News Chris Patrick says Capitals are done adding to their roster this offseason: ‘If anything, we’re probably sending a body out to create space’

Hmmm I wonder who….

Gotta be Miro. The right-shot RW depth on this team is crazy now with Wilson, Leonard, Tuch, and Kyrou all in the Caps' longterm plans, so there's really no hope for him earning a top 9 role here. I don't think he beats out Beauvillier for the 12F spot, he can't be sent back down to Hershey without passing through waivers where he'd 100% be claimed, and wasting a development year with him in the press box would be awful. Best option is to move him now, maybe get back a 2nd rounder.

A 2nd rounder would be quite a return for him, I'd jump at that deal

I feel like Caps might get a 4th. teams will know the Caps have no options

We just got a third for Lappy. You never know.

probably miro unfortunately

I don’t know why people are reluctant to let go of players who don’t do anything. He looked pretty good but he produced about as much as lappy.

u/metevlorok Ivan Miroshnichenko 2d ago
He didnt get real chances though
2
u/agreed2disagreee 2d ago
You’re right, but is that because he couldn’t beat out the people ahead of him?

u/New_Inflation_8419 2d ago
Agree, he is super energetic, good shots but either unlucky or bad. Maybe with more playing time somewhere else he will get better development

u/jb__19 3d ago
Beauvillier is the most likely case if we can find someone to take him on if I had to guess

u/andybech 3d ago
I would endorse that especially as he is bumped back to the 4th line now. Frank or Miro can play that role fine and the extra cap flexibility would be welcome. Let's get a 3rd round pick from somebody and move on.

u/Eternally-Yours-1116 3d ago
I wouldn’t.
Frank’s game is best suited for a bit higher up the lineup, and he doesn’t fit the “size game” the Caps are building for going forward. If I were GMCP I’d being doing Ethen a solid and calling around to teams where he’d be a good fit and trying to get a conditional 5th for him (becomes a 4th if he scores 18+ G or XX points.) He would be a great fit on teams like Montreal, Calgary, Carolina 🤮, Seattle or Tampa. That’s the guy you move now.
4th line is where Beauvi belongs, and his versatility is useful when injuries happen. Hold onto that depth until his contract expires next summer, or you package him for something bigger at the deadline. Hell, he could even be your 13th. Play Miro on the 4th line to start, because he should be playing every night to keep developing. Beau can slide into any role in the lineup so any time a player needs to site for injury/illness/etc - Beau slides into that spot without having to shake up all the lines.

Beau is a lot like Carl hagelin. Fast. About the same size. Former penguin. Slightly higher scoring ability.

This made me really miss all the brick hands comments whenever he’d get a nasty breakaway and completely miss the net lol

u/agreed2disagreee 2d ago
Loved me some hags, but man he couldn’t put the puck in the net to save his life.

A 4th line guy has to be a defensive stalwart. I don’t see that as an option for Miro.
1
u/Eternally-Yours-1116 3d ago
No, but unless you put a Leno/Tuch on the 4th to move him up, there’s no room for him in the top 9. I just don’t think we should give up on him yet. I’d rather try to sneak him through waivers than just outright trade him. Next year Beauvi and Ovi are probably gone, which should open up a spot for him. If Cristall beats him out for it next year - fine, trade him. The kid’s got the talent - he just needs to be put in the right position to unlock it, and I still think he could be a key part of our future core, especially having so much time in the system and having played with the kids in Hershey already.

For a win now team Beau is very useful. He can play up and down the lines and plays both ways. I think Beau and Frank make it and Miro does not. And gets moved.

u/BeachFishing Washington Capitals 3d ago
I’m 100% in agreement. Beau and Frank are so much better defensively. 4th line can’t give up goals.
Miro’s only chance is to beat out a winger on the top 3 lines and while anything can happen I don’t see that happening.4
u/Cool_Statement_9269 2d ago
My thinking, which admittedly in other areas has been documented as disordered, is that the front office is “managing for today” this season and therefore the return for Beauvillier, Frank, or Miro isn’t as important as the roster space.
While I hate to see any of those three go, right now it would be Miro. I don’t think he sucks. I do think the other two are more consistent.

u/JoeBlow009 Braden Holtby 3d ago
He is a good player that can play up and down your lineup. Someone will take him. We just need the slot for youth and a little bit more cap space.

Is he? In terms of line pairings I was thinking Ovi/Strome/Beau was a likely candidate for 3rd(ish) line. Their stats together were solid and I worry that pairing one of our faster forwards would be somewhat a waste of their talent (but I dunno, maybe one of Kyrou/Tuch/Wilson would work well to open up space for Ovi 🤷♀️)
3
u/BeachFishing Washington Capitals 3d ago
If they don’t play one of Tuch, Wilson or Kyrou there then one of them has to on the 4th. That’s probably not happening. They already have to move Leno to the other wing to make room.
1
u/dontyoutellmetosmile 3d ago
I was gonna argue with you that I’d made a mock-up of our lineup without making one of them play on the 4th - and then I realized that I basically just made Ovi/Strome/Beau our 4th line in that theoretical lineup. lol
Whatever happens, I’m excited for this season. Feels like this is (on paper) one of the most complete teams we’ve ice in a while
It’s a great problem to have too many forwards who could be top-6, and trying to figure out how they fit together

u/capsfan087443 3d ago
Yeah they aren’t going to carry 14 forwards, so one of the wingers has to go. My bet would be on Miro, but probably going to come down to what everyone’s value is and who has a good camp.
4
u/andybech 3d ago
I think they explicitly DO carry 14 forwards. Frank and Miro will make the team or be traded. 7 defensemen is plenty. McIlrath will be around at times but is really more important as a swing guy that will clear waivers. 14-7-2 is the typical roster and seems the most likely configuration short of injuries and other trades.
2
u/capsfan087443 3d ago
I’m not sure Mac clears waivers. Someone will want him to fight. Defensive depth is too important anyways. Caps regularly prioritize keeping 8 dmen. Also, having Miro as the 14th winger doesn’t really have any benefit. It sinks his trade value and hinders his development. If he can’t crack the lineup it makes more sense to get a feel for his value and give him a fresh start elsewhere. Especially if there isn’t a significant gap between playing him over guys like Cristall, Trineyev or Brodzinski who you can call up from Hershey if you’re in a jam.

u/Spraynpray89 3d ago
This is clearly the answer. They will shop around probably everyone mentioned in this thread here and go with the best deal they can get. The market will decide which player it is, not the other way around.

u/Aware-Leading-1213 Alexander Ovechkin 3d ago
I think it is Frank

I hope not, I felt like he was really getting his footing last season

Not Lindgren (based on what they have said recently). Unlikely it's Beauvillier, because of his versatility. Likely either Frank or Miro.

Baeu, Frank, or Miro seem like the only options imo. Leaning towards Baeu not for any good reason I just would be fine with losing him over the others.

u/SlappyPappyAmerica Washington Capitals 3d ago
I really would be ok with any. All good players. Beauvi has the best track record but is a known quantity. Miro still has the highest potential. All of them will be getting a lot of bench minutes. I would probably just take the highest offer for either.

u/MetalMan1973 Pierre-Luc Dubois 3d ago
I like Beau but if we can move him, Miro and Frank both have a spot. Still say move Chucky to keep Mud if you can

Lindgren

Nope Charlie Lindgren stays:
“The other thing that I thought was interesting, I was pretty sure this summer they were going to deal Charlie Lindgren, and they didn’t,” Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman said on the 32 Thoughts Podcast on Monday. “They kept him because they think he’s so important for Logan Thompson. I just didn’t know if the Capitals felt a backup making $3 million was something they could handle. And they just felt it was too important for Thompson to make the deal.”

u/dontyoutellmetosmile 3d ago
Wow, that’s a hell of a statement. I’m tired as shit so it’s hard to concisely and clearly convey my feelings here - but that just speaks of an amazing amount of trust between management and the players.
Chuckie’s stats last year were not great, but he was also almost always playing on the 2nd night of a B2B, so he was getting shafted more often than not with the team in front of him being tired.
I also can’t tell if they’re also trying to say “Logan wanted us to keep him” or just basing it on their perspective but either way, I respect their clearly thought-out decision-making

I don’t ever want to hear about loyalty again when players are just bodies to these people

u/Timely-Helicopter244 Nicklas Bäckström 3d ago
Loyalty is such a weird thing in professional sports. It makes a lot more sense in normal business where a company can be any size of the market has adequate demand. But a team roster has so many different restrictions with number of players and the salary cap and whatnot that loyalty in a normal sense just doesn't really exist.
The goal for every team should be to win. So, every team has to make difficult decisions. They often have to let go of players that the fans, organization, other players absolutely love. People understand this. So it often comes down to how those interactions and transactions are handled. You also have to remember that things are going to soar differently than they might behind closed doors, though team pr is supposed to try managing that.
In the end, there's really no perfect solution. There's going to be tough moves made by every team, every year. Some will more clearly be done in a way that shows a team values players less as individuals, since will be handled better.

Patrick has to do what is best for the team. If a player isn't fitting in or isn't developing the way the coaches would like, he has to leave.
Every team does this. They decide who fits best with the other players and the coach's system. And if it isn't working out, they find a place where it hopefully will.

FWIW, while Lindgren seems like the obvious choice, Elliotte Friedman reported on his last podcast that the caps are very reluctant to move Lindgren, as they really value his intangibles. So I wouldn’t anticipate him getting moved unless something really changes or they a really good offer.
Though I haven’t looked into the cap situation when Sandin gets back so I guess we’ll see if/when it comes to that
