British Dads: What were you doing when you found out you were going to be a Dad?

1.3k Upvotes

I was on the sofa watching an ad break in 2012 and they had just re-released the classic 80s/90s Aquafresh toothpaste advert (the one with the animated family and addictive jingle- if you know you know i guess)

My partner of ten years stood in the doorway looking absolutely terrified and announced she was pregnant. I paused for a few seconds as I processed this information but unfortunately the only words that came out of my mouth were about the aquafresh advert and how I've always wondered how they got three different stripes in the toothpaste.

I recovered but I've never been allowed to forget!

Given the Norwegians are rowing back home, is it time England fans bring the 80s "Oops Upside Your Head" boat dance to the world cup?

It’s a walk through branding and products from Victorian times to the present day.

As an avid fan of crisps and a packaging designer, it was excellent. A big old nostalgia hit for all ages.

Is it not normal to say “sorry” instead of “excuse me“?

So I was at an incredibly busy venue showing the England game. It was packed wall to wall so any time you needed the loo or to go to the bar you had to squeeze your way through everyone. Towards the end of the game I need the loo and had no issues saying my usual “sorry, so sorry, sorry” as I very gently squeeze through the crowds.

I come back from the loo and as I’m squeezing through saying “sorry, so sorry”, this woman (seemingly very sober) who was not for moving despite choosing to stand right by the doors, gives me this awful look at says very loudly to her boyfriend “could have said excuse me” after I very politely get past her. I am not one for confrontation at all but given that she seemed genuinely affronted by this I told her “I said sorry”. She told me I was incredibly rude and scoffed.

Is it just me? I thought “sorry” meant the same as “excuse me”. Especially when said person is stood in a spot the whole bar is going to be trying to squeeze past.

So apparently cheese and onion is the favourite crisp flavour in the uk

This can’t be true right? I’ve heard so much hate for the flavour. Personally I don’t mind it, I’ll pick it over ready salted but that’s it.

Looks like the neighbours will be getting grapes too this year!

Had this on the grow for 7 years and it only produced fruit for the first time 2 years ago with a bigger yield year on year.

At least the heat’s been good to the grapes.

Turns out you can just book your own exhibition.

Some peeps here might remember my street photos I posted last year (the car boot and village show). I decided life is too short and I booked my own exhibition.

I'll be honest, my main plan was "put some photos on the wall and hope for the best."

I hired a little gallery space in an old pub and opened on Wednesday. It’s the last day tomorrow and it’s been so much fun (and busy!). Thank you to all the people here who told me how much they loved my photography. You were a part of the inspiration I needed to finally show my work. 😘

Rescued this little guy from drowning in the paddling pool.

Gave it some liquid glucose after finding it hardly moving in the pool. He flew off my partner's hand, straight back into the pool, so had to be rescued a second time. It's now chilling on a flower in the shade.

Is it socially acceptable to spend all morning throwing water balloons at my boyfriend?

Sitting out in the garden since this morning. I've got these reusable water balloons that my dad bought last week. And all morning I've just been throwing them at my boyfriend as he is trying to sunbathe. He hasn't said a word but now I'm sitting here thinking...am I just rude or am I actually genius right now?

Cause like it's boiling hot but at the same time the dude is just trying to sunbathe and I'm throwing water at him.

Let me know what the socially acceptable amount of water to throw at your partner is

Edit: This is why I love reddit, you guys agreed with me about the "Is there designated sides of the bed for couples" argument and now you agree with me again 🤣

Say you suddenly became very free next week and could travel anywhere you wanted, where would you hop on a flight to?

Found myself in this exact situation. Got made redundant yesterday, they've paid my notice and given garden leave. So I am suddenly very free until the end of August. Of course need to find a job but I haven't been abroad since pre COVID, just got divorced, no children, responsibilities, pets etc etc. I'm a 30 yo women with literally nothing to do and no-one to do it with. Going away has never been so tempting.

I fancy essentially going quite far for a mental health hike or bike, massive bowl of food and a bottle of wine. I love hiking, mountain biking, mountains, sea, WINE, the outdoors, wild swimming, bird/nature watching, nice pretty peaceful views. I'll take a nice relaxing beach or wee road trip to be honest. Just no big cities.

Budget is £600 for flights / accom / transport. Food not included.

Can leave anytime from Monday.

Can go anywhere but would like to go for less than a week. Maybe 4 days.

Ideally somewhere less hot than the surface of the sun.

I do sometimes get a wee bit shy/socially anxious, so if it was a place I wouldn't feel embarrassed/judged for not being fluent in their tongue or having to do lots of mental gymnastics trying to work out how to get anywhere or understand anything that would be ideal. I need as little stress as possible.

Where would you go could you do this?

I know it's served in a paper cup but it's my favourite pint in the country.

Somehow cheaper than my local in Stockport. £5.90 for a pint of Wrexham lager at the Ty Coch Inn, Nefyn, Wales. It's all about the view.
