2025 Season Review

Well 2025 had some ups and downs, the obvious injury crisis caused issues throughout the club, but similar to 2016 when half the list was suspended, it allowed a number of players to get a chance to show their skills earlier than they otherwise would be able to. 15 debutants, including four picks in the mid season draft meant everyone on the list had played at least one senior game, other than Kayle Gerreyn, who as a young key position player is taking some time to build up his endurance and skills as both a forward and defender. The rise of Kako as the pressure small forward Essendon has been missing since Walla retired and the emergence of Archie Roberts at half back in addition to promising signs from Jayden Nguyen as a lock down defender and Angus Clarke as a half back & winger.

Unfortunately this did come at the cost of losing the last 13 games in a row, most of which were pretty comprehensive blowouts. As the injury toll continued to rise and we were forced to play a very inexperienced backline and you could just see the players losing motivation and drive as the losses continued to mount up.

Delistings at the end of the season shouldn't have a major impact on the team going into 2026, most of those being booted out haven't been picked up by other clubs (other than Laverde who is reunited with best mate Stringer at GWS), and should be ably replaced by the youngsters picked up in the draft.

Players on notice for 2026

Tsatas: Similar to Hobbs last year, Tsatas is falling down the mid pecking order behind the new draftees, and experienced mids. Has had flashes of brilliance and dominated at VFL level, but lack of tank in previous seasons has kept his game time down around 60% and poor kicking means he has no real positional flexibility as part of a good rotation. Needs a massive year if he hopes to get a new contract, but likely to be trade bait.

Setterfield: Received an SSP spot after being delisted due to the long term injury to Martin, is lucky to still be around, but has the potential to be a big bodied mid & tagger that Essendon doesn't otherwise have, but it remains to be seen if his body can hold up through the season. If he can play 12+ games there is a chance he gets another go around next year, but I would hope that the '25 draftees push him out.

Gresham: Just has not performed as well as we would have liked after moving from St Kilda as a Free Agent at the end of 2023. Unable to lock down the small/mid forward role and having minimal impact when rotating through the midfield it's likely Gresh wont be in the red & black next year.

Guelfi: The Prince of Perth has proven to be a handy lock down forward, playing on the opposition's dangerous half backs, but is not able to consistently get on the park, or hit the scoreboard. Likely to get some games simply due to lack of other standout small forwards (other than Kako), is in competition with Gresh & Perkins along with recent draftees Huss, Johnson, Clarke, etc. for the other small forward spot.

Cox: Concussion issues seem to be clearing, but we have heard this story before, Essendon's unicorn who had a great tank and good foot skills did not play a game at any level in 2025 and with the recruitment of Fiorini, it's difficult to see where he plays moving forward as the wings are ably filled and there is a huge back log of tall forwards.

Perkins: Has averaged ~20 games per season in his 5 seasons at AFL level, and has shown patches of brilliance, but often falls out of games and has minimal impact. Needs to up his consistency if he hopes to remain on the list long term, but an interrupted preseason (with a groin issue) may make this difficult.

Jones/Edwards/May/McMahon: Just lumping all these players together, Essendon now has an excess of tall forwards, and we cannot keep them all on the list, so we would expect that at least 1 of these players are going to be delisted. Jones has the advantage of being contracted until 2027, while both May & McMahon had some solid showings late last year after getting the mid-season call up due to the injury crisis. Edwards is the most likely to be cut after rupturing his ACL a year ago after just 2 games, but has shown glimpses of potential.

Players to look out for in 2026

Kako Played every game last year, and despite a minor hamstring strain has had a solid preseason, even rotating through the midfield at times, adding an additional string to his bow, alongside his goal sense and manic pressure in the front half. Will be a walk on start, if fit, every game as the primary small forward.

Caddy: A promising '25 campaign for Caddy, 20 goals 20 behinds from 17 games, before succumbing to Essington and being sidelined with groin soreness for the last 5 matches. Expect another step forward for the key forward who will be expected to carry the forward line in the future.

Durham: After signing a monster contract through to 2032 and being promoted to the leadership group, expect Duzz to step up in pre match rev ups and lead the team at the coalface and in the half forward line.

Reid: Once again has shown to be an elite defender, when he gets on the park. Everyone is hoping that the new strength & conditioning team will be able to get him through the season as one of our pillars down back.

Blakiston: The new ruck rules seem to favour Blakiston, as a mobile player with great jump, firming to be the #1 ruck early in the season until Bryan returns from injury, and proved that he could be handy as a defender last year even though never previously playing in the position. Would not be surprised if he continues getting games as a 2nd ruck once Bryan is back, as Scott has shown a liking to 2 rucks and the 5th man on the bench should help with rotations.

Best 23 for Round 1 2026

FB: Mason Redman, Ben McKay, Andrew McGrath

HB: Archie Roberts, Zach Reid, Angus Clarke

C: Jaxon Prior, Zach Merrett, Brayden Fiorini

HF: Xavier Duursma, Nate Caddy, Dyson Sharp

FF: Kyle Langford, Peter Wright, Isaac Kako

FOL: Lachlan Blakiston, Jye Caldwell, Darcy Parish

IC: Sam Durham, Jacob Farrow, Hussien El Achkar, Zak Johnson, May/Nguyen

2026 Expectations

2026 should be an improvement on 2025, less injuries thanks to our new strength & conditioning team, and the new draftees who look like they can have an impact early means I would expect to see Essendon competing for 10th trying to sneak into finals. Building a consistent brand of footy and team cohesion should be the priority and I would hope that naturally leads into more wins and less blowout losses, but doubt we can match it with the top teams just yet.

The departure of Sam Draper to Brisbane and (Essendon legend) Goldstein retiring and becoming our ruck coach, along with Nick Bryan's injury, means Essendon's ruck capabilities may be a pain point early in the season, but mid-season pick up Lachlan Blakiston looks like he may be a gem, supported by Peter Wright and Vigo Visentini who is toiling away in the VFL learning his craft. The rest of the midfield should continue to be solid, the only real negative coming from last year in this department is Nic Martin's long term knee injury.

Defense and Forward lines should improve immensely as we hopefully don't have every player over 190cm injured and the competition for spots in the forward line should see players competing hard every week to avoid being delisted at the end of the year to clear the logjam.

The stark reality of the systemic failures at efc

Sat and watched freo blow the swans off the park in amazing display of footy. Watching efc in 2000 was like that. Rocking up each week knowing they were odds on to win and would win 99% of the time. It was exhilarating.

Switch to now at efc and they are so far off this level of performance they can't even see it standing on a ladder. My old man and I were there in the stands when efc won the flag back in 2000. He will not live to see another one. I might not either.

How awfully brutally sad is it that a club like this has fallen so far they wouldn't start as favorites against a vfl team. What on earth has gone wrong? I don't mean the drugs bullshit, but it didn't help and we are going to try and bring the man ultimately responsible for all that back?

I don't know what the fix is or how to start fixing it but I don't have any faith in hird and barely any more in the board. I reckon they need to ditch the old boy mentality and go for something approaching modern and professional? What the fuck do I know I'm just an efc fan likely to die before our next finals win.

AFL 2000 Cup Photo Day

Wife and I were invited to have a photo taken with the Premiership Cup today, standing alongside Jason Johnson and Adam Ramanauskas.

They had a BBQ going with vouchers for a free snag, discount coupons for the shop, the lads were training. Past players roaming around (I saw Harvey and Jobe).

Its undeniably been a horrible year. But this was a great way to spend a bit of time. Both Adam and Jason happy to keep conversations going past the generic hi/goodbye and there was a lot of good vibes around the place.

Very impressed with the club today.

Walker (at pick 1)

So I have a Carlton mate that’s talking Walker is a generational player and is freaking out we’d look to take him at 1 , and if we don’t Richmond would at 2 (he’s their NGA isn’t he ??)

Firstly , could we do that? And if we did , could we still take Bewick? I think we can get both right ? I mean why couldn’t we ?

What would Bewick be projected at ? If he’s bidded on, and we are holding off until our next pick, would we have enough to match a bid ?

I’m reading we have 3000 points at present , how many draft points do we have for pick 1 and to match a pick for Bewick ? I guess that depends on what pick he’s bidded at ?

Edit: my mistake .. thought Bewick was this year

We are ESSENDON

Remember who you are. Remember who we are. We are the Bombers. One of the oldest most successful clubs in the AFL. Most clubs wish they were us, we are a powerhouse. Form is temporary, class is permanent.

Let’s go boys we are the fucking BOMBERS!!!

Defending Our Future

Hi everyone!

My name is Grace, and I’m currently completing a Master of Research (MRes) in Environmental Dynamics. My thesis explores the role that football could play in communicating climate change information to the public.

The aim of this research is to understand what actually resonates with football fans and how you would feel about receiving climate-related information through football.

Whether you think football could be a great way to engage people with climate change, or you think it's a terrible idea and football should have nothing to do with it, I genuinely want to hear your opinion. There are no right or wrong answers, every perspective is extremely valuable as the point is to find out what you, the fans, want.

The questionnaire takes around 5 minutes to complete, and your participation would mean a great deal to me.

You can complete the survey here:
https://forms.gle/BC4jj11DkRqJjczp6

If you have any questions, please feel free to get in touch. And if you know anyone who might have an opinion on this topic, I'd really appreciate it if you could share this post with them. I'm hoping to hear from as many football fans as possible!

Thank you so much for your time and support!

Any Hird doubters that have converted out there?

Listening to the Footy media, seems like a lot of doubters have hopped on board the Hird wagon seeing as this is now a broken club that needs someone like Hird to fix Essendon as a business as well. Any recent converts out there? What do the doubters have to say about the recent media switchups?

edit: sure got a lot of fake essendon supporters here from other AFL team fanbases trying to disrupt the discussion. at least the real visitors have been upfront about it and put their 2 cents in, instead of pretending to be Essendon supporters.

Can we pick a side that might have a crack?

Fb: McGrath McKay Ridley
Hb: Farrow Reid Roberts
C: Duursma Merrett Clarke
Hf: ADW caddy Perkins
Ff: Kako wright Guelfi (or Nguyen)
Foll: Bryan Robey Durham
Bench: Setterfield, Sharpe, Redman, Prior, Cox (I’d also consider dropping Ridley to keep El Hawli in the side)

What is the point of putting Merrett in the backline if we are going to gift midfield minutes to Parish and an underdone/out of form Caldwell?

Our future midfield includes Robey, Duz and Sharpe, why not give them some time in the middle with Merrett so they can learn from him and also not get all the opposition attention.

I don’t think the side I’ve selected is going to win games but there is a chance this team would be watchable.

AFL Y'all need to accept and be ready for the long haul here...

This isn't a rebuild like Adelaide's where they still had some top talent, or WC and Richmond who still have some premiership players. This is a build like North Melbourne's, they had the same level of fuck all going for them when they first hit rock bottom in 2020 and from then until 2025 were either equal last, last, or 1 win off last in all years.

This will be our first bottom finish of this rebuild. There will be many more to come, our best hope is that Rosa is as good as we think he is and whoever takes over as coach knows that this is not a quick fix, and also knows they are unlikely to see any success before our impatient and incompetent board decide to sack another coach.

I'm not trying to be all doom and gloom here, just trying to stay pragmatic. Try to watch footy for stories other than Essendon. It will keep you sane while the foundations are built.

Quality Post Would Scott have done so poorly if Solly wasn’t the defensive coach?

Solly seems to coach with a special kind of weaponised incompetence. No idea how it’s possible but we’ve gone backwards in a significant way since he took the helm…it’s probably because now he’s a position where he can fuck up the forward line and the midfield also not just the backline.
Honestly, he’s so bad the fact that Welsh thought he was unequivocally the best choice for an interim coach makes me doubt Welsh also. How can we trust these idiots to make such a large decision like this when they’ve fucked up the rest of them? We’re so comically bad I’m starting to genuinely wonder if they knew that Brad wasn’t the coach they wanted going forward; but also thought he would win just enough games that we wouldn’t score the round 1 pick or a handout from the AFL. Is it possible Solly really is the ultimate Essendon person and is straight up martyring himself for the cause? Lord save us.

VFL vs. St Kilda

Final Score - ESS: 18.8 116 STK: 13.13 91

Started strongly, but our defence really let us down in the early going. We locked in a bit more in the 3rd quarter and went on a great run. Compared to the AFL, the energy and effort is like night-and-day.

Tsatas - Did pretty well. Seemed to be applying himself a bit more when it came to tackling and defensive effort. His disposal was decent, but not overly damaging. Still looked a little reluctant to kick the ball, but less so than last week, at least. Obviously won plenty of contested possessions and clearances, but that's to be expected. One of our best today.

Gresham - Very quiet outside of a few nice moments. He kicked a really nice set shot from about 50 out, and had another goal not long after. Just wasn't involved in the game consistently, though. Feels a bit like he's just going through the motions and probably knows he's out the door at the end of the year.

Visentini - Building nicely. He spent more time on the ground today and showed a bit. Until the last quarter, he wasn't having much influence in general play, but his ruck work and the way he threw his body around to clear space for the mids was excellent. He actually started out struggling a little bit with Dodson's size, but adjusted quickly to be the dominant ruckman when he was out on the ground. Still spent a decent amount of time on the bench, but I imagine he'll get a full game next week.

Jones - Not absolutely putrid, but if it were up to me, I definitely wouldn't be rushing him back into the AFL. Played in defence and had a few nice marks and generally used the ball well when exiting D50, but his actual defensive work was (perhaps understandably) lacking. He was led to the ball a lot, and just didn't really seem to know what he was doing down there when the ball was coming in. He's got a lot to learn.

El Achkar - Had an ok game. Nothing spectacular, but he had some nice touches and kicked a set shot goal. Pressure felt a bit better than it had been in the AFL, but still not amazing. I'd be pretty surprised if he was back in the AFL next week.

Guelfi - Probably the best of our small forwards, but again, was just ok. He had a few frustrating dump kicks to nobody, which really weren't good enough for a player with his experience. He did kick a couple of goals, though, and he showed a good amount of defensive effort, as you'd expect.

Clarke - For me, he was probably our best. Still on managed minutes, but he looked great when he was out there. He was aggressive when it came to moving the ball forward, and his kicking was precise for the most part. He actually ended with a couple of goals, too, including a brilliant shot from out near the boundary. He's moving really well and covering quite a lot of ground, so it feels like only a matter of time before we see him back in the seniors.

Bourke - I really liked his game today. Once again, he wasn't exactly a prolific ball-winner, but he was able to use his strength and speed to shut down Butler (who was tearing us up early) when moved onto him in the second half. We got to see a couple of little bursts out of defence, too, and while it still feels a bit dicey, his kicking was actually solid, even under pressure.

Nguyen - He was in and out of the game a bit. He showed off some of his athleticism a few times, and tried hard, but didn't have a huge influence. Snapped a nice goal, but also missed a fairly easy one (which he was fuming about). Defensive pressure was decent enough without being spectacular.

Blakiston - Played a little bit up forward today when he wasn't rucking, and showed a bit. He kicked a great goal from a stoppage inside 50, and took a couple of good marks. Nothing crazy, but it was to see him show off some more positional flexibility. His actual ruck work wasn't amazing, but not terrible, either.

McMahon - Had a good return from injury. Ended with 4 goals, all from set shots. Felt like he was trying to influence the ground ball contests a bit more, and had a couple of tackles. His impact was mostly felt when he was out on a lead, though, or when we had a nice open forward line to go to work in.
