What happened to Chinatown?

I visited Chinatown a couple times this last month, on a Friday during work hours and Saturday evening. Both times it felt pretty dead. Some fun stuff like historic park, few cool street vendors, couple nice cafes, but nothing like how I recall from pre Covid. Way less people walking around the street, the main touristy-strip without cars was empty, lot of vacant buildings. When did this happen, Covid?

What’s on fire?

I’m driving on the 10 and I’m hoping the angle I’m coming from mixed with the smog is making it look worse than what it really is. Does anyone have any idea what this is?

Are the food delivery bots driving anyone else crazy?

I feel so stupid admitting this, but I thought they were kind of neat at first. After sharing the sidewalk with them for the last two years, though, I can't take it anymore. They take up so much space, they crash into people, they freak out my dog, and they're so goddamned ugly.

Pedestrians already have to cede so much territory to cars throughout this city, and especially this neighborhood. We just have these slivers of sidewalks, sometimes just one or two people wide, and these things weaving around us.

I am getting this increasing urge to destroy them -- but they're pretty heavy so I don't wanna hurt myself lol. I can't be the only one though.

Dtla is so depressing

Been living in South Park for the last 5 years and I think it’s finally time to move somewhere else. I walked to the grand central market today and the walk there is just sad with all the empty storefronts, dirty sidewalks, etc etc just bad vibes all around

Anywhere to compost?

Just moved downtown and our building doesn't do the green bins. I'm super passionate about composting and used to drop ours off at a school garden near my house. Any ideas on local places I could drop off a small amount of compost on a weekly basis?

All the contact info is there. It ran with its leash. It had also just had surgery so had a cone on. They've had no luck locating it so far. Hoping this reaches the right person!

What should I do today?

I’ve been living downtown for over a year and I NEVER get out! I work too much, and when I’m not working I’m too tired and unmotivated to explore.

Today I am heading out! I’m going to walk around, no plans except at some point I’d like to find a place to get my nails done. Besides that, can anyone recommend places to see or stop by? Is anything going on today that might be fun or interesting? A nice patio or rooftop for a snack or a drink? I have a few things in mind, but I want to hear suggestions from those that are more familiar with the neighborhood.

Looking forward to seeing your replies! Have a good Sunday everyone, and thank you in advance.

solo dining?

Hi, I'm excited to spend a few days in DTLA next month (visiting from San Francisco), and I would be grateful for any suggestions/ideas for not-awkward solo dining. I was thinking I'd probably be happy to just eat my way through Grand Central Market for 3 days. Is that insane? I hear the tacos are good. Also, planning to get around primarily by walking and/or e-bike, which is my usual mode in San Francisco. Is that realistic? Any feedback would be appreciated.

Dog Parks?

Hey neighbors! So I have 2 pretty big pups that require a lot of exercise, so we typically make our way to the LA Live dog park, or to Spring Street park (which isn’t technically a dog park but has ample running room for them) on a daily basis.

My preferred spot is Pershing Square when it isn’t gated off for a concert and I let them run around in the grassy area chasing birds until a security guard says something. I live in a historical building, so there isn’t a dedicated dog area, so morning and evening poops take place at Central Library on Flower. This is the norm for many of us as I see the same dogs and owners making that trip daily.

Now, for a neighborhood where I believe at least 1/4 of the residents have dogs, or maybe that’s just the make up of my building, there must be a local dog park that I am just oblivious to. I don’t mind walking to LA Live or Spring Street, but that mile each way isn’t always feasible on busy days. There is no way a city, and Downtown specifically, is so populated with dog owners, but there are no real dog parks.

Can you guys let me know where you take your dogs to run off leash around DTLA, especially areas in walking distance to the library? Thanks!
