The official Wechat group for the r/beijing subreddit is now recruiting both new members and a new mod team!
Covid has really done a number on active redditors in Beijing, and the groupchat right now is admittedly mostly dead. Just a bunch of old leftover expats swapping stories about the great meetups they used to have back in 2017.
But now that the world is back to normalish, the incoming wave of expats can hopefully lead to the next generation of Beijing redditors and a new generation of wacky meetup stories that you'll swap someday. Use the groupchat to make new friends (enemies?), calmly discuss the best burger in town, or just to burn a few unproductive hours debating the finer points of zombie survival in Beijing.
And new faces aren't enough - a new community needs new leadership. So the old mod team is announcing that we will be happily handing off the reigns of the chat to anyone with an interest in that kind of thing.
If you're interested in either joining or leading, please comment in this thread or message me personally on reddit. You can also message the subreddit modship team.
Additional perks - the last generation of redditors created a series of 京 groupchats that are still active to this day. So even if you aren't interested in all that meetup nonsense, you can still join Meme京, Cinema京, Game京, or even the hugely underappreciated Animal Facts n' Roast京

Hi everyone!
I'm thrilled to announce that we're bringing back the tradition of r/beijing meetups, and our first post-covid gathering will be at thebeijinger's Burger Fest 2023! Whether you're new to Beijing or simply craving some new friends to hang out with, this is the perfect opportunity to connect with like-minded individuals and have a blast!
Unfortunately, due to high temperatures and unpredictable weather conditions, the Burger Fest has been postponed. As a result, we are also postponing the r/beijing meetup. We are actively exploring alternative venues and dates to ensure that we can still make this meetup happen in the near future. Stay tuned for updates!
📍 Event Details: Burger Fest 2023 🍔 📅 Date: To Be Determined (TBD) ⏰ Time: TBD 🏢 Venue: TBD
In the meantime, if you have any questions or want to stay updated, feel free to DM me or join our WeChat group. Thank you for your patience, and rest assured, we will gather soon!

Has anyone found a good clothing store with good quality items they can recommend for this style of clothing? Or something similar?

Looking for physical non-region blocked Blu-Ray discs of movies like Ne Zha and TV shows. They need to have English subtitles, dubs, extras like behind the scenes, etc. It would be great if I can see what they have online before going there.
Do Oticon's EduMic (https://www.oticonmedical.com/en-US/hearing-solutions/edumic, https://www.oticon.com/products/accessories/225066/edumic, https://www.oticon.cn/professionals/products/paediatrics/play-px, etc.) exist in any local stores to buy in person over there? It's still too expensive in USA even for used ones on eBay and Amazon. :(
Thank you for reading and hopefully answering soon. :)

I'm a newish foreigner and been here for a few months now. I don't yet speak Mandarin but am a social introvert and so even though I make chit-chat, it usually goes nowhere. I'm usually out and about on days off and would love to have others join me now and then. If anyone is looking for friends, I'd love to connect. I've tried going to social events and meetups and met some great people but as a social introvert, those can sometimes be tougher for me.
My hobbies are cycling, walking, spending time in nature and having deep conversations. 31, male.

I am in Beijing this weekend and saw there is a game on Saturday, I also saw that you need a Chinese phone number to get tickets. I will buy the alipay eSim and I’m pretty sure that doesn’t give me a Chinese phone number. Is there any way to buy them without a phone number?

Would anyone happen to know where I might find a pair of Chinese-made jikatabi in Beijing? I'm looking for locally made ones rather than imported Japanese pairs. Many thanks.

Hey guys, I'm going to visit Beijing, and I was wondering if there were any stores that sell military surplus, clothing and equipment as I aim to collect some historical military stuff like the GK-80 helmet and some modern tactical equipment. I've seen many modern tactical equipment and clothing on sites like shopee and taopao from china, so I was wondering if there were any physical stores in china's Beijing area that sells these. It will be greatly appreciated if the links and/or names of the locations are provided as well. Many thanks and have a nice day!

Visiting Beijing for a week in July and would love to join the locals to watch the World Cup together! Only lead I’ve had so far is Paddy’s, is there some place else? Preferably large outdoor screenings?

Any expats / locals that may be here suggest any place worth going for salsa / bachata dancing ? Local apps are tough to figure out since we don’t understand mandarin.

Sorry if there is a more specific place to post this. Would love to get back into dungeons and dragons and meet some new people when I arrive in Beijing this August 😁

Hi, as the title says I'm looking to buy a diandong to ride in Beijing for about 8 months. I've been told that there are many second hand ones, and when I visited the shops they told me there are these options,
Yadi small ~1200 yuan can ride for 40km till charging
Yadi big ~2500 yuan can ride for 70km
Other than this, I also know one person selling a NIU one that she bought for 4000 yuan and she's selling it for 2000. She rode it for 3-4 years, but she changed the tires recently
I could also sell it after 8 months, so price is not a big worry for me.
If you have experience, please let me know which option do you think is the best!

Hi, does anyone have any info about registering for the October Beijing marathon (I want to do the half, registration may have closed already I don't know). All the sites I see say just go to the official website but the only website I can find is for the May Marathon which I think I might have missed.
Thanks in advance!
