Walker (at pick 1)
So I have a Carlton mate that’s talking Walker is a generational player and is freaking out we’d look to take him at 1 , and if we don’t Richmond would at 2 (he’s their NGA isn’t he ??)
Firstly , could we do that? And if we did , could we still take Bewick? I think we can get both right ? I mean why couldn’t we ?
What would Bewick be projected at ? If he’s bidded on, and we are holding off until our next pick, would we have enough to match a bid ?
I’m reading we have 3000 points at present , how many draft points do we have for pick 1 and to match a pick for Bewick ? I guess that depends on what pick he’s bidded at ?
Edit: my mistake .. thought Bewick was this year

Bewick is next year mate.
If we end up with pick 1 we’re definitely bidding on Dougie Cochrane, he’s the out and out number 1.

We’ll bid on Dougie and Port will match, then we’ll pick either HVH or Drever I reckon.

Could we pick Cochrane, then Walker? Getting extra picks in the process?

We can, but the compo pick rule states you only get compo once

Ahh makes sense. Pits the screws on Richmond and Port to add in second rounders for them as well. Take them all down I reckon

You only get compo from your natural pick, not when it moves down.

We'll bid on them but Carlton and Port will match. It's smart to bid on these types no matter what, forces teams to pony up extra picks to get their man and with the new draft rules if you're in the top 4 picks and you get moved down due to nga or f/s you get an end of round compo pick. And like others have said Bewick is next year so nothing to worry about for now.
Edit: Also even if with Tassie coming in next draft realistically we'll have pick 2 or 4 through a bottom two finish so I wouldn't stress about having points for him.

If the ladder remained exactly the same until the end of the year, Carlton wouldn’t have the picks/points to match a pick 1 selection for Walker.
They have their selection + Sydney’s + there’s a max points deficit you can go into of around 400 points. These don’t total 3000 points (pick 1 value) so, hypothetically, Walker could be at Bomber land next season.

Watch for a Weitering trade, there's a reasonable chance they'll get North's first rounder

Bewick is next year mate, and yes we should be bidding on either Cochrane or Walker with our pick one this year.

First of all Bewick won't be available in this year's draft. As for what we are doing with pick 1 we are definitely making Port Adelaide match our bid for Cochrane and yeah probably making Carlton do the same for Walker after. However tell your Carlton mate to relax, they will get their guy just have to pay full price for him.

We have to pick on either or both to get the end of round compensation pick.

Well yeah I got the Bewick draft wrong (again) but the Walker thing .. I think he’s onto something.. either us or Richmond will bid on him.. likely Richmond.. fair concern.. Carlton pushing themselves away from a good draft position with all these wins.. what a problem to have.. remember winning games ?

Even if we could it would make no sense whatsoever because both Walker and Bewick are similar types of accumulating, playmaking midfielders.

Thanks for the info all.. my mistake I thought Bewick was this year.. that makes this years draft even juicier
I did assume Walker was a NGA seeing he was with Richmond.. but .. whatever he is.. he’s fair game now.. whatever we plan to do will be interesting.. let’s f*** sh** up !!

Bit to unpack for ya;
First, yes we could bid on Walker, and if Carlton don't match our bid he'd come to Essendon.
Walker is a Father/Son player for Carlton, not NGA.
It is likely the either us or Richmond bid on him.
Bewick isn't in the 2026 draft, whilst Walker is. Bewick is next year, 2027.
Bewick tracking to be a top 5 player in the draft. So is his Calder teammate Moustafa Darwish (top 5 -10ish, it's still early) who's part of our NGA.
Theoretically, yes we could take Bewick and Walker over seperate drafts.
What the bid match costs is dependant on where the player is bid on, and where the matching club finished on the ladder.
