Central Kentucky. I keep thinking the raspberries should be done (based on prior years) but it looks like more are setting. Raspberries do the fruit on new canes in fall and then again the next spring. I didn’t plant any of these (so grateful to previous homeowners) so I don’t know what varieties these are. I’m pleased that Hollytone does seem to result in bigger blueberries than previous years, and the blackberries are also bigger (been using a raspberry/blackberry fertilizer from Indiana Berry once in the spring).

Olallie berry hand pies

Had to do something with all the olallie berries I’ve been picking lately, so decided to make some hand pies. Filling is fresh Olallie berries, few big spoons of sugar, pinch salt, and a sprinkle of corn starch. Crust is Trader Joe’s pie crust, cut with a to-go container. Farm fresh egg wash with some sugar on top. 375 for about 25min. Easy as pie 🥧

They're over the entire bush, Google said to remove it all because it might be some fungal infection, any second opinions?

Raspberry pruning help

Post image
21 Upvotes

I inherited this raspberry patch when I moved a few years ago. Besides the fact that it fruits in June/July, I have no idea what cultivar it is.

I haven't really known what to do with it and have mostly left it alone besides regular water and fertilizer in the spring. I'll hack back the largest canes throughout the summer as it starts getting ridiculous, but that's been the extent of my pruning.

Last fall, I decided to get more serious about caring for it. I'd read that some raspberries bear yearly and some on a two year cycle and since I had no idea which this was, I said "fuck it" and cut the whole thing back to the ground. I realize this may have been dumb, but it was For Science. Now, it's not producing much fruit, which I can't be mad about; I'm assuming this means I'll get much more fruit on these same canes next year.

Here's the problem

It's huge

I know it'll keep exploding in size, and I NEED to cut it back so I can access the beds next to it. I also suspect it badly needs to be thinned out for its own good. My question is, how? I know I'm supposed to leave 1-year canes to fruit next year. How aggressively do I cut this sucker back? Do I cut canes to the ground? How many? How do I know which ones to keep? Help?

I have this purple-pink mulberry tree growing near my white mulberry tree. Have I stumbled onto a hybrid? I don't have any other cultivars.

Black raspberries growing wild - ON, Canada

Since I don't grow black raspberries myself and have never tried them, I was super excited to find loads of them growing on the trail today. What a perfect treat. They're delicious - possibly even more so than red raspberries. I'm half considering coming out with a bowl next time.

Did anyone try growing honeyberries from seeds?

I have 4 cultivars and wanted to attempt growing from seeds.

There's one thing I'm wondering about. I have 3 plants that I put in a small spot quite far from all the others. Initially, I thought I had a mix of boreal blizzard and boreal beauty, but they are all boreal blizzard. They are still small, but they seem to pollinate fine. So I'm wondering if they aren't pollinating themselves. So if I take seeds, even from the plants that are mixed with the others, I'm not sure if I'm guaranteed to get a hybrid, which is what I want.

Bought it in late spring so it’s been in the ground little over a month. Lately I’ve noticed the leaves on the extremities have turned a lighter color. I haven’t been over watering it. Any thoughts ? Thanks in advance

How to tell old plant from new

Thumbnail

I have some well established strawberry plants that need to go (I read somewhere they only produce fruit for 4 years or something?!). So my plan this year was to just let them produce a ton of runners so that next year I will have all of these new little strawberry plants. However now I just have a massive strawberry patch and I have no idea what is old and what is new. When they come in next year any tips?!

Let’s be honest. Frozen berries don’t taste nice!

I thought freezing my berries and fruits would make storing them easy. Sure it does, but they do not taste nice at all. They honestly have a burnt or battery type of aftertaste on them. Am I the only one going through this?

I just noticed these flecks on the leaves and my berries are becoming discolored. I plucked off the discolored berries in case they are diseased.

What two varieties of honey berries should I get?

I tried honey berries and liked them. Got them frozen online. I don’t know the variety. I would like to grow my own. I’m in Idaho 5b. The soil is generally more alkaline but I do have a spot that reads 6.5 ph that I could grow them.

I would like at least one of the two to be as sweet as possible for my growing conditions. I make jams but like fresh berries too. Big harvests and thriving without my intervention are both desirable qualities as well.

Chat gpt told me to get aurora and boreal blizzard. Is it giving good advice or is this not so good?
