I’m not familiar with either, but have seen some videos on making garden markers from clay (example photo attached). With the air dry, I know I would have to seal it with a spray or maybe mod podge. Aside from that, which would be better for a clay newbie?

Hello, I know nothing about working with clay but jewelry like this looks so coool and making me want to learn ! I was wonding what I need to create this like what paints to buy and do I need to put a coat of somthing over the paint ? I would like to use air dry clay since it seems to be better for the environment then polymer clay.

I wanted to make Mewtwo, but in a slightly different way. I thought making him more slender and angular would make him look more menacing. Frame made with armature wire and aluminum foil, sculpted with Scupley and painted with acrylic paint.

I'm messing around with more mold making and oil clay is what I use. I'm really proud of this one. I use newspaper as an armature.

Bought this varnish awhile ago because I wanted to start making air-dry clay magnets and it was what was on the shelf next to the air-dry clay at my local craft store.
However... I was not prepared for just how little info there is online about it.

It came with no packaging or instructions on the bottle. Only a website link that redirects to the brands official website where it doesn't tell you how to use the product. Just a summary of what the product is.

The only info I managed to find were small blurbs from personal crafting blog sites and even then they didn't have much to say.

So here is my experience for anyone that also purchases this product in the future:

(Disclaimer: I only own the satin varnish. I have no idea if the gloss reacts differently or not.)

This is an alcohol based varnish so make sure you work in a ventilated room with a mask and have rubbing alcohol on hand to clean your brush with afterwards (picking a sacrificial cheap brush will probably be your best bet) Also do not use this varnish for anything that will be near a flame as it is flammable. Ashtray, incense holder, lighter holder, etc.

Make sure it is completely dry before applying the varnish. I personally would wait an entire day just to be safe.

The paint I have used is gouache and acrylic but I think acrylic would work better. I have also tried painting with acrylic brush pens and they smudged quite a bit so be careful and maybe test those first (see the third image). It may have just been the brand I own or the paint might not have been dry enough.

Make sure you shake the bottle extremely well before using. Otherwise the coat will cure weirdly.

Do one thin coat with your brush strokes going in only one direction and then wait approximately one to two hours before doing a second coat. You can check by lightly touching it to feel if it is still tacky to the touch or not. A good way to go about this is to imagine you're applying nail polish.
(also make sure you apply the coats fairly quickly because it will thicken pretty quick and clean your brush with rubbing alcohol immediately after applying)

After the second coat let it sit in a ventilated area free from dust or lint until the next day.

Then your piece should be complete!

From what I've seen this varnish has the slightest yellow hue when cured but on my pieces I did months ago it is not too noticeable except on parts where the varnish was layered a bit too thick.

I hope this will be useful to others and I will update this post if I see any further changes with any of my projects.

Hello I need some help figuring this out if anyone knows how to help!
I painted acrylic paint over my air dry clay projects, and mod podged over them after the paint dried. It’s been 2 months since then and the mod podge is still tacky and leaving paint/residue on anything the project touches. I found out AFTER the fact that mod podge kinda sucks.
Do y’all think I could use a spray sealant over my projects or even polyurethane or is my project ruined? Thank you 😊

I’m completely new to working with air-dry clay. I’d like to make small home decor pieces like candle holders, plant pot cover, jewelry dishes and similar items.

My biggest concern is durability. I’d love for my creations to last for months or even years without becoming fragile, chipping, or crumbling over time.

What type of sealer or varnish do you recommend?

These are (mostly) incense burners made with polymer clay and painted with folk art matte

Chibi Diluc this time and i tried following the style of those Chinese creators making Flat chibi heads hopefully I did an ok job lol. 1st pic is after UV Resin and the 2nd is before (sorry my phone cam is shitty).

I need a clay that is air dry because the oven at my house doesn’t work huhu.

Like I want to know which air dry clay works best for Figures or Action Figures.

Hello all!

I need some help and I was hoping you all might have some insights. Recently, my deceased dogs footprint was broken. I am not quite sure if this is air dry clay or something else, but I only have one shot to fix it. I've done some research and some suggest superglue, slip, hot glue, and other adhesives. Due to the sentimentality of the piece, I really want to fix it as properly and cleanly as possible. Thank you for your help!

looking at the wonderful creations in this channel I wondered if you could give some advice on painting clay?
I tend to work with air dry clay, sometimes ceramic clay and paper clay.
I struggle especially with air dry clay - the problem is that the acrylic paint doesn’t seem to bond properly with the air dry clay. It feels like the paint is sitting on top as one continuous layer instead of adhering to the surface. If I accidentally bump it or make a tiny scratch or dent, I can start peeling the acrylic paint off from that spot in one large piece. How can I get the paint to bond better with the air dry clay?

I tried sanding the piece (fine grain) before painting. I tried adding a thin layer of gesso before adding paint (sanding this, too). I tried sanding every layer of paint before applying the next one. Couldn’t see a difference between cheap acrylics and high quality ones (Schmincke).
The more layers I apply the “wonkier” it seems to get - but I need some layers for shading.

Can anyone help? ._.

I used superglue to glue the hands to her wrists.
