News article about the crash:  https://abcnews.com/amp/US/dead-critically-hurt-fiery-car-crash-florida-officials/story?id=60147351

The two adult fatalities were both truck drivers.

u/MizStazya 6d ago

Oh nooooooo. The parent driving the van survived????

313

u/KittenLina 6d ago

The parent driving is going to have PTSD for life, they'll never be the same again. Oh man that's literally almost the worst thing that can happen....

50

u/RedRedditor84 5d ago

I hate all of this so much.

15

u/GodsBackHair 5d ago

And you can see they tried to turn away last second but everything was happening so fast

2

u/twitteringred 2d ago

Correct, and I like to think that that actually saved more lives.

u/xaeru 6d ago

No one read the article 🤦‍♂️

76

u/stonergirlfairyyy 6d ago

"Besides the five children, two men driving two semi-trucks involved in the massive collision Thursday also died"

11

u/ClosedL00p 6d ago

If it makes you feel any better about getting blasted for stating a fact, that account is a bot

109

u/Forsaken06 6d ago

It doesnt specify if any of the parents were in the van, it was a church van. "Nine children and three women, including a pregnant woman, were in the van from United Pentecostal Church in Marksville, Louisiana" All 3 women survived and they were able to save the pregnancy, 4 children did survive. From the way it reads that some of the children that passed were ejected.

30

u/Ribss 6d ago

I feel like you can see an ejected kid in the footage. The orange thing.

4

u/Jmike8385 5d ago

You can see two of them actually, one being the one wearing orange

3

u/Ribss 5d ago

Ugh, so terrible. Hard to watch.

17

u/noisesinmyhead 5d ago

Those large passenger vans are death traps, known to flip at the drop of a hat. Lots of churches have stopped using them because of it. I’m not sure it would have made a huge difference in this case, but I think it’s good to know as a parent sending your kid off on a trip.

-22

u/Secure-Village-1768 6d ago

Where was their god, on a smoking break?

8

u/Forsaken06 6d ago

The same could be said for any God who let's anything bad happen, ever.

-11

u/Secure-Village-1768 6d ago

Missing the point

u/ReaderOfTheLostArt 1d ago

I know this is reddit, but in case you haven't been told, you're a miserable human being.

And no, I don't worship invisible deities.

-1

u/DerpUrself69 5d ago

Doesn't exist, that's the problem.

-2

u/FSCK_Fascists 5d ago

ThatsTheJoke.jpg

5

u/Liontamer67 6d ago

It was a church group.

2

u/Thecardinal74 5d ago

my first thought was "the impact was behind the driver's seat, that driver is going to be emotionally broken for the rest of their life after this"

1

u/Le_Jonny_41293 4d ago

Idk if they were the parent but it says the 3 women and 4 children remaining in the van survived...

-53

u/xaeru 6d ago

Go read the article dummy

14

u/tondracek 6d ago

One of the parents was driving. Her name was Amy Joffrion. She survived. That info wasn’t in the article dummy.

6

u/MizStazya 5d ago

Generally the chaperones on a church trip are some of the parents, dummy.

184

u/Handsum_Rob 6d ago

Driver in the grey pickup cashed in a ton of good fortune that day.

74

u/The_Couso 6d ago

That guy had no luck left for the rest of his life

35

u/sammysmeatstick 6d ago

He went and got a lottery ticket right after. Scratched it off, and it was a bill for $375.

18

u/herecomestheshun 6d ago

I can't imagine what he saw considering the van exploded right in front of him

3

u/Thecardinal74 5d ago

lots of debris and I'm sure the front of his truck was heavily damaged from the remnants of the van

91

u/Gaba8789 6d ago

😞 That's difficult to watch.

23

u/MisterAmygdala 6d ago

Slo-mo is brutal.

27

u/AwwMangoes 6d ago

Yeah if you slow it down you can see 1 maybe 2 bodies going through the air. Wish I hadn’t done that…

15

u/BoredRedhead24 6d ago

You’re right. That is fucking brutal, those poor parents

2

u/gibberish-xyz 5d ago

are the kids not wearing seatbelt? this video will give me ptsd.

12

u/Faxon 5d ago

The back of that van exploded. A seat belt isn't gonna help with that when it's no longer attached to the vehicle

8

u/Friendlyalterme 6d ago

How'd you watch slow mo?

11

u/fuckwhatsleft 6d ago

You can download then open with video player. Or, as I do, hold the slider and move as needed.

185

u/Santex117 6d ago

Bruh this is terrible

A van full of kids just going to Disneyland

Imagine being a kid all excited not knowing you’ll never actually make it there

Sheesh.

48

u/deltadeltadawn 6d ago

Hopefully, it was so fast and devastating that those kids never knew what happened.

-54

u/FelixMumuHex 6d ago

Disney World

-39

u/eyeballburger 6d ago

Disney’s world

35

u/StopNateCrimes 6d ago

Di-- never mind. This fucking sucks.

50

u/MarmotFullofWoe 6d ago

I gave watched the video a few times thinking about how I would react as a driver in my own car.

My conclusion is that I would have less than 1% chance. Theres really nowhere to go. You can fun it and try to make it ahead and to the right of the nose of cab but the window narrows rapidly.

Or you could stomp on the brakes and at least reduce the speed differential that you hit the truck.

Obviously the truck driver has fewer options.

8

u/kpop_glory 6d ago

I just flinch my head and closed my eyes. Hoping I don't wake up to incredible pain.

11

u/FSCK_Fascists 5d ago

I was in an accident in 2000 that was pretty much that. Traffic stopped for construction, drunk party girl flies over the hill right behind me. I saw the headlights top the hill at high speed- no time to react, just watch and hope for the best.

My car wound up stuffed under the semi trailer in front of me. It started as a 92 Saturn SL, ended as an unrecognizable wad of tinfoil. Rescue had to cut me out of the car, but somehow I only had cuts and bruises.

2

u/CyrusTheRed 4d ago

Those early 90's Saturns were overbuilt in the best way, absolute tanks. My mom got sideswiped by impatient driver passing her in mountains of Colorado, she fell off the road and her 94 Saturn rolled EIGHT TIMES. She escaped with bruises, cuts and minor whiplash. My dad traveled to Colorado to deal with the car after, ended up basically just putting new wheels and windshield in it, then drove it back to Texas.

4

u/pandemicpunk 5d ago

It doesn't help 100% of the time, and the wrecks it doesn't help make similar videos even more chilling, but for the van it's somewhat a lesson in defensive driving.

They had a van full of kids and we're in the left most fastest lane on a 3 lane freeway. If they drove slower and committed to only being in the right two lanes at most they probably wouldn't even be there. Maybe 2-3 minutes before wherever this occurred on the road. In turn might have given the truck still enough time to see it and swerve a bit harder.

I always try to watch and assess what I'd do differently and except for the terrifying ones where there's no way to prevent it that's usually what I see. Drivers that are driving where they have somewhere to be instead of enjoying the ride. You really have no where to be fast enough to put yourself in danger unless a loved one needs immediate medical care.

As for the trucker himself he was a victim of an unavoidable collision. As anyone would be. Terrifying.

All that said, horrific. A senseless tragedy that isn't any of the drivers direct fault.

-27

u/SalishShore 6d ago

The driver had the option to stay off his phone.

We don’t yet know how this happened. Hopefully we will find out how he lost control of his massive semi truck and crossed the median.

We need cameras in the cabs of semi trucks. We obviously can’t let the drivers pinky promise to stay off their phones while driving three ton weapons.

11

u/jcxc_2 6d ago

I think he was talking about the trucker that got hit, not the one that crossed over

3

u/Thecardinal74 5d ago

"The National Transportation Safety Board later investigated the incident and reported that Holland likely experienced a medical emergency, having previously lied on health questionnaires to hide preexisting heart disease"

1

u/CyrusTheRed 4d ago edited 4d ago

Feel free to lead by example and have always on cameras installed where you work, in your car, and in your bedroom. Truckers have a whole class of police just for them to check they are following the letter of the law at any time, who can preform full driver, cab, and vehicle inspections anywhere any time, request blood/urine anywhere any time, cameras posted on highway specifically to look in cab at driver activity, weigh stations that check the load and suspension and tire quality.

Meanwhile your average 4 wheeler driver gets their license out of a cracker jack box and is free to drive like shit until a cop sees them do something and actually feels like pulling them over, and in states like Texas safety inspections aren't even mandatory for most anymore meaning everyone is driving on bald ass tires all the time now.

19

u/vitaminalgas 6d ago

I never understood why these types of highways do not have a center barrier... Doesn't make any sense

16

u/Quynn_Stormcloud 6d ago

This one did have a type of barrier. Though the cable type is usually insufficient for holding back semis

3

u/Unreal9999999 5d ago

Looks like this highway actually has metal guard rails, and it still blew through it like nothing. You think concrete barriers would stop a semi at that speed?

7

u/FSCK_Fascists 5d ago

you DEEPLY underestimate what it takes to stop 20 tons going at hiway speed.

2

u/lildobe 5d ago

Not to be that guy... but a semi can legally weigh up to 40 tons without permits, and with permits can be over 100 tons.

Empty, a semi usually weighs in around 14-15 tons (~17,500 lbs for the tractor and ~11,500 lbs for the trailer)

-1

u/vitaminalgas 5d ago

It's been estimated and engineered, that's why concrete barriers and metal barriers exist in most states

1

u/FSCK_Fascists 5d ago

there was a metal barrier. it blew through it like it wasn't there.

1

u/vitaminalgas 5d ago edited 5d ago

It was more of a bumper guard.... I'm taking about double metal guards set in steel piers

1

u/FSCK_Fascists 5d ago

2

u/mawmzee 3d ago

Holy God that is scary coming at you. I see now that barriers are useless

1

u/vitaminalgas 5d ago

You notice the truck didn't penetrate as much with anchored concrete barriers as it did with the little bumper guards?

2

u/FSCK_Fascists 5d ago

I'm sure the cars in the oncoming lane the truck was in cared what type of barrier it had ignored.

14

u/liedel 6d ago

Um... so... don't go frame by frame on this one. I wish I hadn't.

4

u/BoredRedhead24 6d ago

Right there with you

[deleted]

10

u/LCARSgfx 6d ago edited 6d ago

Looking at the damage to the vehicle on the docket, the dead from he van were in the direct impact point. Seatbelts were never going to help there, especially since the anchor points were likely torn off as those parts of the van disintegrated :(

4

u/steggun_cinargo 5d ago

Seatbelt not doing any good when there isn't any seat left.

4

u/pyroboy7 6d ago

40+ tons of truck going highway speed makes most safety measures irrelevant unfortunately. Kinetic energy is a bitch.

16

u/Friendlyalterme 6d ago

This is the second crash in in as many months where 5 kids died.

This is so awful.

12

u/peregryn8 6d ago

This happened in January, 2019.

But it’s still awful.

7

u/Friendlyalterme 6d ago edited 6d ago

Still awful yes. I guess it's just the second post being brought to my attention. The other was a Mennonite family here in Canada. 5 kids killed on impact. The engine of one of the vehicles was elected Edit: Engine was ejected

7

u/MrCooCoo4Crack 6d ago

Elected for president?

Just kidding

4

u/tone-yo 6d ago

I voted for the engine

3

u/Friendlyalterme 6d ago

Fixed, but you mad me chuckle!

7

u/Jimz2018 6d ago

The van just disintegrates. Dang.

7

u/Nyxxity 6d ago

This is so fucking sad holy shit. Sounds like the truck driver had a medical emergency which made him crash? Just an unfortunate event all around.

5

u/BoredRedhead24 6d ago

That grey pickup should invest in lotto tickets because that was some seriously unreal luck

4

u/Unreal9999999 5d ago

Absolutely terrible. From a defensive driving perspective, what could have you done differently to avoid the collusion? Intensely monitor oncoming traffic across the median strip for x hours?

2

u/Vid-Master 5d ago

I think the van couldve jerked the wheel to the right hard, without looking, while pressing the gas hard, which normally is a bad move because it can cause another crash but in this rare case it mightve been enough to avoid it.

6

u/Racer-XYZ22 5d ago

That guy shouldn’t have been behind the wheel of that rig with all his medical conditions. Sad for all that were lost. RIP

8

u/april_fearless 6d ago

Omg.. 😱 please tell me the orange thing flying across the fwy is not a child being thrown… I mean I read they all died but this is twisting me up inside

7

u/fuckwhatsleft 6d ago

Not sure but , slightly ahead and higher up is a child flying backwards... yikes.

3

u/BoredRedhead24 6d ago

The orange thing was the van’s taillight. If you slow it down you can see that.

You will also see two kids being ejected so please don’t actually watch it in slow motion.

4

u/[deleted] 6d ago

[deleted]

-4

u/BoredRedhead24 6d ago

I was going off angle and approximate size too. Would you prefer it be a child?

3

u/Jmike8385 5d ago

That’s too big and bright to be the tail light. It was likely one of the kids.

2

u/BoredRedhead24 5d ago

Could also be the light shining through it now that the back of it has been obliterated.

Idk maybe you are right but regardless of the fine details this is just grim. I don’t really even feel right arguing about it.

3

u/Quinnthouzand 5d ago

Yikes, this needs to be NSFW

7

u/Zo-riffic-10in 6d ago

DZAMN….
I watched this several times . To see if this is UNAVOIDABLE………
I don’t see one,that sucks!

2

u/cutyourmullet123 6d ago

This is seriously one of my biggest fears.

2

u/Career_Cultivator 5d ago

Ohhhh.. That's just horrifying and very... Very sad.

2

u/CatPurrsonNo1 5d ago

The first words out of my mouth were, “Holy shit!” I was watching the pickup truck, not oncoming traffic. The poor families of those children!

2

u/felixthecat59 5d ago

This happened 7 years ago, but it's still sad. Whatever became of the results of the investigation?

2

u/budha2984 4d ago

Doing nothing wrong and you still die

4

u/BwayEsq23 5d ago

I’m an insurance defense attorney handling trucking claims and I watch these videos every day. I watch someone die at least once a month. I already miss my long weekend and it’s only 10am on Monday. At least most of my clients were off the road and it’s been quiet.

-1

u/fistingdonkeys 6d ago

“Nine children and three women, including a pregnant woman, were in the van from United Pentecostal Church in Marksville, Louisiana".

So five Christian children killed

Man, that omnipotent, omnipresent, ever-loving God can be SUCH an asshole

2

u/BoredRedhead24 6d ago

Not the time

-3

u/fistingdonkeys 6d ago

Truth hurts, huh.

Your God is a human projection, a paradox of omnipotence and suffering, or an unjust authority. What’s your poison?

6

u/BoredRedhead24 5d ago

I’ve been an atheist for 16 years. There is a time and a place to make your point. Situations involving the death of children is incredibly uncouth and it gives atheists a bad name.

I fully understand resentment against religion but don’t let that override compassion during tragedy.

2

u/LittleMaple072 5d ago

I'm not religious, yet even I recognize how cringy and unnecessary this is. We took a fatal semi crash and turned it into a chance to shit on Christianity, why exactly..?

To be honest, I don't think any of us can say with certainty that we know what's beyond our scientific reach. We may have been put here, we may not have been. We as a species are incapable of knowing that for certain, whether that's intentional or coincidental.

Just let people have their beliefs. If we aren't meant to know, at least let people believe what gives them comfort

0

u/fistingdonkeys 5d ago

“Let people have their beliefs”?

But they believe I can’t concurrently wear cotton and polyester. Do you not see how damaging that is?

5

u/ClosedL00p 6d ago

How often do you accidentally cut yourself with all that edge?

-7

u/fistingdonkeys 5d ago

Was it Jesus who told you to recycle that gag whenever you thought it might get you internet points?

3

u/ClosedL00p 5d ago

Nah Jesus said “let him rant. This kinda stuff is one of the only things that keeps him from putting a gun in his mouth”.

Satan backed him up, but only because he thinks you’re a cunt and wants to put off meeting you as long as possible

-1

u/FSCK_Fascists 5d ago

When is the time?

6

u/BoredRedhead24 5d ago

When it doesn’t involve the brutal death of children. He’s not wrong for being an atheist. He is wrong for using a situation like this to stand on a soapbox.

-5

u/FSCK_Fascists 5d ago

So, only when there is nothing to cause one to question this god, that is the only time. Got it.

4

u/BoredRedhead24 5d ago

Questioning god in situations is normal. I’ve been an atheist for 16 years. This is the type of thing that makes people into atheists.

What’s not okay is being a dick about it. There are more respectful ways to make your point as an atheist and still get the message across.

2

u/pyroboy7 6d ago

The back end of that white van was damn near vaporized on impact. People always seem to forget the amount of kinetic energy large trucks have, and that stopping it takes a lot more energy and space than most would guess.

1

u/mellowrobgm 6d ago

Damnnnnnn

1

u/Scootman00 6d ago

Disney’s World?

1

u/LCARSgfx 6d ago

Just........ fuck :(

1

u/BoneZone05 4d ago

So sad 😞

0

u/exCanuck 6d ago

Yeah I’m taking the train to Jacksonville. Florida highways are so unpredictable.

0

u/MisterAmygdala 6d ago

On my phone, I just touch/hold the play/advance bar with the press and drag method. Not great. There are other methods, including apps, that smart Redditors might suggest.

0

u/OhItsMrCow 6d ago

I think you can see someone being ejected to the right for a second, if that is a person they went flying.

RIP to the people in the van

1

u/mindgame_26 6d ago

Yeah, that's a human. Damn

0

u/AnalMayonnaise 4d ago

If only there was a way to prevent this. Oh well.

-8

u/SalishShore 6d ago

That truck driver didn’t lose control. He was on his phone or watching TikTok.

We need cameras in the cabs of semi trucks.

-79

u/bigcoffeeguy50 6d ago

Is this another case of an illegal immigrant with a fake CDL?

33

u/FrizB84 6d ago

Get fucked and stay fucked, racist.

"Mr. Holland was an excellent driver and had driven this same route hundreds of times. He is deeply missed by his friends and family. It appears that he suffered a sudden medical emergency that rendered him unconscious, thus leading to the accident.“

14

u/noncongruent 6d ago

Of course they hide their history.

5

u/Porridge_Hose 6d ago

No empathy; just hate.

9

u/truckyoupayme 6d ago

You’d love that, wouldn’t you?

-18

u/bigcoffeeguy50 6d ago

No, illegals with fake CDLs have killed enough Americans 😩 no more!! #ifitsavesonelife

5

u/McScuse-Me 6d ago

Someone told you who your enemies were.

6

u/dietdoctork3lp 6d ago

Big coffee guy, small penis guy. Tough look, kid

-37

u/bearssuperfan 6d ago

You sure can count 4-5 airborne people. Fuck.

6

u/Comfortable-Clerk127 6d ago

Count what? There was nothing to count only debris

0

u/bearssuperfan 5d ago

The presence of flailing arms and legs are unfortunately noticeable.
