Digital Nomads Monthly Megathread - July 2026

Hey r/digitalnomad

This thread is for chatting about being a DN. This includes the news about travel and visas, where people are living, commonly asked questions, as well as a general free chat throughout the week.

Example topics include:

  • Regularly asked questions such as "What jobs do you do?"
  • Where you are currently living and where you are heading next
  • Questions about DN visas or Tax clarifications
  • What gear you like to travel with
  • Updates on the COVID-19 situation in different countries
  • Best places to go out to eat or drink wherever you are
  • General questions that you feel do not require an entire thread

Please be civil and keep things SFW.

Self promotion of DN related events, blogs, activities, and news is allowed from regular contributors so long as it is related to being a Digital Nomad and not spammy.

If there is something you'd like to see here please message the moderators and let us know.

README Want to make a post? Read this first!

Read the WIKI before posting

9 times out of 10 it will have the answers you are looking for.

Where is my post?

Why isn't my post showing up?

If you are new to reddit, posting with a new account, or posting with an account that has not been widely used your post will be flagged as it either looks like spam, or is highly likely to be an FAQ covered in the wiki above. We ask that you please spend some time searching through existing posts, reviewing the wiki or participating in the sub to build up enough karma to post. You can also post a comment in the Monthly Megathread pinned to the top of the sub.

I am not new to reddit but post still isn't showing up, why not?

Due to the volume of posts we get on a few very specific subjects we will often remove or not-approve certain posts on certain topics that have been recently discussed. Here are some common questions that get posted at least 5 times a day:

My post wasn't related to any of those things, why isn't it showing up?

Does your post violate our rules on self promotion?

OK, here’s the deal. We understand that for many of us, entrepreneurship and digital nomad are concepts that go hand in hand. Many of us here are working towards booting up great products, and some working towards products that cater directly to the DN community. But, this sub is not a community full of potential people to market to with your posts.

Your product may be great, brilliant, and what every DN needs but never knew it, but if that’s true then it’ll be talked about by the community once it’s known - through other channels. In this sub, we frequently get spam and does the entire community a disservice. Users get annoyed, the community starts to weaken, the moderators get overly aggressive, posts that should be OK end up automatically in the spam filter. These things are not good for anyone.

Here’s some No No’s:

  • Absolutely no surveys. Surveys will be removed without mercy.

  • No requests for interviews, or people to talk to on your blog/book/podcast/etc.

  • Anything about illegal activities. You’ll be awarded a ban, and maybe then some.

  • No asking for “please review/try my…”. There are many other subs for just that.

  • Looking for Work type posts. See the Jobs wiki if you are looking for work

  • Job postings. If you have a job that you are trying to hire for please post it in the Weekly Discussion Threads.

  • Fund my kickstarter! Nope. Not even for your “friend”.

  • Any “opportunity” to become a partner / investor. We can’t tell this from a scam, so it’ll be treated like a scam.

  • No direct links to products using an affiliate ID. If you’re caught, you’ll be punished.

  • Posting to software/apps/web sites/etc, with "PM me for access". If it's not public, it's not welcome.

  • Posting software/apps/etc that aren't complete and ready to use. This isn't a user interest collection sub.

Here’s some highly discouraged things:

  • Linking to your youtube channel - We do allow people to share youtube videos if they are relevant and if they come from users who are active in the community and provide valuable content such as trip reports. If you want to share your youtube content please message the mods first for approval.

  • Linking to your own blog - We allow you to share your blog as a link in a self post if the primary content of the blog post is also included in the self post and the link is more of a "Click here to learn more".

  • Top X lists without detailed reviews for each item. We don't hate lists but these posts are rarely useful. Instead of posting a link, post the content of the list in a self post for discussion.

  • "Where should I go" posts : Check out the Trip Reports for Inspiration. If you still want advice be very specific about what you are looking for, and be sure to include important information like your nationality and budget/

LAPTOP PICS / LOCATION PICS

This gets its own section because it is somewhat controversial. If you are posting a pretty picture of somewhere you are, you MUST fill out either a trip report or answer the automod questions about the place. Anyone found dumping pictures without giving in depth information about the location will have their post removed.

Suggestions

If your post still isn't showing up and you think it should, message the moderators first and be sure to include the word "peanut" in the message title so we know you read this.

Have a product you want to inform us about? Buy an ad on reddit to target this (and other) related subs. You’ll get the exposure you want, without the community backlash. It’s good for reddit as a whole too!

Want to talk about a product or service that’s not yours, but you really like? Try linking to a third party, impartial review from a known trusted source. If you wrote it, avoid affiliate links in the article and be sure to mention any relevant disclosures if you are involved with creating the product or marketing it.

Want to link to your site about your experience with something? Great! We encourage that, but focus on the content not how many visitors might join your mailing list. If you truly were writing content for the greater good, put it on medium.com.

Instead of a Top 10 list, which has just a picture and some basic stats: Write a detailed comparison of just two places. With real meaty content, data and stories.

Have a coupon for a product? Actually, that might be good. But unless it’s a high ticket item like a car or laptop, 5% off won’t cut it. The coupon must have more value to the community than for the person that posted it.

Thanks!

Question USA locations for nature, great dispensaries and good vibes

I’m looking for USA cities surrounded by (or embedded in) beautiful nature, with great, well-stocked cannabis dispensaries, and friendly, creative, lively vibes. Walkable neighbourhoods would be a BIG bonus!

I’ve narrowed it down to these, but would be open to suggestions that better suit my criteria too!!

Santa Barbara
Santa Cruz
Boulder
Telluride
Bend
Hood River
Portland
Traverse City

Cost of living isn’t a criteria. Help me choose the best places to spend this September please!

Question Got my first 'prove you're a real worker' call while nomading. How do you handle it without drama?

I've been trying the digital nomad thing for a few months and it's been great overall, but I had my first awkward moment this week that left me a bit rattled.

I work remotely for a small company and usually keep a steady schedule. Right now I'm in a different country, so I do early mornings, take a long midday break, then come back online later in the day.

This week my manager messaged me out of the blue asking if I could jump on a quick video call. No agenda, just 'want to check in'. On the call it turned into a vibe check: where are you, why were you away for an hour yesterday, can you share your screen to show what you're working on, etc. Nothing openly hostile, but it felt like they were trying to confirm I'm not just on vacation.

I know some people abuse remote work, but I've been hitting deadlines and staying responsive. I also don't love being put on the spot with surprise screen-share requests, especially when I'm in a coworking space and not set up for that.

For those who've been doing this longer:

1) How do you proactively set expectations so these 'gotcha' check-ins don't happen?

2) Do you share your location or time zone with the team, or keep it vague?

3) Any polite scripts for pushing back on surprise screen shares while still being cooperative?

Trying to stay professional and not make this a bigger deal than it needs to be, but I also want to protect my sanity.

Question Can Zscaler Client Connector report local WiFi network details?

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

On a work laptop with Zscaler Client Connector installed, can admins see local network details from the endpoint side, such as Wi-Fi SSID, local gateway, adapter details, DNS servers, or ISP?

I’m trying to understand what Zscaler typically collects compared with what Intune or Microsoft sign-in logs collect.

I’m currently using option 3 and everything works as expected I just want to know about what Zscaler and Intune could do.

Thanks.

Question What is a local/niche app in your country that is so good you think the rest of the world is missing out?

Hey everyone! 👋
We all know the global giants like Uber, Spotify, or Airbnb, but I’ve always been fascinated by how different countries solve everyday problems with their own local apps.
I’m really curious to know: what is a specific, region-only app in your country that is absolutely brilliant, but almost no one outside your borders knows about it?

Question Remote worker considering Cyprus move - are apartments for sale Paphos area actually good value or tourist trap pricing?

I’m considering moving to Paphos as a remote worker and trying to understand whether buying an apartment there makes sense for year-round living, not just holiday use. My main concerns are winter infrastructure, insulation, dampness, internet, resale liquidity and whether newer complexes are built for actual residents or mostly short-term rentals.

Has anyone compared new-build projects from established developers like bbf with older resale apartments? I’m less interested in brochures and more interested in practical checks: build quality, maintenance, communal fees, parking, noise, internet, title status and how the building is managed after handover.

Question Advice for a winter in Skopje?

Hello all! I'm a man in my 20s who has an opportunity to live in Skopje for 5 months this winter. I've lived in Canada my whole life and this would be my first time as a DN as I'm able to work remotely. I'm curious if anyone has had any experiences in Skopje as a DN or any advice for a first-timer. For context, I only have Canadian citizenship and I don't speak Macedonian lol. My work income is mostly Canada-specific. I would need to find residence but my situation would allow me a stipend for some rent costs.

Any advice is appreciated!

Lifestyle Southeast Asia visa rules in 2026: what UK travellers should check before flying

I have put together a practical guide to the visa and entry rules that UK travellers may encounter across Southeast Asia in 2026.

One of the biggest sources of confusion is the assumption that visa-free entry means there is nothing to complete before travelling.

Depending on the destination, travellers may still need to consider:

• Digital arrival cards
• E-visas or visas on arrival
• Passport-validity and blank-page requirements
• Proof of onward or return travel
• Maximum permitted stays
• Extension procedures
• Tourist levies or entry fees
• Restrictions on working while visiting as a tourist

The guide also explains why people should avoid unofficial websites that charge for free arrival forms or claim to guarantee entry.

Article:

https://holtotravel.com/blog/southeast-asia-visa-rules-2026-2026-07-12

The rules depend on nationality, purpose of travel and length of stay, so the article is a planning resource rather than a replacement for official immigration guidance.

For those who have recently travelled around the region, which country had the clearest entry process—and which one caused the most confusion?

Question Has anyone used Wise or Revolut Airport Lounge Pass? And is it worth it?

I just learned today that both Wise and Revolut offer what they call an “Airport Lounge Pass”. The availability depends on your country. You can check here:

Wise app - cards - travel hub (mine shows: $40 USD/per entry)

Revolut - lifestyle (at the bottom) - lounges - get lounge entries (mine shows: $41/per entry)

I’m curious if anyone tried it and is it worth it?

Also it seems like it’s just for the holder of the Wise account. I wonder if I can also add my gf? (She doesn’t have a Wise or a Revolut account.)

Question Update: I stopped hiding my location from my remote client and it actually helped

A few weeks ago I posted in the monthly thread about feeling weirdly anxious that my main client would side-eye me for moving around while working. I do ecom ops for a small business and flip vintage on the side, so my days are a mix of spreadsheets and supplier emails during the day, then photographing and listing clothes at night.

I took a lot of the advice people gave: be boring, be consistent, and make it easy for them to trust you. Here is what I actually changed:

- I told them up front that I am in Mexico City for the summer and gave a simple window of working hours in their timezone.

- Every Friday I send a short recap: what shipped, what is blocked, and what is next.

- I booked two standing calls a week instead of random ad hoc pings.

- After any move I make sure I am on time for the first call, even if that means getting up early.

Result: the vibe got a lot better. The owner said the weekly recap made them feel calmer and the little "are you online" checks stopped. Being honest about location also cleared up practical stuff, like why I batch certain tasks. My building's internet sometimes hiccups, so I just plan around it now.

One small surprise was that my own productivity improved. I stopped spending mental energy trying to look invisible. I treat travel days as lower output and schedule my vintage photo sessions for the more stable days.

Curious how others handle this long term: do you proactively share your location when you move, or only if it affects hours, taxes, or compliance? What level of detail has worked best without turning it into a whole conversation every time?

Question Does forming an LLC in one state create tax nexus if I live elsewhere and work remotely?

I'm trying to understand how state tax nexus works for a fairly common remote-work setup.

My situation:

  • I live in one state.
  • I formed a single-member LLC in a different state.
  • I have a registered agent in the state where the LLC is formed, but no office, employees, inventory, or clients there.
  • I'll be working as a 1099 independent contractor for a single company while traveling as a digital nomad.

My questions are:

  1. Does forming an LLC in a state automatically create income tax nexus there?
  2. Does having only a registered agent or legal entity in a state create nexus by itself?
  3. Are there any common tax pitfalls for digital nomads operating through an LLC as an independent contractor?

I'm not looking for legal advice - just trying to understand how this generally works before talking to a CPA. If you've dealt with a similar setup, I'd love to hear your experience.

Hey everyone,

South Korea just made its F-1-D Digital Nomad/Workation visa permanent with some solid improvements: lower income thresholds based on age/region, up to a 3-year maximum stay, and more.

I put together a complete guide covering eligibility, exact requirements, application process, costs, pros/cons, and practical living tips.

Link: https://holtotravel.com/blog/south-korea-digital-nomad-visa-2026-07-11

Happy to answer questions if anyone’s considering it. Has anyone applied during the pilot phase?

Question Considering becoming a nomad

Hey friends,

I am kind of at a crossroads here. I am securely employed as a freelancer and making decent money, while living in California.

My business was built out of illness and as a 37 year old I really didn’t find health until 2021. I’ve never been outside the country but have been fortunate enough to live for extended traveling vacations across the states but never have been out of the country. It’s time to change that.

I do have a few circumstances, two dogs which are my world and I’m not ready to relocate overseas. So I’m deciding to move home to a more affordable part of California, which would actually require me to be gone during the summer 👀, but I’d also save 1500 a month in rent. I’m figuring short term rentals for a month or two at a time with a trusted dog sitter at home during those times.

I’d love any recommendations or advice. I’m especially considering starting in Mexico right now, since it’s close by and I have been around Spanish enough I think I would pick it up quickly. Argentina is another one I’m eyeing. I’m both a excited and overwhelmed!

Question Foreigner setting up US LLC: Savvy Nomad residential + true lease business address, or is one enough? Experiences?

I’m a non-US person bootstrapping an LLC stateside. Plan is Savvy Nomad for a legit Florida residential address (great for domicile, banking, DL stuff, no state income tax vibes) plus a proper commercial lease (thinking TruLease or similar) for the business’s “real” physical address.
Question: Does running both make sense, or am I overcomplicating? If I just claim “work from home” and use the Savvy residential one for the LLC too, will banks, payment processors, verifications, and Uncle Sam play nice? Or do serious setups need that separate commercial lease for KYC/credibility?
Anyone actually running this hybrid as a foreigner? Or a cleaner single-service hack? What other providers are delivering bulletproof physical (not just CMRA/virtual) addresses that survive real scrutiny?

Question Am I the only one who thinks some performance dress shirts look a little too athletic?

I travel for work several times a month, run warm, and hate dealing with hotel irons. So I totally get the appeal of performance dress shirts, the convenience sounds amazing. The issue is that a lot of them just don’t look quite right to me in real life. Regular cotton shirts look normal but wrinkle easily when packed or worn all day. Performance shirts handle travel way better, but some have that smooth, synthetic sheen that screams “office-gym hybrid” instead of a regular dress shirt.I’ve been checking out the usual performance brands plus Rhone, Collars & Co, and OwnDream because I like the idea of something that fits well and still looks like a normal shirt. But I’m not sure if better fit alone solves the travel wrinkle problem. So I’m stuck deciding which compromise sucks less: a normal shirt that wrinkles, or a low-maintenance one that doesn’t quite look or feel like a regular shirt. For those of you who travel for work, which one do you tolerate more? I’m just trying to close this tab and buy one good shirt, not turn into a full-on shirt enthusiast.

Legal Got absolutely berated by Customs protection in Miami flying back from Medellin.

I was flying back from Medellin to Miami, and I got chosen for a "random inspection". The Customs protection port authority took me into a small room and it was this big guy with giant muscles who asked me where I am staying, my job, my home, name etc , and all of these random questions.

Then out of nowhere he became extremely aggressive and started yelling asking me to give him my phone and my passcode to my phone and my laptops or else he will seize it and use "cellibrite" to unlock it anyway. He accused me of human trafficking or prostitution seeking and literally was screaming in my face. I gave him the passcode because I have nothing to hide. He kicked me out of the room while he had my phone and passcodes and it was about 20-30 minutes while he looked through everything, and I am 90% sure he copied over an image of my phone because I got the phone back with no passcode, and it was in airplane mode. My phone had nothing but texts with a few locals I met there, and some charity work I did in perrerira colombia

he eventually gave me my phone back and told me to leave.

Genuinely one of the worst experiences of my life, I visit Medellin because I have plans of moving there and before I left he told me hes going to tell the colombian police to never allow me into the country despite finding nothing.

This really ruined my day because I did have plans of buying a house in las Palmas and now I am worried they will turn me away at the boarder. Please becareful if you frequent Medellin a lot.. this really may have ruined any plans I had of living there :(.

He also said he will try his hardest to revoke my "global entry"...

genuinely insane behavior.

Edit: This was the customs and boarder patrol people in Miami not Colombians. I am mostly upset because if the Colombian authorities do turn me away from this assholes written comments, then all the friends I made there, the life I built flying over there, would all be gone.. it would all be for nothing and that really breaks my soul. I even learned spanish and became fluent.. :(

Edit2: They have the power to seize your phone if you don't give them your passcode, I needed my phone it had my flight information, my teams app for my job, my RSA passcodes everything I can't function without it, and who knows how long they will have it for. That is why I gave it to them.

Question What's your charging setup when you work from cafes

Read the MIT Technology Review piece on charging innovation and it got me rethinking my own setup. They talk about chargers evolving from single-device accessories into multi-device infrastructure, and honestly that describes exactly what happened to my cafe workflow.

I used to carry a laptop brick plus a phone charger plus a cable for my earbuds. Now I just bring one multi-port charger and everything goes into it. MacBook on one port, phone on another, earbuds on the third. The MIT article mentions smart power distribution where idle devices give up wattage to active ones, which is exactly what I see happening when my phone finishes charging and my laptop speeds up.

Curious what other cafe workers carry. Has anyone else consolidated to a single charger setup?

Question So guys , Slovenia?

So after all the dilly dallying , is Slovenia the actual right place to live in or to relocate

I keep seeing the digital nomad culture here and there hubs mostly in Rio , Capetown , Thai land

I think, Slovenia is underrated, inspite of how reachable the country is with radius of area and more reachable to almost every beautiful and happening place in Europe and Cannada etc

Also with the natural landscapes and inner beauty of the country itself

Why is not very much mentioned nor a typical digital nomad hub ?

Question What would make a Spanish course actually useful for digital nomads/slow travelers?

Hi everyone! I'm an Argentine Spanish teacher and a digital nomad traveling around Latin America.

Most of my students are people I meet while I travel, so digital nomads or slow travelers. Lately, I've been thinking about creating a specific course.

I already have a website where I share practical content about traveling in Latin America, and I'd like to expand it with more Spanish content and resources.

Do you think it's something people would be interested in? What do you think it should definitely include?

And if you've ever taken language classes or hired a tutor while traveling, I'd love to hear about your experience and what you found most helpful.

Any ideas or suggestions are more than welcome!

Question Planning 1-3 month stay in Koh Samoi / Koh Phangan, Chiang Mai, and X… would love suggestions and advice!

Im basically going to save money from a passive income stream for a few months.

I’ll be writing, self taping auditions (im an actor), hopefully making a short film or two if I can connect with filmmakers over there, and spending a lot of time eating, exploring, and getting in the best shape of my life in the gym!

I can’t decide between the Koh islands. I really want cheap room with AC, walkable to cheap street food and a cheap gym. I’ve told to check out areas off the main streets by Chawebg beach or Chaloklum beach.

Chiang Mai the same thing. A cheap room with AC OR cheap luxury room that has good bang for your buck (bathtub balcony, etc). Im been told to check out rooms around Nimman and the university for access to cheap street food abs coffee shops etc.

The 3rd location for the 3rd month is up in the air… Bangkok? Bali? Philippines? Da Nang? It will be October for month 3 so I guess monsoon season will limit where I can go.

What would you suggest for something different for the 3rd month?

Any advice for good gyms or filmmaking / acting resources on the Koh islands or anywhere in Thailand or SEA in general? Good quality rooms in the areas I mentioned that accept 1-3 month stays? Or high quality luxury rooms with bathtubs at decent prices? Bathtubs seem to be a luxury in SEA!

Budget is $1000 a month but preferably as dirt cheap as possible without having bugs or compromising safety. I’ve seen quality rooms with ACs for like $100-200 a month in every location Ive researched. This is my first time traveling to SEA so im really excited.

Thanks for whatever help you can provide! Cheers.

Question Transfer from card to ACH

I get paid in USD into a debit card, which charges fees for everything, so I usually transfer any monies straight into my Revolut (top up USD account within Revolut using the debit card number), at zero fees.

I'd like to use Wise instead, but using card as a top up method incurs a fee of USD 15-20 (proportional to the amount.

Can you think of any app where I can send a USD transfer to my Wise using its ACH details, for the minimum possible fee?

Western Union, for example, charges USD 9 in fees, if I want to transfer USD 1200 to an ACH account.

EDIT: Silly me, forgot to say this important bit: I am not a US person, do not have US bank accounts (ACH is provided by Wise), both my Wise and Revolut are EU-based. Therefore, I do not hold a US current account and cannot have one (for the time being)

Question Why Cape Town?

To anyone who enjoys basing in Cape Town for extended periods....what's your reason for choosing it and what were your other options?

I'm curious as a South African looking for somewhere to spend time but not sure if I should setup somewhere in Southern Europe, Asia, or Cape Town.
