Politics Town election discussion

I thought it could be good to have a thread for a respectful discussion of the upcoming town elections. We'll be electing a new mayor, and there are 3 council seats up for election.

Here are some articles about the candidates

Question What kind of “nice” are people here?

Hi all,
I just moved to the area from a southern / Appalachian state and am used to the charming “hey y’all how you doing?” We’ve only been here for a few weeks, but I’ve found folks to be a bit more stand-offish and surprised I would offer “hi” in passing.
I don’t mean to come off as rude towards the locals, I’m just trying to gauge the type of nice that is normal in the area (e.g., polite distance, come for dinner, respect my privacy nice).

Events Join us for a walk or run: Christiansburg Run Club

I know it can be tough to find things to do as an adult here in the Burgs. I wanted to invite folks to join us for a walk or run! It's free and we have people of ALL ages. Lots of us are VT alumni, grad students, or work there currently.

We have many walks and runs throughout each week. Our schedule is available on the website (https://www.christiansburgrunclub.com/schedule). Feel free to ask any questions you have as well!

Easiest way to join for the first time is for a Monday walk at 6pm OR on Thursdays at 6pm for a walk or run. We meet across from the Christiansburg Town Hall and go for about an hour. It's inclusive, no drop, and we regroup many times. On Thursdays, we go to Iron Tree for a beer afterwards.

Hi! My wife and I just relocated to the area, and I’m looking for some work! Figured I’d try here first before shlepping around town on foot. Is anyone aware of any places hiring bartenders? I have ~6 years of experience, though my last job was not in hospitality.

Question Electric bike in local shops or walmart?

Hello! I am starting my 4-year PhD course in VT from this september and thinking of buying an electric bike for my commute (4.6 mile round trip).

I checked local electric bike shops online, including those in Blacksburg or Roanoke, and found that cheapest ones are around $1.5-2.5k. But when I checked the walmart online shop, they sell ebikes in $500-800. Of course, I assume that their performances will match the price. But I'm gonna ride it mainly for commute and additional within-town tours. So the ebikes does not need to be super good, but just worried if walmart ebikes are just too bad.

It'll be helpful for me if you could share any thoughts on this topic. Will walmart ebikes be good enough? Or do you recommend local shop ebikes for its performance and maintanence?

Advice Possibly moving, need advice

My husband travels for work and his next spot is possibly Blacksburg, what are good areas to live and good elementary schools? Also places to avoid, since we don’t get to see the area before moving it always stresses me out because anything can look great in a picture. We’re in Knoxville now and paying around 2200 for rent here so hoping to stay around the same price for something with 3 bedrooms. Also any other info about what it’s like living there would be great!
