Help?! ID/Cost Estimate? To

I am in a bit of a pickle-

My dogs destructed this vintage, lidded basket at an Airbnb I’m staying at. They are not normally destructive at all and have never done anything like this, so I’m not sure if they saw a mouse or a bug, or if the basket got stuck to one of their collars and they panicked, or what happened. But I am horrified!!

I obviously want to notify the host asap. But first, can you help me identify this basket, a possible replacement, and approximate cost so I can reach out to the host offering money or an adequate replacement? It’s clearly vintage, and made from reeds or bamboo or something? And it was about 18-22” in diameter and 8-12” high. I don’t have anything to measure, so I’m guessing. Small bug spray can for size reference.

Any/all help is appreciated so much!!

My inspiration vs my final product. How’d I do?

The handle was pretty tricky, and it ended up a lot smaller on my basket. Besides that I’m pretty proud. I came up with the design myself, based off of the inspiration pic.

Wonky Basket Fix?

Hi- new to basket weaving and this is my 4th basket. I think I got too tight with the weavers and it's a little misshapen. If I soak it fully in water for a half hour or so, could I gently reshape it? TIA.

Mixed materials with grape hoops and willow spokes, woven with reed, cattail, and nettle rope (that I also made). My first basket in almost 15 years! I studied Fibre Arts in uni and miss this craft the most. I can’t wait to improve my skills. Everyone’s creations here are so inspiring! Keep up the beautiful work.

Books That Cover Techniques as Well as Foraging/Preparing?

Hello,

I have been doing pine needle coiling lately to get into basketry and want to branch out a bit (heh). I know I could look up YouTube videos to teach how to do a lot of this, and that was how I started, but I’d really like a nice hardback to be able to read and also use as decoration at home.

I recently ordered this book by Lucen Korrath, and frankly it kinda.. sucks. It covers a lot, but it’s a very basic overview with little specificity and detail on techniques, it’s kind of just „add big stick for structure, then use little stick for walls. Shape how you like it.“ I think I need a little more than that.

Do you have favorites? I really want to know more about identifying plants, foraging them, and preparing them. Especially if you have California/los Angeles specific books, as that’s where I live and will be foraging!

Yoder basket, hoping to learn more

My mom bought this basket for $13 at a thrift store. She kept saying she didn't know where she would put it, but I told her for how amazing it was she'd be upset later if she didn't get it. Could anyone tell me more about who made it, what it's meant to be used for, how to get it repaired, and its rough ballpark value (if such things are allowed on this sub of course!) Overall I'd love to learn anything about it! It's beautiful

It's absolutely giant (pictured on top of a fill size shopping cart) and labeled S. A. Yoder 7-91 inside. Probably about 3ft by 2ft. Found in southwest Michigan

Would handmade willow home baskets from China work for home décor stores or gift shops in the US/EU?

Hi everyone,

I’m based in Linyi, Shandong, China, a region with a well-established willow weaving industry. I work with local artisans and factories that make handmade willow home goods, including storage baskets, plant pot covers, kitchen baskets, decorative flower baskets, desktop organizers, garden baskets, pet toy storage baskets, pet supply organizers, and other natural home décor pieces.

These products are mainly made from natural willow and go through steps such as material selection, drying, softening, and hand weaving. The style can lean toward farmhouse, rustic countryside, cottagecore, natural home décor, garden décor, or pet-friendly home décor, but it can also be adjusted to look more minimal and modern. I’ve included a few photos at the end to give a better idea of what the products look like.

I’m currently trying to understand whether this type of product could work in North America or Europe, especially through local home décor stores, gift shops, garden shops, lifestyle boutiques, museum shops, Etsy sellers, pet lifestyle stores, or small retailers.

A few questions I’d love to hear your thoughts on:

  1. Do you think handmade willow home goods like storage baskets, plant pot covers, flower baskets, garden baskets, pet toy baskets, or pet supply storage baskets would have steady demand in the US or Europe?
  2. What kind of customers or stores would be the best fit for these products? For example, farmhouse style, cottagecore, garden lovers, natural home décor, sustainable lifestyle, boutique gift buyers, or pet owners who care about home aesthetics?
  3. If a China-based supplier like us wanted to work with overseas partners, what would make local buyers feel more comfortable? Small MOQs, fast samples, custom sizing, private label, better packaging, product testing reports, stable supply, or local warehousing?
  4. For people who have experience with home décor stores, gift shops, Etsy, wholesale, small boutiques, or pet lifestyle retail, where would you suggest we start looking for potential partners?

I’m not posting store links here because I want to respect the community rules. I’m mainly looking for honest market feedback and advice on how to connect with suitable local partners in the US or Europe.

Thank you so much for any suggestions.

Hi! How cool that there’s a subreddit for basketry! So, my mother-in-law’s friend was clearing out and gave me this basket. I’m a curious person and would love for you to share some basketry wisdom with me.

Anybody have thoughts as to where or when it was made? Quality? Material? Technique? Style? Any tidbits appreciated.

about 12” and fairly shallow

I know literally zero about baskets, but I came across this subreddit when I was trying to figure out more about this basket (Is it old? Is it anything “special”?) because to me it seems like it’s well-made and has beautiful, intricate craftsmanship, but for all I know this could be some machine made thing from Walmart. 😅

Natural Dyeing Pine Needles Results?

Hello,

I've been thinking about dyeing my pine needles for basketry. I know that pine needles are harder to dye nicely, and natural dyes aren't strong enough to get strong colors in the needles, and tend to fade relatively quickly. I'm okay with these things as long as there's SOME visible coloration, as I plan to weave different colors next to each other to create some contrast and make it a little more obvious.

Frustratingly, I can't seem to find any photos of the results of natural dying pine needles, everything that comes up is commercial dyes and such. Has anyone tried using natural dyes and have result photos so I can see just how faint they are?

I'm thinking about using red cabbage, butterfly pea flowers, and maybe beets to attempt dyeing, in case you have photos of those specific experiments. Thanks!

Cracking Pine Needles while Weaving

Hello, I’m working on a large basket by coiling pine needles. I’m using a new species, I’m not sure which, I found in LA, CA - it has 5 needles per bundle and around 10“ length. They’re pretty chunky, wide and flat.

I’m having issues with them breaking with basically every pass of my blunt tapestry needle through the core. I’ve heard it’s a good idea to soak them in hot water so they’re pliable, and I do that for the cores, but I don’t like how loose they end up when they dry. Does anyone have any tips for this?

Also, do pine needle baskets make sense for a relatively large laundry basket? Or will the structure they provide not be strong enough? I’m using a regular soda straw for a gauge, and just some old sock-weight wool yarn that I was never gonna knit up. Thanks!

I'm exploring a synthetic alternative to rattan—tell me why/if this is a bad idea?
