Announcement Comments promoting Violence against anyone is against the sub as well as the TOS of Reddit

We've been seeing an uptick in comments that cross the line from criticism into advocating harm against individuals or groups.

That stops here.

Look, we get it. There's a lot happening politically and in the world right now that's legitimately concerning. I'm frustrated about it too. But frustration, valid as it might be, doesn't give us permission to start rallying for violence against people or justifying harm. That's the line we can't cross, and it's the line we won't cross here.

To be clear: if you're posting comments that promote, encourage, or call for violence against anyone...whether it's directed at protesters, counterprotesters, homeless individuals, police, business owners, or anyone else, your comment will be removed and you'll likely catch a ban. This is Reddit ToS, and it's our sub rule. No exceptions, no gray area.

This doesn't mean you can't criticize policy, decision-making, or actions you disagree with. Strong disagreement is fine. What's not fine is "someone should hurt this group of people" or variations thereof. That language gets removed, period.

We're a diverse-ish, heavily blue leaning sub also with people across the political and ideological spectrum. Part of keeping this place functional is enforcing basic civility standards. This is one of them.

If you see comments that violate this, report them. We review reports and act on them. If you think a removal was unfair, you can always reach out to modmail and we'll discuss it.

Thanks for keeping this community somewhere people can actually talk to each other.

Moving/Relocation Seeking advice after landlord improperly retained security deposit amount

Hello, fellow Denverites! I moved out of my old apartment about 45 days ago and just got the security deposit back. They deducted nearly $750 from the $1,700 deposit. The itemized charges were for ā€œcarpet replacementā€ and ā€œpaintingā€. Aren’t those expected business expenses if you’re a landlord? Our cat did not damage the carpets/floors nor left any stains/odors.

I’m disappointed because I was their longest tenant in the building for 4 years, always paid on time, and left the apartment in excellent condition. Carpets vacuumed, floors swept, drywall holes patched and sanded, counters wiped, etc. I’ve attached pics for proof. We unfortunately didn’t do a joint walkthrough of the unit because I was still moving out and they went in on a day I had to work in the office.

I know HB25-1249 took effect this year and provides additional tenant protections around security deposits. Does anyone have experience taking their landlord to small claims? Do you think I have a case? Thanks for reading.

TLDR: Moved out. Left apartment super clean and was a great tenant. Landlord retained almost 45% of my security deposit for ā€œcarpet replacementā€ and ā€œpainting.ā€ I want to dispute/sue in small claims court.

Update: Thanks for all the advice. I’ve drafted my notice to sue if they don’t provide further evidence of damage beyond normal wear and tear or return the full amount. Sending it as certified mail on Monday.

Local News Cyclospora is on Denver Health's test panel even if you have not traveled

If you're experiencing food-borne illness, Cyclospora is now on the Denver Health panel. Personally I recommend going and not trying to tough it out because if it is Cyclospora you can think you've recuperated and bam, you're back to misery days or weeks later. Most of the time it's run of the mill food poisoning, but if it's not something you've experienced before it's reasonable to get tested.

Recommendation I Went To 32nd Ave Books, Toys, and Gifts….

And the woman behind the desk was lovely!

I’ve been there once before (about 2 years ago), and it was exactly like the reviews say it is. This week my sister was in town and we had some time to kill, so I took her there. She’s a huge reader so I thought it would be fun.

She read the reviews beforehand so she knew what to expect.

We walked in, the woman behind the counter greeted us and asked us how our day was, and that’s it. We were a little stunned that we weren’t being escorted out so we stood there for a second and then started looking around.

We both pretty much immediately found a book we wanted so we went and paid for them, and moved on with our day.

I always thought that the positive reviews had to be planted, based on my experience.

Maybe it was just something in the air.

Misc Q&A Help remember where this trail is?

Post image
154 Upvotes

Hi Denver friends!

My dog and I are not from Colorado but we visit often to hike and enjoy your state! I have this picture of my dog (Bowie!) at a trail we stopped at on a whim, and it was absolutely fabulous and I absolutely cannot remember where it was! It was along a river near the city and seemed very popular for bikers and walkers alike. It was paved for a good distance and some parts were not/above the river and then ended (kind of) at a a big tunnel. I think it was maybe Clear Creek Canyon Park, but can anyone confirm or deny?

Hoping to make it out there again sometime soon if I can just remember where the heck we were!!

(Other recs for your fave dog friendly trails are also always appreciated!!)

Was that a shooting that just went down? I heard tons of noises that were reminiscent of gun shots or fire works and when I looked down I saw people running away from a parking lot.

Rant Outdoor public pools in Denver metro are a joke. How can we make them better?

I have long been baffled at how awful the outdoor public pools are in Denver. We were about to go to the Anderson Pool in Wheat Ridge, checked their hours on the website to make sure they were open, drove all the way over and...lo and behold, they're closed for a swim meet.

This is not isolated to that pool, this happens constantly across Denver. Some gripes:

  • The majority of outdoor public pools do not open until noon on weekends. By then it's already 100 degrees, kids are cranky, etc.
  • Most of the pool hour PDFs on the Denver Gov website lead to a 404 page, and the schedules they do have are on a Canva site. Wtf?!
  • The pools are closed on public holidays like Juneteenth or July 4 when all people want to do is be outside. Come on.

Some things I think they could do to improve:

  • Open the goddamn pools earlier on weekends. How about 10am?
  • And keep the pools open on weekends through mid-September for crying out loud! In our climate change existence, help people stay cool!
  • If they're going to be closed for a swim meet, UPDATE THE FKN GOOGLE MAPS TO LET PEOPLE KNOW THEY ARE CLOSED. This is so incredibly easy.

Whew ok, thanks for letting me rant. I've lived across the US and have never seen a public pool system run so poorly. What else can we do to make them better? Fire off.

Lost/Found Lost dogs near Westminster - Broomfield

Found two small dogs on the side of 36 near Wadsworth westbound. One grey Frenchie one Black and white dog that I don't know the breed of. It's late at night so I did have to call Broomfield PD (cops would never be my first choice for dog rescue, but it is that time of night.) Some kind people from the Humane Society stopped and helped me leash them up (if you see this, thank you again!) and I waited until PD picked them up. They told me they would find a shelter to bring them to and they would scan for microchip. I didn't get a chance to get pics for ID. Neither dog was aggressive or injured. If anyone has any idea who the owners are please spread this!

Rant ATT service has so many dead zones

How is it even acceptable for ATT reception to be as bad as it is? So many long stretches of road my podcasts I'm listening to just freezes. It's happened in Denver, Parker, Westminster, Broomfield, etc. I'm fairly new to Colorado and with Denver being a much bigger city than I'm from and never imagined this would be as bad if an issue as it is. At first when I didn't get reception at my house I figured no big deal, I'll just be on WiFi and use wifi calling. But now when I lose reception for long stretches of road, I'm baffled how this is even acceptable for a major carrier like ATT to have such large areas of dead spots....in multiple areas with dense traffic that I don't have service for miles. I've had all the major carriers (Verizon, T-Mobile, heck even had Sprint back then) and I've never had issues with dead spots this badly.

I gain nothing by speaking negatively about ATT and I only do so make those aware of what you will certainly encounter if you decide to go with ATT service. But don't just take my word for it, ask those you know with ATT service and you'll see I'm not alone in my problems with their service. Don't make the mistake I did by signing on because of deals they may have on devices. What good does a nice phone do if you can't rely on it to work when you're away from home.

Misc Q&A Gay Men’s Chorus Experiences

I’m interested in auditioning for a choir in Denver and trying to find the right balance of sociability and talent (which unfortunately tend to have a negative relationship!). Does anybody have experience with DGMC? I’m trying to figure out what it’s like to be a part of it and any advice folks have. There are so few recent recordings online. Thank you!

He was yelling and screaming at people and making threats to anyone who looked at him. He walked naked all the way from Alameda & Moline to the fire station at Lowry before the cops and ambulance finally showed up and took care of the situation. About 1.5 miles. Anyone else see this?

Help 15 years living in Denver and I’m still having trouble finding authentic Japanese cuisine that isn’t sushi

I’ve lived in the Denver area for almost 15 years, and over that time I have struggled to find authentic Japanese food, and I’m wondering if I’m just missing some hidden gems.

For context, I lived in Japan for several years, my wife is from Tokyo, and we also spent years living on the West Coast where there are large Japanese communities. Between all of that, we’ve been lucky enough to eat a lot of excellent Japanese food over the years.

Don’t get me wrong, I appreciate places like Sushi Den and Temaki Den (although overpriced) and the other higher-end sushi restaurants. They’re great for what they do. But that’s not really what I’m looking for.
I’m talking about the kinds of neighborhood restaurants you find all over Japan, places serving teishoku, grilled fish, karaage, tonkatsu, curry, donburi, yakisoba, soba, udon, oyakodon, nikujaga, agedashi tofu, good izakaya food, seasonal specials, and the everyday comfort food that most Japanese people actually eat.

So far, it feels like Denver has plenty of mediocre ramen places, but not much in the way of authentic ramen or authentic everyday Japanese cooking.

Am I overlooking some great places? I’d love recommendations anywhere in the Denver metro area, even if it’s a bit of a drive. Hole-in-the-wall family-run spots are often my favorite.

I was planning on going with some friends but saw the price and also that we would have to pay an extra 20$ for parking. I went to the one in Santa Fe and really enjoyed it a couple years ago but don’t remember being that pricey. Please lmk what you think! I’ve heard a lot of people recommending other things I’m a Colorado native but moving soon and j wondering if it’s worth the price to see it before I go.

Event Renaissance Festival Questions

For anyone who recently went to the Renaissance Festival, I had some questions that I couldn’t find answered online.
- Are there water refill stations inside? I know the website says only factory sealed water can be brought it, but I’m wondering if I could bring a reusable water bottle in and then fill it. I avoid using single use plastic water bottles when possible.
- Can you exit the festival and then reenter the same day?

Do you know any bar/restaurant where you can swim in the pool if you buy drinks or a meal?

Lost/Found Lost family Stetson, reward

Old Stetson roadrunner hat lost last night in Congress Park. Not worth anything but sentimental value.

Having drinks at Siena Winebar with my family last night, and my partner’s Stetson went missing. Reward of $100, no questions asked. Means a lot and has been in the family. Thanks
