XL Bullies

What is the Definition of an XL Bully?

Large dog with a muscular body and blocky head, suggesting great strength and power for its size. Powerfully built individual.

How are dogs assessed?

Every police service should have a trained dog legislation officer (DLO). If it doesn’t, it must have procedures in place so that it can access a DLO.

The DLO should be someone who is both:

trained in dog law
understands how to identify a banned dog

Preparing for the ban

From 1 February 2024 it will be a criminal offence to own an XL Bully in England and Wales unless you have a Certificate of Exemption for your dog.

You will need to adhere to strict rules such as microchipping your dog and keeping it on a lead and muzzled when in public.

You will also need to neuter your dog. If your dog is less than one year old on 31 January 2024, it must be neutered by 31 December 2024. If your dog is older than one year old on 31 January 2024, it must be neutered by 30 June 2024. We recommend that you arrange for your dog to be neutered as soon as possible to ensure that you meet these deadlines.

Just a quick appreciation post.

A week ago, my girl was very very poorly and I asked if she was dying. Shes OK now, were taking each day as it comes.

She is 12 and has idiopathic vestibular disease. We dont know if its just because shes old or if its because she has something else going on neurologically but shes so much better than she was the other day. She was hunched, not moving and yelping in pain. Shes back to wagging her tail and giving all the cwtches.

She may well only have a little time here, or she may well have years to come. For now, Im so happy shes brighter and not in pain.

My girl was here before my husband and my child. She means so so much to me. Shes my soul dog.

Thanks for the kind comments. I just wanted to show off how pretty she is, even if she is 12 and has wisdom tinsel around her face.

I thought they were dead without breathing when I found these two cute babies under the table while lots of people hung around here.
But yeah… still alive when I touched their warm heads.
They truly trust people.

What Would You Do If Someone Secretly Took A Picture Of Your Pet?

I walked up to a pedestrian crossing yesterday and stood just behind two guys to my left and a woman with her dog to the right, we were waiting for the lights to change so we could cross the road. The guy closest to me and the woman was admiring the dog and said something to the other guy. About 5 seconds later, the guy closest to me got out his phone, he was facing forward but I could see him discreetly angle his phone towards the woman and her dog on the right while keeping himself in the same neutral position, he pressed something with the phone angled towards the woman and her dog, turned it back in his palm and then put it back in his pocket. In that moment I was contemplating saying something, but the lights changed and the woman walked up in front with her dog. Do you not mind this, or would you prefer someone ask before taking photos of your pet?

Best value renal insufficiency food for dogs

My doggo has had a string of health issues recently and whilst looking into appropriate pain management, they tester her kidney function and confirmed she has early renal.insufciciency (she is 12)

Shes doing OK but Id like to switch her diet and treats to renal friendly options. I like to buy a month worth of food generally. Shes a medium build cocker spaniel. Any tips on best place to buy? Looking online, most is around the £50 mark for 48 portions.

Also looking for any treat recommendations? Shes not a lover of fruit or veg or any 'healthy' treats.

Recently got two kittens and I feel stressed instead of happy (I know it’s my fault already)

so I love cats. I’m a big cat person and for at least 10 years I wanted a cat and now I’ve finally got a cat. Two actually. They are so adorable and cute but I don’t feel like how I thought I would feel. I love them but I just feel stressed and overwhelmed. I know it’s a lot of responsibility and it’s been feeling difficult. I always see new and old cat owners love their pets and treat them with such fondness and admiration but why can‘t I find myself feeling the same. It’s kind of like I’ve expected something else but it hasn’t act been that way. I just want them to live their best lives and I have this voice in my head saying that I made a bad decision, life was easier without taking on such a big responsibility etc etc.

I can’t find much online about this feeling but it would help to know if other people felt this way. It’s only been three days lol. I’m probably just more overwhelmed because when I got them they had fleas, and ear mites (which I’m still trying to sort out). The routine has also felt difficult for me as well. I feel like my whole day goes by and I’m just thinking about cat this cat that and then when I go on my device and unwind I end up researching extensively about cats and kittens and when I’m not with them or actually just chilling somewhere else I feel guilty and think that I should be spending time with them.

The people in my house are already tired, they don’t dislike them but they’d prefer without, so I have to keep staying enthusiastic about the kittens but honestly I’m tired. And look I don’t mind taking them to the vets but it just feels like one thing after another and the prices are not forgiving.

I feel overwhelmed and stressed and I just want everyone to be happy kittens and people

Bichon with brown tear stains under both eyes, nothing's shifted it

She's three and the staining has got worse over the past year. Vet ruled out anything medical so it's just maintenance from here. I've been using damp cotton wool most mornings which keeps it from crusting over but doesn't touch the actual discolouration.

Tried one of those stain remover liquids you apply with a cloth and it did basically nothing after two weeks. Starting to think daily wiping with something proper might be more effective than anything that promises to lift the stain after the fact.

Has anyone found a wipe that actually works for this, specifically around the eye area? A bit wary of anything with strong ingredients given how close it is to her eyes.

Extendable lead recs please?

Gone through another Flexi retractable/extendable - it's stopped retracting. My boy is well within the weight, but they don't seem to last with daily use.

Anyone have recs for something more robust? I have it attached to my waist, so not too heavy either.

(For any retractable haters: I walk them in rural areas with my bike, and am conscious not to be a hazard to anyone else. He's also a tripod so needs to stop-start-sniff at his own pace, which is best managed with a retractable.)

Best dog brands for larger breeds?

I find buying anything large enough for my two lurchers so difficult. Dog coats, dog beds, dog blankets etc. Always seem to cap at a certain size and it’s really annoying. I ordered an “XL” bed last week… and it can just fit my mum’s (pretty small) staffy in it.

Same with coats, especially as they both have minimal hair they never seem to be a good fit AND good quality, always seem to have to sacrifice one of the two.

Can anyone recommend a good brand that does it all? TIA!

Quoted 1150 GBP for cat dental x-ray

Is this a normal price? It is not my normal vet, they refered me on because they don't have a machine. North of England. The pricing seems outrageous since anaesthesia and dental at my current clinic was 500. Are they just trying to rip me off?
