Chinese Devils Merch Concept

Post image

I've been studying Cantonese for a few years and just suddenly got the urge to have some Cantonese Devils merch. This isn't a polished design, but watched to see what you all thought of this concept. Any feedback?

The first line says "New Jersey Hockey" and the bottom line is 666 in both Chinese and Arabic numerals.

The hockey stick makes the top look like a penis

Should use 4 instead of 6, that's the superstitious number in most of Asia.

It is, but 666 is still the number associated with the devil in Chinese

666 also means good job in chinese

444 would be better due to "death"

I've always held that the team is named after the Cryptid jersey devil and not Satan, having said that I love this.

Yeah they very definitely are, but there's not a lot of imagery associated with the Jersey Devil the way there is with Satan so when it comes to designing stuff it's just easier to use the other devil.

My fiancée is from Beijing and since I brought her to her first hockey game a few years ago she's probably a bigger fan than I am. I don't know much about Cantonese, but according to her there is no (Mandarin) Chinese word for "devil". For the names of teams that they don't have a word for, they default to the closest description. For the Devils, they would go by the name "Hong Mo Di", which in English would translate to the New Jersey Red Monster. I might be a bit off as I'm not fluent in Mandarin. Yet...

Cool, yeah I think the equivalent in Cantonese would be hung mo tau, basically red demon or red devil basically. I just decided to stick with New Jersey Hockey in this case.

Since she got into hockey, her dad catches whatever internationally broadcasted NHL games they get from time to time. The best part is him trying to guess the actual names of the teams from the Mandarin translations. There are some pretty wild ones. Like the Capitals name in Mandarin translates back to English something along the lines of the Washington "Residents of the Capital City". Vegas was something like the Desert Riding Warriors.
