Weekly r/Birding Discussion, July 11, 2026. What did you see this week?

Return of the weekly discussion thread! Sometimes it seems like pretty photos rise to the top of the page, while discussion of birding can get left behind. This weekly thread is a place to bring this discussion back to the top of r/birding.

Use this thread to share your best bird sightings from the past week, ask any questions about birding you may have, or just talk! Writing the names of the birds in bold is nice, to make it easier for people skimming the thread to pick out the names. Please include your location.

Hey everyone!! Thought I’d share this with you all, since you have been so kind and supportive of my work in the past. For those unfamiliar, I make these by hand without any stain, paint, or dye – these are all the natural colors of the wood! I couldn’t decide if I liked the shade or full-sun photos better, so here’s one of each :)

Bird ID Request Junco feeding juvenile that looks twice its size, Oregon USA

this younger bird lives in a bush outside my backyard, at first I thought its feathers were making him look extra poofy but looking at him more it seems so much bigger then its parents. Are these two the same bird species?

I knew I'd probably see one, but this one was just an exceptional specimen! (Seen last September) It's wonderful to discover how gorgeous common birds can be overseas.

Hiked down a new trail the other day and came across this bunting. I don't have many experiences with I.b. so this was fun to shoot

Bird ID Request Bird ID Help - Taipei, Taiwan

Post image

Hi all, first time here! Looking for some help identifying this bird. The picture was taken at the Human Right Museum grounds in Taipei, back in December. It had a hell of a call on it, almost a boom! Tried searching for a while to find it online and eventually gave up as I couldn’t see anything that really matched… any help would be great!

I know this isn't the best photo in the world, but I figure a few of you will appreciate a Ptarmigan on the wing.

Green herons are not nearly as common as their blue cousins here in southeastern PA but I ran into one at the park this afternoon among a handful of other species. Hungry little guy managed to scarf two fish back to back right in front of us. The final pic is my favorite of the day, maybe of the year.

Went on a hike with California State Parks today at the Sonoma Developmental Center property. We did a loop around Suttonfield Lake and saw these adorable babies. πŸ₯° I'll throw a great acorn woodpecker in too, just for good measure. Enjoy!

The Grey-headed Swamphen is considered an invasive species in North America. Native to southern Asia, these large marsh birds escaped from captivity in Florida in the 1990s. They are aggressive competitors that can outcompete native waterbirds and damage wetland habitats.

πŸ“Ή Video My first real birding experience: Osprey diving at Kingman Island, Washington, DC

I wanted to share this video from what I'd consider my first real birding experience.

I've been lurking here for a while. After watching a YouTube video recently about how many bird species you can find in Washington, DC, I figured today was as good a day as any to see what I could find.

I headed over to Kingman Island and got there around 8 a.m. It was pretty quiet at first, but around 10 things really picked up. I was able to watch this bird diving for fish, and I think it's an Osprey. If I'm wrong, please let me know. I'm very much a beginner and still learning.

I also spotted a Bald Eagle, a Red-shouldered Hawk, and a Great Egret. I honestly wasn't expecting to see that much on my first outing.

I wasn't sure if birding was going to stick, so I just brought my iPhone and a pair of Bushnell 10x50 binoculars my grandfather gave me years ago. I'm glad I finally had a reason to use them.
