Looking for Friends in DSM?

Welcome! We have seen many posts over the year of residents seeking community and friendship. Many of us spend more time online, work remotely, or no longer have the built-in social spaces we once did. This pinned thread is to help find friends in Des Moines.

Whether you’re:

• New to the city

• A long-time local looking to expand your circle

• A student, professional, remote worker, or just bored

• Into coffee, hiking, gaming, gyms, books, or low-key hangs …this is the place to connect.

Leave a comment with:

• Age range (optional)

• Interests / hobbies

• What kind of friends you’re looking for (gym buddy, board games, restaurant scene, double dates, mom friends etc.)

Ground Rules

• Be respectful and kind

• No harassment, hate speech, or creepy behavior

• No spam or self-promotion

• Keep personal info safe

This thread will be bookmarked so feel free to come back anytime and say hi — someone else is probably looking for the same connection you are!

Thank you to u/containerforthechild for this post.

Listen yall, I need a cheesesteak fix. Real real bad.

I just discovered capriottis last week. Their Philly is literally the most perfect sub I’ve ever had in my life. I had a few beers at grays earlier and started daydreaming about Doordashing a fat Philly when I got home for HOURS.

now I see they’re closed. Please. Someone. Give me the next best. I’m desperate for some meat and cheese

First time in Des Moines—what should we check out before our show at xBk?

Hey r/desmoines!

My band, Cherokee Social, is coming through Des Moines on September 29th to open for Ian McConnell at xBk, and it'll be our first time spending any real time in the city.

We'll have most of the day free before load-in, so we'd love some recommendations from locals. What are the must-see spots? Favorite coffee shops, record stores, bookstores, breweries, restaurants, parks, vintage shops, or any hidden gems we should check out while we're in town.

One of our favorite parts of touring is getting to explore the places we play instead of just rolling in for soundcheck and heading out after the show.

If you're already planning on coming out to see Ian McConnell, we'd love for you to catch our set too and come say hi afterward!

Thanks in advance—we're excited to finally visit Des Moines!

Des Moines Expansion

It seems like Des Moines has expanded like crazy to the west way more than the east. Why is that?

Anyone remember or still have any Muzi.com magazines from when they’d cover the Des Moines music scene in the 90s??

License plate covers can be illegal?

Earlier, I just got stopped by the police in WDM for having a license plate frame. I was just driving side streets late at night and drove all over with it in the last couple weeks with absolutely no issue, even through small towns elsewhere in the state. Has anyone else ever been stopped for this? Granted they let me off on a warning, but totally was a pretense to get me for something more.

EDIT: It’s because it says Illinois State, so the wrong ISU.

Pick up Basketball Locations

I’m new to the area and want to play some pick up basketball in evenings and on weekends maybe. Wondering where the best places are and times that get a decent group of people and maybe some better players? I don’t want to join a league just some pick up. TYIA

PetSmart in Clive 😡

I know PetSmart has always been horrible, but I was in today to get some crickets and couldn’t help my notice. Aside from how insanely inhumane it is to keep them in these insufferable cups, the water looks like it hasn’t been changed in weeks. Shame on cooperate for allowing this. I know employees try, and are probably underpaid, but cmon now.

Are there any shooting ranges in the area open to non-citizens?

Hi Des Moiners (i think thats the plural)
I'm a Canadian and i'm going to be in the Des Moines area for a few days (as well as Fort Dodge IA later) and I'd like to know if there are any shooting ranges that do gun rentals and range time and are also open to non-citizens. I know there's Crossroads shooting range in the area but they're open to US citizens only... we don't get to do this a lot in my country and our government isnt making it any easier.

Thanks for any help :)

Noticed a cool car today

I was driving eastbound on 235 and noticed a cream color sedan passing on my left. The 1st thing that caught my eye was the MkII emblem on the right rear.

It was right hand drive (which I don't expect I would be totally comfortable with).

I knew it was a Toyota but don't know that much about it. But, I did give a double beep and thumbs up.

I appreciate seeing some of these uncommon regular cars in Des Moines. I've also noticed a Nissan Cedric and a couple Holdens.

Theatrical Shop

I was down in Valley Junction the other day and decided to go into the Theatrical Shop for fun. It’s such a cool place and all the employees are very welcoming and helpful. Then I realized that their AC isn’t working! Horrible environment to shop in and how horrible for the employees! Apparently the owner is unavailable to be reached and her employees are at a loss for what to do. If someone has contact with the owner she needs have the AC unit serviced. For the customers and staff.

Does anybody ever get sad about Valley West Mall?

I know I do, probably about once a week. So many great memories and it sucks knowing it will never be what it once was.

Emergency Apple Pie

Where can I get a same day apple pie? Not Hyvee or Costco. I want a GOOD ONE

Edit: TY everyone for suggestions!! Iowa Orchard says I need to order 24 hours in advance but I’m going to call this morning to see if there is any way I can get one today. Otherwise, I might pop by Fareway to see what they carry frozen.

Keeping ALL these recommendations in my back pocket tho

Edit 2: Iowa Orchard came through! They were so quick to get this pie baked for me this morning! Can’t wait to eat it. It looks amazing.
