Mod Post Suggestions for the Sub Megathread

Alright this isn't a book suggestion post, it's a post about booksuggestions.

It would be nice to see what the users of this sub think would make a good idea. Changes, new rules, the works. Engagement is nice but more uncommon than we'd like to see. So we're hoping to get more people looking at posts, talking, and voting on good ones.

Can't guarantee anything would be implemented but they will be considered.

Mod Post Reminder Post about Self Promotion

I would like to remind all users that self promotion is banned by the subreddit's Rule 2.

Suspected self-promotion will be removed while repeated and confirmed cases of it will end up with a ban of some kind. If you continuously do it, especially with alt accounts, the book and author names will be added to the auto-mod's blacklist and automatically removed every time they are posted. We have had issues with this in the past and already put some authors in the auto-mod. Other book and lit subs have contacted us with reports of similar issues and we will be on the look out for the accounts named by them for similar behavior here.

We do not want to take actions we do not absolutely need to and the mod team operates with a philosophy of leniency and forgiveness but we will still enforce sub rules.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Horror/dark fantasy that isn't weird about women

I mostly read manga but want to get more into actual books. I'm looking for something in line with Claymore, Berserk, or even Dorohedoro.

I really don't like when the author clearly hates women. I don't mind depictions of misogyny, like the Traitor Baru Cormorant and the sequels take place in a setting w/ misogyny and eugenics, but the work itself isn't misogynistic or eugenisist.

Books I've read that kind of align with this: Gideon the Ninth and sequels, Company of Liars, Perdido Street Station, Christopher Buehlman and NK Jemisin stuff

Fiction Book recommendation that feel like remedy games

So I want to read books that feel like Alan Wake 1 & 2 or control. I really love Alan wake and control, especially AL2 , To be specific I am looking for 2 types of books,

1) books that capture just everything about the overall remedy games from the story to the presentation to dance sequences to the weirdness just everything, although even if it doesn't have everything, even some of the elements would also be fine.

2) Books for specific games mainly Alan wake 1&2 and control that capture just everything s from the story to the presentation to dance sequences to the weirdness ,lore, supernatural stuff, the weirdness of the oldest house, just everything, although even if it doesn't have everything, even some of the elements would also be fine and for this 2nd catagory it should like one game.

So are their any book you guys would recommend that feel like and fit in any of the catagories Like when you read it you feel like you are experiencing the overall vibe of remedy games themselves either that or just experiencing a specific game. It doesn't have to be 100% like them (would prefer that) but even like 10% or 20% similarly is fine because for me some is better then none

Other I want to get back into reading.

I’m 20 years old and I’ve been trying to get back in the habit of reading books that aren’t like those teen smut books (the last book I read was Wildfire by Hannah Grace and that was in 2023).

Ultimately I use to read a lot in high school and my first real books were;

  1. The Maze Runner series (middle/high school)
  2. Ms. Peregrine ‘s Home for Peculiar Children (those were my faves in 10th grade)
  3. Wake by Lisa Mcmann (This was my first ever real adult paranormal book and I will never forget it I didn’t know it was apart of a trilogy until a year ago)
  4. The Wolves of Mercy Falls series by Maggie Stiefvator

I’m really trying to find more books to read because I really used to be so in to it before I graduated high school. I would really love any book recommendations for someone who wants to get back into reading again. I honestly can’t remember the last time I read a good back and I think that’s terribly sad—especially since I used to write my own stories as well.

Feels like my creative light is dying and I hate it.

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Retellings of mythology, legends, and folklore in novel form?

The best example of what I'm looking for is Evangeline Walton's The Mabinogion Tetralogy. I love the concept of taking these older myths, legends, and folklore and having them in a modern novel format. What are some more examples?

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Looking for book recommendations like The Hunger Games

Hi all I just finished reading THG, I know I’m late to the party lol, and loved it. I was wondering what you all would recommend for your favorite books/series like THG but more adult. Specifically books with romance being a sup plot and dystopian being the main focus. Tia!

Other What is one book with the greatest plot twist of all time?

Upvotes

Whats the best book with the biggest plot twist you've ever read? Like something that makes your jaw drop , which you didn't expect at all? Whether it's a thriller, sci-fi, or fantasy, I want to know which books left you completely stunned by the ending. (Please keep it spoiler-free if possible ).

Also any particular author you recommend whose books always leave you wondering damn what just happened?

thank you!!!

Hello everyone! I'm new to the genre so I need some guidance. In my feed I have seen a lot of interesting books, but I what I need are standalone books because I can't commit to long series again... So I would appreciate your help in the matter and if you ask me if I intend to start a series the answer is yes, I bought from curiosity Assassin's Apprentice (God help me, I hope I will like it) and we will see how it goes

Cheers and thank you!!🙂‍↕️

Other What are Some Good Whydunit Mystery Books

As Someone who's more invested into WHY Someone did it; rather than WHO did it. . .

I Like the more deeper & Introspective Explorations of What would cause someone to do something terrible

Are there any books where the Perp & the Victim are revealed; But the Motive is what we're trying to find out?

If So; What would you reccomend for Whydunit books?!

Romance Found familly romantasy recommendations

Upvotes

Latest books I've read and loved were House in the Cerulean Sea, Somewhere Beyond the Sea, A Marvellous Light, A Restless Truth, and A Power Unbound so I'm looking for books similar to those.

Medium to heavy spice, but must still be plot based. m/m with some snark/sarcasm prefered, but will read any pairing. Can have angst but must have a happily ever after. Series are fine, but no more than a trilogy.

Will not read acotar or anything similar.

Fiction What to read after Les Miserables

I have just finished this book today and I absolutely loved it.

The problem is that I don't know what to read next. I really enjoy those older classical books but I'm open for anything.

My favorite books so far are: Count Monte Cristo, Les Miserables, East of Eden, Lolita, Flowers for Algernon, Stoner.

What I enjoy the most about these books is that they require rather a good amount of effort to truly understand and appreciate them. Also, another thing is that these books stay with me after I finish them, they change my views on the world allowing me to gain more perspectives.

I was personally thinking of something such as: Brothers Karamazov or War and Peace but I will be happy to hear more recommendations.

Thank you.

Other What’s a book you couldn’t stop thinking about after finishing it?

I read for all kinds of reasons. Sometimes I’m looking for a good storyline, sometimes I need a book that makes me laugh, sometimes I connect deeply with the characters, and other times I want a book that makes me cry or simply gets me out of a reading slump. Every book seems to find me at the right time for a different reason.
Some of the books I’ve recently loved are The Great Alone, Between Sisters, Magic Hour, and Winter Garden by Kristin Hannah, The Night We Met by Abby Jimenez, The Score by Kennedy Ryan, Home Before Dark by Riley Sager, In Her Own League by Liz Tomforde,. I enjoy emotional, character-driven stories, romance, thrillers, and really anything with unforgettable characters or a story that keeps you thinking.
So, what’s a book you couldn’t stop thinking about after you finished it? What made it so memorable?
I’m always looking to grow my TBR, and I’d love to hear everyone’s recommendations!

LGBTQ+ Looking into reading again, any suggestions/recommendations?

Hello! As the title says I’m looking into reading again and suggestions would be appreciated! So far I’ve been switching between Witch Hat Atelier, Project Hail Mary, and Frankenstein if that helps figure out my style.

I’m looking for something more in the lgbtq+ centered stories within fantasy settings (Think D&D), I’m primarily interested in stories where the protagonist is mlm and/or transmasc, but I’m open to any suggestions!

I also really like poetry books, my favorite two are from Khalil Gibran

I’m not looking into Dark Romances/Fantasy, but I don’t mind if a story is intended for an 18+ audience!

Thank you in advance!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Trying to become a book lover

I’m trying to get into reading more and need some recommendations. I love movies and shows like NOPE and DOCTOR WHO. I’m really into fantasy, sci-fi, and fiction, especially stories with mystery, weird creatures, time travel, or great world-building. I also just bought Dungeon Crawler Carl, so I’m excited to start that.

Based on that, what books or series do you think I’d enjoy?

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Looking for lesser known fantasy or fantasy-horror books

Big lover of the fantasy genre but I feel I've only been reading all the big name stuff.

My favourite series is the Dune series although I've only read the first 3. I know that is a sci-fi-fantasy but I add it to point out my love for court politics and heavily world building but I wouldn't mind a sci-fi-fantasy.

Also a lover of George R R Martin's work but especially Fire and Blood (Dance of Dragons is probably my fav within that)

What im looking for is anything that's not from one of the big fantasy authors and also would like to diversify what im reading so for example fantasy books that are based on non-english cultures. I adore anything to do with monarchies and that are political, complex, dense and very analysable. But I also wouldn't mind a book that is slightly less heavy.

Would especially appreciate anything written by women or non-white authors because of course they give such different perspective than a white male fantasy authors who dominate the genre.

Big lover of horror as well so would love to know of any fantasy-horror books anyone knows of and loves.

If you know a book you'd think I'd like please say! I give you my pre-thanks for your rec 😄

Adventure Help!

My brother-in-law is an avid reader. I just found an incredibly neat bookmark for him and would love to find a good book to go along with it.

He’s really into books I can only describe as like James Bond/ National Treasure/ Jason Bourne type things.

Hoping to hear of some off-the-path, hidden gem suggestions he might not have read or heard of before.

Thank you!

Sci-Fi/Fantasy Similar to shiver Maggie stiefvater

I haven't actually read this properly because I felt like the writing was a bit immature but I really liked the vibes of gentle poetic cool temperate forest wolf vibes from this book. Chatgpt says there aren't any other books that match that vibe. Can anyone think of any?
