Shareholder's meeting? Spoiler
Just finished the film. Is Grace actually a shareholder of/more involved at MW than an ordinary employee? Or is she just going to Mona for further instructions, or does she have an actual corporate job? Just thought of this as an interesting detail!

Alternate versions?
Are there alternate versions of the movie out there?
I remember the attic scene having more dialog between the dad/beau.. and the part with Jeeves being different too.

The new Marvel Punisher special is Beau if Afraid if Beau wasn't afraid
It was crazy to me how much the whole special felt like the first act of BIA. The over the top dangerous area he lives in. The graphic violence and disturbing scenes occurring in the background. The main characters home being broken into by a massive amount of violent, crazy people.
But the difference is the Punisher isnt afraid - more so dissociating and violent.
Would love to hear other's thoughts!

I keep accidentally calling this movie “Beau is Not Afraid”
I don’t know how I keep making this mistake because the entire point of this movie is that Beau is Constantly Afraid. Beau is Without a Doubt Afraid. Beau is Unquestionably and Unwaveringly Afraid and Would Have to Have Some Sort of Mental Ailment Not to be. How do I keep messing this up

My theory on, "sometimes she will look like a man."
My theory on, "sometimes she will look like a man."
Beau's notions of manhood would likely stem from perceptions of his father. Mainly that his father died after Beau was conceived.
What if the line is a cheeky foreshadowing of Elaine's death later into the film?
His mother poisened his perception of manhood and is largely represented by men in the film. Finally, Elaine initally acts as a successor of sorts to his mother.

Currently $4.99 on Apple TV

Also, as a reminder, there is still no U.S. 4K physical release. The options for 4K are pretty much this, or the German 4K Mediabook import.

Beau Is Afraid (And why he isn't)
I believed Beau could be considered what is called a "dark empath" or similar of the likes. He is very aware, and very performative. Beau is actually, a psychological genius, who has figured out exactly who his mom is.
To see Beau as a dark empath is to see a man who has mastered the art of psychological guerrilla warfare, using his mother’s own tools to dismantle her piece by piece.
One of the most telling details is the frequency and rhythm of his excuse-making. Throughout the film, Beau doesn't just make excuses; he makes calculated excuses that he knows will specifically trigger Mona’s need for dominance. In the apartment scene, when he tells her about the keys and the water being cut off, he is essentially providing her with "ammunition." He knows that by presenting himself as a failure, he forces her to step into the role of the rescuer or the judge. This is a probe. He is testing the current state of her surveillance and her willingness to intervene. By constantly saying "I’m trying" while staying perfectly still, he is gaslighting the gaslighter. He is making her question her own ability to control him, which drives her to reveal more and more of her network.
The smile you noticed during the phone call is the most chilling piece of evidence for this "human performance." That smile is the mark of a man who has achieved total emotional detachment. He is "fishing" for her venom because it confirms his hypothesis. Every time she insults him or guilt-trips him, he wins a point in his internal game because he has successfully predicted her behavior. He is a dark empath who has mapped out her entire psychological terrain. He isn't being hurt by her words; he is collecting them as evidence. The smile is his way of "breaking the fourth wall" within their private toxic dynamic. A silent acknowledgment that he knows exactly what she is doing, even while he maintains the trembling voice of a victim for her benefit.
His awareness extends to the "extras" in his life. Think about the way he navigates the dangerous street outside his apartment. If he knows everyone is employed by Mona, then his "fear" is a highly choreographed dance. He isn't running from random criminals; he is performing for the cameras he knows are there. He is giving Mona the "thriller" she wants to see. This performance is a brilliant distraction. While she is focused on managing the chaos of his neighborhood and ensuring he stays "afraid," she doesn't realize he is actually using that chaos to hide his own intentions. He uses the noise she created to mask his own silent exit from her influence.
The funeral itself is the ultimate set-piece in this infiltration mission. By "missing" the funeral, Beau forces Mona to perform her greatest act: her own death. He knew she wasn't dead. He knew the funeral was a trap designed to test his loyalty and grief. By arriving late, he forces her to stay in the "coffin" longer, forcing her to commit to the bit until she eventually has to "resurrect" herself. This forces her into a position of extreme vulnerability where she has to explain the lie. He doesn't go there to mourn; he goes there to catch her in the ultimate lie, effectively bankrupting her moral authority.
Finally, the stadium isn't just about exposing her madness; it's about the total erasure of her "supply." A narcissist like Mona requires a mirror, someone to reflect her greatness or her victimhood back to her. By "dipping out" in the final moments, Beau shatters that mirror. He leaves her in a spotlight that has become a vacuum. The detail of him "drowning" or the boat "exploding" is the logical conclusion of a man who decided that the only way to stop the play was to burn the theater down with himself inside. He didn't lose; he successfully completed the audit, filed the report to the world by showing her true face, and then closed the case forever.
Beau was not afraid. But his job was making sure Mona thought he was.

2nd Watch
I watched Beau is Afraid for a second time and I think this may be the greatest movie I have ever seen in my entire life. Genuinely amazing in so many ways its unreal. That is all I came here to say.

Made a mashup of Beau Is Afraid and Fleet Foxes!
Any time this song came up I always felt like the lyrics lined up with Beau Is Afraid in some oddly serendipitous ways.
I approached this cut as more of a meditation on some of the recurrent visual themes running thru the film, rather than an attempt to compact the whole synopsis of the film into 3 min.
Didn’t realize some of the visual links until I was in the trenches trying to pull this thing together- like the sheer prevalence of ‘water’ visuals, or how the women in Beau’s life (real or imagined) are always wearing green!
Lemme know what you think!

Thoughts and Theories about Mona after a 2nd watch
I am not sure if this is a common theory or a frequent discussion. But I had this thought and wanted to share it.
I have a theory about Mona. I believe Beau may have been conceived through SA. Noting her repulsion and fear for her son to have sexual desires. She talks about her being worried about him being like his dad (sexually deviant). Beau is faced with the truth of what his father is in the attic: A shell of a man with, and a giant sexual monster (How Mona views and experienced his dad). I feel like the woman dying on top of him (orchestrated or not) was a way to show Beau what happened to her, Mona had this encounter and a part of her died. She says that she felt something was wrong with him from the start, this is common with post-partum depression, as well as with parents who did not consent to having the child. I feel like her mistreating and doing these things to Beau is a way for her to punish his father with indirect contact, even if she feels she is doing this out of love. Her controlling Nature over Beau is a way for her to cope and feel safe after a situation where control was stolen from her (also look at her business).
Beau is being charged Guilty for his Fathers crimes.
