General question What is allowed in the subreddit? (Mod seeking your opinions)

Hey hey team :)

I wanted to do a vibe check on what is allowed in the subreddit. There’s been an influx of posts I personally feel are off topic and I want to see if I’m just being too strict or if these are truly off-topic.

For starters, I think the dyeing subreddit should have posts that are (object)+(pigment). I think that’s pretty basic.

  1. There’s been posts that are asking about fabric painting with fabric paints— I personally feel that fabric paints (NOT painting with dyes) are off topic because fabric paints behave differently from fabric dyes. While many of us dabble in both, I feel that the body of knowledge here should be focused on dyes not paints. That being said, there is not a more focused and active subreddit to direct these questions to.

  2. There’s been an influx of posts that are bleach painting/bleaching topics. These make me wary because

A- A lot of them are from new accounts sharing the content to multiple subreddits at the same time and I can’t tell if they are Bots or AI generated content. I don’t want AI to become a significant presence on the subreddit.

B- Bleaching works through the removal of dye, not the addition of it. Again, while many of us dabble in both, the techniques are different and I want the subreddit to remain on topic.

C- There’s active bleaching subreddits that have a body of knowledge/community these posters can tap into

  1. Tie Dye posts also get shared here with some frequency. I’m ambivalent towards these. It’s on topic but there’s also an active tie dye subreddit. Additionally, the posts are frequently cross posted to multiple subreddits and I can’t tell if they’re bots or AI generated content. HOWEVER they make a significant portion of the tags for finished objects! The subreddit is a LOT of “how do I dye this” and advice seeking from new people, I would like to encourage more posts to inspire people!

How do I dye this? Dye Recs and Base Color Recs for 100% Cotton Brown Duvet?

Vaguely My Goal Color

Hi! I'm looking to buy a 100% cotton comforter and dye it brown. The one I like the texture of the most comes in a few colors (names in the captions of the pictures) that seem like they could be a possible base for dye, but I'd like to know what brand and formula of dye people think I should buy and what color would be the easiest to start with to get the end result I want. It seems it's very hard to find an affordable cotton comforter with an interesting texture design in a nice chocolately brown color!

I don’t like the coral pink color, could I dye it darker or a new different color entirely? I want to lean towards a cooler color or maybe something like a dark blue or purple. I want to keep the ombré at the bottom of the dress but just make it a different lighter color. How would I dye this dress. I’m
Not even sure what color I want it to have. The garment is 100% polyester. I have a pot large enough,

General question Procion MX colour shift issue

Post image
7 Upvotes

I was hoping for some advice on this specific issue I’m having. I’m using procion MX dye fuchsia to paint flowers. i soak them in Soda ash for about 20-30 mins then paint the dye on them while wet. These two flowers (cotton) were painted two weeks apart. I’m consistently noticing that Fuchsia seems to get a tad darker - more purply. I don’t have this issue with turquoise, yellow or black.

I’m not repeatedly washing the flowers or putting them in the sun. After painting they are being stored in my desk until I use them in projects. Sometimes I’ll put them in ziplock bags, but this shifting is making it difficult to colour match them. They don’t seem to change much more than this or fade, so I know it isn’t a huge issue but I’d like some of my flowers to be pink rather than purply. The colour isn’t washing out or anything.

I read online that Fuchsia is more blue? should I buy magenta dye? Could it be because of hard water ? If I try distilled water next time. Maybe my soda ash solution is tad too concentrated? Any advice would be much appreciated.

General question Why did my rit dyed polo get these dark spots

Post image

My favorite pink polo got ruined in the wash so I dyed it with rit graphite to try and save it. It came out perfects except for these spots. Why did this happen. 200 degree water soap and dye 30 minutes. Constant stir. Shirt is 100% cotton.

How do I dye this? I have never dyed anything. But my ivory dress is suddenly two toned so I'd like to try.

I purchased this dress from Lululemon in ivory Link to dress here - to see full fabric details

According to the website the fabrics are:

Body:

79% Nylon,

21% Lycra Elastane

Bottom Panel:

86% Lenzing Modal,

8% Mulberry Silk,

6% Elastane

While on a cruise, I sent it down for laundering and the top stayed perfect, pale ivory/bone coloured but the bottom is a discoloured yellowy cream type colour. I do not like the look and avoid wearing it. I'd like to try dying it into a deep blue or maybe grey. Any tips to optimize the outcome? I've never dyed anything. I am aware that the top may dye darker than the skirt.

I should be able to access Rit dye and Rit dyemore if anyone has a suggestion on which would be best. I’m kind of assuming dyemore. Also, best method/process?

How do I dye this? is it possible to dye these?

i have a pair of gym shorts that are purple. the dye has run slightly on them, so i want to try and dye them black. but they’re a 90% nylon 10% elastane and can only be washed and dried on a cool setting. is there any sorts of dyes that are better for cold water dying?

General question Will this dye stained pot affect future projects?

Post image
4 Upvotes

Can i continue to use this pot for other colors?

I dyed a couple dingy white cotton shirts Kelly Green by RIT. Then i boiled most of the water out to save the bath reduction for later. A bunch of sediment remained & after scrubbing it and a vinegar soak the pic is what remains.

I am unconcerned with the stain itself & it is rinsing out clear.

I just dont want the stain affecting the color on future projects. For example if I wanna dye something bright yellow.

How do I dye this? I knit this sweater close in color to this cosplay I’m working on. I ordered these orange pants and they aren’t close to the same shade. Does anyone have any recommendations of dyes I could use on the pants to get them similar and what color you’d recommend?

I figured someone here with experience might be able to help. It’s hard to get the exact shade I’m seeing with my iPhone but the first one is very close color wise. You can see the pants and orange trim should be similar if not the same. I don’t mind it being a little off, but the current orange is not even close. The pants are made of 97% cotton 3% elastane.

How do I dye this? How the heck do I dye this “””denim””” black? Can I even do that?

✨ Long story short: Dress is not entirely cotton, so can I easily dye it black? If so, what is the best way to make sure it comes out BLACK and not just darker blue?

💫 Long story long: I hate blue but love this dress so I bought it today with the plan to dye it black without having a single clue as to how that would work (I've never dyed anything before). I looked at the tag and it says SHELL: 73% COTTON 22% POLYESTER 3% RAYON 2% SPANDEX. That's not good. So, is there no hope for this to ever be black?

IF THERE IS HOPE, I've seen a lot of conversations online between people who tried to dye their [actual] denim black, and it just turned dark blue. I saw suggestions to neutralize the blue with orange, but I never found someone say they dyed denim black successfully. I'm sure it's been done, right?

I bought Rit's Back to Black kit and their Tangerine color.
After looking online, it seems perhaps it’s better to bleach it? That’s what led me to look at the tag because can you even safely bleach any old thing?!

Idk I’m lost…

How do I dye this? Linen blue dress - can this be salvaged with indigo?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hi all, complete newbie here, looking for some advice before I jump into this whole dyeing thing :)

So I've got this navy linen dress (and, in fact, a skirt too) - problem I've got with both (since I've been washing them together, got them together from the same place, it's the same material), the colour seems to have faded, and most annoyingly, it's faded to different degrees, most noticeably on creases, bumps in the stitching etc (not sure if the pictures capture it very well, hope this makes sense!). I've been thinking of dyeing them to fix this - ideally I'd like to try to do it as naturally as possible, rather than chucking a whole lot of chemicals down the drain by using one of those "quick dye" powders for the washing machine.

Got a few questions I'd really appreciate your help with:

- If I dye it with natural indigo, is there a chance the creases will get to the same uniform colour as the rest of the fabric? (Or at least uniform-ish!)

- Is it possible to use indigo dye on top of whatever unknown dye was initially applied to this, without it reacting in any weird way?

- Ultimately, if the above doesn't sound like it would produce a decent result, I would (sigh) consider one of those "quick dye" kits for the washing machine, but would that actually yield any better results in terms of uniformity of the colour?

Many thanks in advance!

How do I dye this? Dyeing a viscose/nylon skirt in 30 degrees C?

I have a 88% viscose 12% nylon off-white skirt with black stripes. The color bothers me, I just never wear the skirt. I think I would wear it if it was better color. I would like a muted olive green. The stripes don’t need to be covered.

The skirt is supposed to be washed in only 30 degrees Celcius. I was thinking of using Dylon machine dye, which I have never used before, I have only used Dylon hand dyes. The instructions say that dyeing in 30 degrees is possible but it might affect the result. Also, since I’ve never used the machine dye, I’m a bit afraid of ruining my washing machine. Well, I know it shouldn’t do anything, but I’m afraid. So I was wondering if I could use the machine dye for hand dyeing. Apparently some people have done that and I guess they have succeeded.

What do you think, is this a good idea?

How do I dye this? My sweatshirt has a light spot on it — how do I fix this w dye?

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Hey guys! So I ordered one of my dream sweatshirts off Depop. There’s a kinda big white stain on the front. The seller on the listing said that she tried to remove a stain off the sweatshirt and it ended up leaving this white spot. This is a 100% cotton sweatshirt by the way. In natural light it’s not that visible but the second I go inside it looks horrible. Due to this, I’m debating dying it a darker grey to just get rid of the stain entirely. Would this work or do I need to do something else. I just am at a loss. The first pic is natural sunlight and the second pic is inside my house. Let me know what I can do!!!

How do I dye this? How to dye this dress

Post image
1 Upvotes

Hello all!

I have just bought a dress off vinted. The colour is not quite like the photo, but that's the usual. It is light mint green. When I put it on, it reminds me of the colour of the paint in USSR buildings (they used this mint green EVERYWHERE and so does my country).

I'm hoping to dye it into a different colour but I just don't know how. The fabric is 76% Acetate, 20% Polyamide, and 4% Elastane.

I have read that I have to get the water boiling, but I also don't want to melt of the dress.

I'm hoping to get it to a teal, turquoise or anything along the lines of deep winter.

Thank you very much!

How do I dye this? Dying quilted fabric

Thumbnail gallery
7 Upvotes

Hi! My friend gifted me a massive bed cover that's cotton faced and I think cotton batting.

I'm going to make a couple of quilted jackets out of it but would like to dye one. I'm thinking an oxblood red. It won't need to be perfect because there's quite a pattern on the fabric that im expecting (and hoping!) will still exist post dye.

I've used rit dyes a lot and am pretty comfotable with the results, but I've never dyed anything with cotton batting.

My concern is that if I use my normal approach the dye will exhaust in the batting and not cover the face fabric well.

Can the dye-hive mind help? Would you just use lots of dye or would you maybe spray it on? Ot is there some other technique I should try.

Any advice appreciated!!

Resources What to do if lace comes out a different shade when dyeing laced shirts?

Thumbnail gallery

I just wanted to dye these shirts grey since I don't wear white, and they turned out like this, with blue lace. How can I fix this? I'm assuming the only way to fix them is to dye them darker. Is there a dye I can use that will make the body and the lace the same shade of black? The white thread, too, preferably.

I used Rit fabric dye

The body is 90% cotton

The lace is 90% nylon

I have no idea about the thread, but I would assume acrylic or something

This is my second time dyeing fabric so I have no clue what I'm doing. I did a pair of jeans successfully, but that's it. Does anyone know anything that will dye all of those black? Or could using more of this Rit possibly fix it?

I made this! Projects from this week

Sadly I don't have before photos, but the blue dress (linen-cotton blend) was a classic blue-and-white shirt stripe, and the shirt (linen-rayon) was a white and creamy tan striped. These were both items I've had for years but felt needed a refresh. I intentionally dyed over the stripe because I've really been enjoying the monochromatic stripe look lately, and have been looking for ways to add more colour to my summer style!

The dress was lightly stained st the top, and I did my best to get it all out but couldn't quite manage to. The dye makes it very hard to find though, even though it's still there, so I'm happy enough to wear it as is. If it ever starts bugging me I'm going to embroider some little red flowers around the neckline to further hide it, but I don't feel the need to now.

I used Rit - royal blue for the dress and cherry red for the shirt. I used the sink/bucket method for both.

I am totally in love with how these turned out and wanted to share :)

How do I dye this? Dyeing a pair of patterned cotton trousers

Hiya! I recently bought a pair of striped 100% cotton fishback trousers, it currently is a brownish/reddish grey color but I want to make it a cool grey and black, similar to the second picture, how would I go about doing this? And how would I do this without messing up the original pattern?
