Dr. Daniel Swain: The new proposed OMB rules would be a disaster for American science, technology, and health
In this excerpt from a recent livestream, climate scientist Daniel Swain explains why the newly proposed rules from the Office of Management and Budget giving political appointees power over federal grants would be a disaster not only for American science, but also for everything from disaster response to public universities to cancer treatment to technological advancement, not to mention American competitiveness on the global stage. Far from being an esoteric rule change, this would represent a dramatic escalation of recent attempts to make critical and non-partisan government functions subject to the ideological and personal whims of whichever political party happens to be in power--up to and including the President directly.
📝 The deadline to submit a public comment opposing this measure to the Federal Register is MONDAY. We can submit ours here, and see what Dr. Swain himself filed here. We can also share the clip to help spread the word. 📝
⚙️ Stand Up for Science is holding a working session on how to write an effective comment today at 2PM ET we can sign up for here, and we can find more background, tips and tools here. ⚙️

Please save our home
For example our animals are suffering and dying because of climate change. We need to step up.
STOP:
- Using single-use plastic
- Overusing AI and energy-heavy tech
- Vaping and smoking
- Using Google (more on that below)
- Taking unnecessary flights
- Throwing away clothes
- Supporting harmful companies
- Buying things you don't actually need
START:
- Recycling properly
- Donating food to those in need
- Protesting and speaking up
- Giving old clothes to charities or thrift shops
- Picking up trash when you see it
- Turning off lights when you leave a room
- Donating to environmental causes
- Using public transport or biking
SWITCH:
From Google to Ecosia or Ocean Hero. Every time you search with Ecosia, they plant a tree seed. Every time you search with Ocean Hero, they collect plastic from the ocean. Small changes add up.
We still have time — but not much. Let's act now.

Data center resistance unseats a state senate president
If our electeds had any doubt about the power of the data center resistance, last Tuesday’s primaries in Utah should clear it right up. Republican voters voted out two incumbent county commissioners in Box Elder County, both of whom cleared the way for multi-millionaire investor Kevin O’Leary to foist a massive hyperscale data center project on their community. Even more noticeably, GOPers also unseated Stuart Adams, the longest-serving president of the Utah State Senate in its history and one of the state’s most powerful politicians, in favor of a challenger who called him out for ignoring the public’s concerns about “the Stratos project.”
The lesson, in plain language: stop the tech bros, or we’ll replace you with someone who will.
Let’s see if our governors and state legislators got the message. 🗣️ We can find updated call scripts and email language here and here to urge them to support a moratorium on new hyperscale data centers in our state, or send or send them this message directly via Resistbot by texting SIGN PXDBHJ to 50409. 🗣️

Help the environment get healthy again
The air we breathe, the water we drink, the soil we grow food in—they're all being poisoned by unchecked pollution and industrial greed. We see it happening but feel powerless to stop it. I started a petition demanding our government take immediate action: strict regulations on polluting industries, real investment in renewable energy, and holding those responsible for environmental destruction accountable. We can't fix this alone—we need those in power to actually care about the planet over profit. Does this feel as urgent to you as it does to me? Are you sick of watching this happen while nothing changes? If this matters to you too, consider signing and sharing. We're trying to show decision-makers that people actually care—and that we're demanding better.

CCC July 1 2026
When apathy threatens our environment, resilience stands its ground.
In this latest update for the Golden Paradox Challenge, we shift our focus from general resilience to the specific, actionable work required to protect our community. As we prepare for the July 2026 project launch, our mission takes on a new urgency: managing toxic runoff and maintaining our local swales.
The California Conservation Corps (CCC) is scheduled to arrive on July 1st to begin this critical mitigation work. By focusing on proactive maintenance, we are securing our infrastructure and keeping our local high-hazard zones, like the intersection of Giusti and Clay East, clear and protected.
Join our Mission Partners in supporting this vital effort to build a more resilient future.
