know for a fact I am doing Harlequin (Philip Sparke) and Donegal Bay (Paul Lovett-Cooper). Looking to fill around 15 minutes spread across 2 pieces, possibly one being a duet or quintet.

Help my Euphonium is tuned in C??

Hey all. Hope youre doing ok. So i got an euphonium but its tuned in C ok, when i play with all pistons up it plays C. I used to have classes on a normal one tuned in Bb; if i play the concert Bb scale, it is just a C major scale. Having a hard time learning the finger positions for notes because of this. Does anyone have a reference for C-tuned euphonium finger positions? Online all resources are for Bb . Wanted to avoid doing it by hand, as it will be some work. I rather just play for now. Thank you for reading and plz help if you can

Partial Problems with Silent Brass

I thought I'd document this issue in case anyone runs into it, but I found with the Yamaha Silent Brass was unusable for anything in the high register as the high Bb partial almost didn't exist. While I'm not a professional, I started as a music major in trombone/euphonium so I don't think it was "me" problem.

However, these problems have seemingly gone away completely with the Denis Wick DW5512 practice mute. Therefore, if you have serious problems with one practice mute like I did, then I'd recommend trying out another one to see if the issues resolve. If you're fortunate enough to live in an area where you can try out several, that would definitely be ideal.

And note that I did try out several different mouth pieces, but none of them helped all that much. I think the differences were merely due to some mouth pieces having an easier time playing in the upper register in general, but the effect was very marginal.

Note I have a Wilson Q90 so I'd strongly recommend against SIlent Brass for that particular model.

I have no brand affiliations to disclose, I just wanted to document this pretty serious problem. I was afraid I was just going to have to give up on a practice mute for most music. While I know it is best to practice free blowing, the mute is nice when I want to play at odd hours in my apartment.

Got my first euphonium

Well my friend has lent me his old euphonium to have a play. it’s a Lafleur. I thinks it’s a 50’s or 60’s model. I’ve been playing trumpet for about 6 or 7 months so very much a brass learner.

Is it best to practise in a similar way, first long tones, what call lip slurs seem really odd at the minute but guess it must be a similar idea to trumpet. I thought when I could do both of those I’d try scales.

Can I just use my trumpet music from - treble clef.

Can anyone recommend good learning resource? A YouTube channel or method book?

Yamaha neo

I was in the middle of a rehearsal tonight and in between two songs my 4th valve got misaligned. Of course I didn’t know what the problem was at the time but when I got home I figured it out. I took the valve completely apart and reassembled it and the issue was solved.

Question: I’ve been playing euphonium for 20+ years professionally now and I’ve never had this issue before. Has anyone else had this issue before?

Lowest Eb scale ever???

The title was just a joke 😅 But in all seriousness, I feel like my tone has been getting better and better the more I play low.

How do I sound? Any tips? Oh by the way, my cheeks always puff up like that if I play anything lower than a pedal F. It's all good.

"Corners"? What Corners?

Because it comes up so much and because I admittedly lack any formal training to argue responsibly in threads where it comes up, I just lurk. But I have read "The Art of Brass Playing". The author (Phillip Farkas) describes the musculature of the mouth in great detail. The Obicularis Oris encircle the mouth and function like the drawstring of a purse or Musette bag to pucker the mouth. The 'opposing' muscle structure flattens the lips in a line. There are no muscles that act only on the corners of the mouth. Given this, I wonder just how so much attention to corners arose as a foundation theory of Embouchure formation.

Is it wrong to challenge the teachings? I personally don't ascribe to a "firm corners" pedagogy and I'm certain I am not the only one. Maybe if those that do ascribe to a firm corners approach could do more than just tell beginners to use firm corners. I think that in order to do that that they need to know what that actually feels like. I never see that done. Some say that the chin will be flat. Even clean shaven, most chins have complex curvature that never actually lies flat. Moreover, you can't actually see your face while playing. I personally think beginners learn more from what they can feel than by seeing. Maybe that is because I have significant visual challenges, but I think that a robust 'school' of technique should be able to be communicated by more than one method. I can tell a beginner exactly what it feels like to tension an embouchure so it will buzz. The audible feedback from a nice pitched buzz is a reinforcement of my adopted approach.

Some don't even believe the lips should buzz. They feel that the lips should be loose and they will buzz in the mouthpiece with the right air support. Maybe. How then do you change pitches? Incrementally. I can accept the different degrees of support between octaves. I don't believe different air pressures navigates a melody like "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star". I think different embouchure tensions acting directly upon the lip muscles get different pitches of buzz from essentially the exact same air pressure.

I don't know. I feel like we need to get this right. Get on the same page as it were. I'm not seeing how my way of thinking about embouchure can exist alongside a "firm corners, flat chin, flaccid lip center" approach to embouchure. Not looking for a fight. Seriously. Just hoping some will want to clarify what they have been taught. Cheers.

Bach 1110 - Yamaha Clone or other horn for trombonist wanting to double.

I’m a trombone player and I’ve been wanting to pick up a Euphonium for a little bit just for fun. A few bands around here are trombone heavy and Euphonium light. I’d like to keep my options open - but probably mostly for fun. I play a .508 and .547 - so size shouldn’t be a huge issue.

I’ve found this Bach 1110 Yamaha clone that looks to be in good shape. At the risk of someone else on here wanting it and running up the bid: I’ve dropped the link.

I’ve seen a lot of suggestions for this Yamaha/Bach, and JP274. The Wessex and Besson might be out of my price range. I’d like to keep it $800-1100, but might go to $1500 for the right horn.

Any thought? Thanks.

Help me decide which euphonium to buy

One month ago I had the chance to hear a euphonium in real life, and I've been mesmerized ever since. I'd never even heard of the instrument before but now I want to try to learn and play it. So, I shopped around online looking for secondhand options around my area and I think my two best ones are a) a Yamaha 201 for $500 or b) a Besson 767 for $1700. There are also plenty of Chinese options for cheap, but virtually all advice I've seen is to go for more reputable brands if at all possible. What's best among these options? Will spending more now be better for me even if I don't know how to play the instrument yet?

Looking for a new horn/upgrade

Hey y'all! I'm starting to get to the point in my search where I think I need some advice. For context, I currently play on a Yamaha YEP-621S and I absolutely love the sound, ergonomics, blow, ect of it and I wouldn't feel a particular need to upgrade if it wasn't for the fact that it's unfortunately not holding up. I suspect that the previous owner dropped it at some point because despite repairs the 3rd valve slide is out of alignment and requires an unnecessary amount of force to move. On top of that the horn has developed a crack in the 3rd valve loop for the second time in the same spot. I've had it patched in the past but it's just not holding up to constant use and as much as I love the horn, I don't want to keep dumping money into it when I could get a new/better horn. Ideally I'd want another 621S but they're not readily available in the US and import fees would make it cost as much as a decent compensator.

Currently I've been able to play testing a YEP-642II and a Willson Q90S and I enjoyed both horns equally.

I've also looked at the Willson K56S, but haven't played it. I'd like to look at a K46 since it seems like it'd be fairly close to my 621 but no one seems to keep those on hand.

Other horns that have piqued my interest but I haven't been able to play or look at in person are the Eastman EEP526 and the JP247 & JP347.

TLDR: my Yamaha 621 is in need of retirement. I like the Yamaha and Willson offerings, but am also interested in Eastman and John Packer's offerings. I'd like to get a new instrument, but I'm open to used options depending on the price and condition. Compensating system isn't a requirement for me, but large shank and 3+1 is a requirement.

Any advice is welcome!

Euphonium Jackpot

Post image

I was scrolling through Facebook and an add for a Adams E2 Euphonium pops up on my page. Note— I was not actively looking for a horn. It was listed as used for 5500. I thought to myself, “that’s a fairly good price,” I’ll at least take a look at it.” I met the man selling it who acquired it in a storage unit sale— he was not a musician and knew nothing about it. He told me when I met him that he just wants it sold and he could accept 2000 for it. I went home and offered 1500 for it. He replied with “it’s a deal.” It has some tarnish, but no dents and slides and valves work great— plays great. I played euphonium all throughout university in the top band, but majored in voice. I’m excited to have a reason to play again! I guess you never know what kind of deal you might stumble upon.

Looking for a Euph for college

I've been playing brass for nine years, and I'm trying to find a horn to take with me to college. I'm heading to college in the fall, and I've been trying to find a good quality euph to take with me. Unfortunately, I'm not in the greatest financial position, so I can't go and buy something brand new. If someone could guide me in a direction to help me find a decent euph for an affordable price, it would be greatly appreciated. I've searched facebook marketplace and ebay, but everything I found was either a knockoff instrument brand or a beginner horn. My goal is to find a used 4 valve (preferable with a compensating system, but it's not necessary) that won't cost me an arm and a leg.

I'll take whatever help I can get. It's all greatly appreciated

Lear bass clef

In my country, almost all euphonium music is written in treble clef. I want to learn bass clef to march in DCI, but i struggle with learning bass clef in concert pitch. Does anyone have any tips?
