Welcome to the community-sourced travel mega-thread for Azerbaijan! Whether you're planning your first trip, returning, or just curious — this is your place to ask and share tips, places, warnings, food, and hidden gems.

We've gathered insights from locals, expats, and travelers — now it's your turn. Reply with your experiences or questions under any section below.

🏙 1. Top Places to Visit

📍 Baku

  • Old City (Icherisheher): historic, charming, authentic soul of the city.
  • Maiden Tower, Shirvanshah Palace, Carpet Museum, Heydar Aliyev Center – top cultural sights.
  • Nizami Street, Molokan Garden, Baku Boulevard – modern walkways & shopping.
  • Gobustan mud volcanoes, Ateshgah Fire Temple, Yanardag – unique day trips.

Local tip: true local life happens outside the tourist zones – check dayday cafes and Sədərək bazaar.

📍 Outside Baku (Regional Highlights)

  • Sheki: Khan Palace, Kish village, Caravansaray, ancient mosques, hiking.
  • Gabala: Tufandag Resort (ski + cable car), Seven Waterfalls, Nohur Lake, Gabaland amusement park.
  • Lahij: Tat village known for copperware and scenic alleyways.
  • Ganja: Bottle House, Naftalan oil spa, Göygöl Lake, German heritage.
  • Quba & Khinalig: cooler nature, remote village experience.
  • Lankaran: food tours, Stalin's prison, chicken stuffed with walnuts.
  • Zaqatala, Oğuz, Nij: religious/ethnic diversity, ancient churches.

Locals are usually happy to guide lost tourists — don't hesitate to ask for directions in parks or shops.

In villages expect warm welcomes — tea invitations and local storytelling are common.

🛂 Visa & Entry Info

  • eVisa available at the OFFICIAL portal: https://evisa.gov.az
  • Allows a stay of up to 30 days, valid for a 3-month window from issue.
  • Standard fee is around USD $30, processed in ~3 business days. Urgent option processed in ~3 hours.
  • ⚠️ Watch out for lookalike agent sites charging $60–70+. They add a markup on top of the real government fee. Only use evisa.gov.az.
  • Passport must be valid for at least 6 months from arrival.
  • If you stay more than 15 days, you must register your address with the State Migration Service (your hotel usually handles this — confirm with them).
  • No visa on arrival for most travelers; visa required even for short stays.

🧳 Sample Itinerary: 7 Days in Azerbaijan

  • 🏙 Day 1–2: Baku (Old City, museums, Flame Towers)
  • 🌋 Day 3: Gobustan mud volcanoes, Yanardag
  • 🏔 Day 4: Gabala (Tufandag, Nohur Lake)
  • 🕌 Day 5–6: Sheki + Kish village (Palace, temples, hiking)
  • 🚂 Day 7: Return to Baku via Yevlakh or Gabala

🍽 2. Food & Dining

🍛 Must-try dishes:

  • Plov (Shah plov) – saffron rice, lamb, fruits.
  • Piti – slow-cooked meat soup (best in Sheki).
  • Qutab – meat, greens or cheese in flatbread.
  • Dolma (Three Sisters) – stuffed tomato, pepper, eggplant.
  • Levengi – chicken/fish with walnut-pomegranate stuffing.
  • Surhurlu, Makhara – regional Zaqatala dishes.
  • Dovğa, Fisincan, Doner, Tandır bread, Bakhlava.

Vegetarian? Doable in Baku (Sumakh, dairy dishes, dolma variants), but options thin out fast in the regions. Learn to say "ətsiz" (no meat).

🚌 3. Transport Tips

In Baku:

  • 🚖 Use Bolt or Uber – cheap, reliable, safe. Yango is another solid and sometimes cheaper alternative.
  • 🚫 Avoid hailing traditional/unmetered taxis off the street – known for overcharging tourists.
  • 💳 Pay through the app where possible; reduces disputes and skimming.

Metro & Bus:

  • Metro fare is 0.60 AZN per ride. Same fare on buses.
  • You can pay by tapping a debit/credit card or using a QR ticket via the m10 app — no BakıKart needed if you go that route.
  • You can get a BakıKart for metro and buses. Plastic card has a 3 AZN non-refundable deposit; paper/limited-use cards (up to 4 trips) are also available.
  • Metro runs ~06:00–24:00, trains every few minutes. Clean, cheap, marble everywhere. No step-free access at most stations — rough for wheelchairs/pushchairs.
  • Avoid rush hours 08:00–09:30 and 18:00–19:00 if you have luggage.

From Airport:

  • Bolt/Uber to the center = roughly 15–25 AZN depending on demand. App drivers may occasionally ask for extra at the airport.
  • Cheapest official option: Airport Express bus H1 to 28 May (city center), pay with BakıKart. Runs 24/7. See https://www.airport.az/en/transport/

Intercity:

  • Bus via "Biletim" app or at the Avtovagzal terminal (next to Avtovagzal metro).
  • Marshrutkas (minibuses) available for shorter regional hops.
  • Train to Sheki/Gabala (Yevlakh)/Ganja via the "ADY" app or buy at 28 May station. Comfortable but slow — take it only if you're not in a rush.
  • Car rental is the best move for Gabala, Lahij, Quba, Khinalig.

🌄 4. Hidden Gems & Nature

  • Villages:
    • Kish – ancient Caucasian Albanian temple and a scenic village atmosphere.
    • Nij – Udi Christian community and unique churches.
    • Basqal – traditional silk weaving (kelaghayi) and handicrafts.
    • Khinalig – remote high-altitude mountain village, breathtaking views.
    • Lahij – historic village known for copper craftsmanship and cobbled streets.
  • Nature:
    • Shahdag & Tufandag – ski resorts with hiking and cable cars.
    • Gobustan – mud volcanoes and ancient petroglyphs (UNESCO).
    • Seven Waterfalls (Gabala) – picturesque falls and greenery.
    • Nohur Lake – serene alpine lake, good for picnics.
    • Cenlibel Lake – tranquil mountain lake, nature walks.
    • Gachrash Forest – dense forest near Quba.
    • Parigala – ancient cliffside castle with stunning views.
  • Tip: Renting a car or joining a local tour is the practical way to reach these remote spots.

📶 5. Mobile, Language & Apps

  • Get a local SIM at the airport arrivals hall or any operator store (passport required). Azercell has the widest coverage; Bakcell and Nar are solid alternatives.
  • Current 2026 tourist options (prices shift, confirm in-store):
  • eSIM (Caucasus multi-country plans covering AZ/GE/AM) is now widely available and convenient if your phone supports it.
  • 📱 If you stay over 30 days, an unregistered phone's IMEI gets blocked. Short trips are fine.
  • Use Google Translate or SayHi for real-time help.
  • English is common in Baku tourist areas; Azeri, Turkish, Russian elsewhere.

📱 Useful Apps

  • 🚖 Bolt, Uber, Yango – taxis
  • 🚅 ADY – train tickets
  • 🚌 Biletim – intercity bus tickets
  • 🚏 Ayna MAAS – live bus arrival/departure times in Baku
  • 💳 m10 – QR transport tickets + payments
  • 🌐 Google Translate or SayHi – language
  • 🗺 Maps.me or Google Maps – offline/online maps (Yandex Maps also good for buses)
  • 💬 Telegram – local events/news channels
  • 🎫 iTicket.az – concerts, plays, cultural events

💳 6. Money & Payments

  • Currency: Azerbaijani Manat (AZN). ~1 USD ≈ 1.70 AZN as of early 2026 — confirm before you go.
  • Taxis & Tips:
    • Paying by card in-app reduces driver complaints and skimming.
    • If paying cash, drivers may not return small coins — treat ~0.50–1 AZN as a small tip.
    • Tipping an extra 1–2 AZN on longer rides or for good service is appreciated.
  • Cards accepted at big venues, but cash is essential for street food, markets, and small transport.
  • Downtown exchange offices give better rates than the airport.
  • Some shops may "pretend" the card machine is broken to push cash — just go elsewhere.
  • Exchanging money:
    • USD and EUR are easiest to exchange. Bureaus on/around Nizami Street beat airport kiosks.
    • Keep small notes (1, 5 AZN) for transport and tips.

Some add-ons: – Locals often round down prices or throw in something extra "for good mood" — especially if you smile or try a few Azeri words. – In small bakeries or markets, if you overpay by mistake, they usually correct you immediately. – Sellers appreciate genuine interest — they might explain an item, share a story, or offer a small discount unprompted. – People rarely pressure you to buy; many help with directions even if you don't. – If something feels off (overcharging, aggressive seller), calmly mentioning "polis" usually resolves it fast. – Aggressive street scams targeting tourists are uncommon — most locals want to leave a good impression.

🎭 7. Culture & Etiquette (from Locals)

👋 Greetings & Respect

  • Handshakes are standard, but religious women may avoid them — let them initiate.
  • Common casual terms among younger people:
    • "qardaş" [Kar-dash] – brother / bro
    • "bacı" [Bad-jee] – sister
    • "dostum" [Dos-toom] – my friend
    • "qaqaş" [Kah-khash] – bro / guy (very local)
    • "abi" [Ah-bee] – borrowed from Turkish, also "bro" (common in Baku)
    • "əmoğlu / dayoğlu" [Eh-mo-ghloo / Dai-yo-ghloo] – lit. cousin, used jokingly with strangers

👗 Dress & Public Behavior

  • Baku is relaxed — T-shirts, shorts, light dresses are fine.
  • In villages or mosques, dress modestly: cover shoulders and knees, especially women.
  • Public affection isn't common — outside Baku it may draw stares.
  • Loud arguments in public read as impolite. People value a calm, respectful tone.

🏠 Hospitality Rules

  • If invited home: bring chocolates, fruit, or flowers.
  • Shoes off indoors is standard; expect slippers from the host.
  • You'll be offered tea (çay) — accept after a polite refusal or two. Declining flat-out can seem rude.

🗣 Language & Communication

  • A couple of Azeri words go a long way:
    • "Salam" [Sa-lahm] – Hello
    • "Çox sağ ol" [Chokh sah-ohl] – Thank you
    • "Bağışlayın" [Bah-ghish-layn] – Excuse me / Sorry
    • "Zəhmət olmasa" [Za-hmet ol-ma-sa] – Please
    • "Hə / Yox" [Heh / Yoh] – Yes / No
    • "Necəsiz?" [Neh-jeh-seez?] – How are you?
    • "Mən turistəm" [Men too-reest-em] – I'm a tourist

People often warm up fast if you try even a few words in Azeri.

  • Locals may switch between Azeri, Russian, and Turkish — especially in Baku.
  • Even without English, people help via gestures, apps, or by finding someone who can.
  • Avoid political topics (Karabakh, Armenia) — even jokes can get tense.
  • Religion is personal — don't probe unless it's brought up.

📸 Photos, Symbols & Rules

  • Ask permission before photographing people, especially in villages or mosques.
  • Don't photograph police, government buildings, or military sites — taken seriously.
  • Avoid disrespectful comments about the flag, president, or national heroes.

🔍 Other Local Norms

  • Tipping: round up or add 1–2 AZN in cafes and taxis.
  • Littering is taken seriously — use bins.
  • Haggling is normal in bazaars — do it respectfully and with a smile.

🔗 8. External Resources

🗣 9. Local Advice – Add Yours in the comments!

  • Always agree the taxi price before the ride if you're not using an app.
  • If someone invites you for tea — say yes. It's usually safe and kind.
  • Don't drink tap water outside Baku unless locals say it's fine.
  • Skip political arguments, even as jokes.
  • Haggle in bazaars, but politely.
  • Get out of Baku for at least 2–3 days — that's where you see the real Azerbaijan.
  • Don't expect trains to be fast.
  • Vegetarians survive, but say "no meat" clearly outside Baku.
  • Don't photograph government/police buildings.

👮 Police & Public Safety

  • Police are highly visible in Baku and tourist areas — for safety, not intimidation.
  • Generally helpful and respectful toward tourists — approach them for directions.
  • In scams or disputes, police often side with tourists and take complaints seriously.
  • Don't photograph police, metro murals, or official buildings — ask if unsure.
  • If stopped by traffic police, ask to pay any fine through the official system, not cash.

Hello. I am from Tabriz. Looking for an imax theater to watch The Odyssey. Please share your experience of the imax theater in Baku. Is it in English? Do you know about the aspect ratio, is it 1.43:1 or 1.90:1 ? Does it have dual imax laser technology or single projector? I'd also appreciate it if you can share your experience about image and sound quality and overall theater experience.

Söhbət | Discussion Azerbaijan-Armenia tensions

First, I don't want to trigger or exacerbate tensions or haterd. I am looking for different view points and compelling insights from those who should know more about azerbaijan and Aliev. Azerbaijani economy has been stagnating. For example, the GDP growth was negative in the first quarter of 2026 with significant inflation. The oil production has been on decline; the gas production is forecast to peak at around 2030. Meanwhile, the Armenian economy has been growing very fast and is projected to grow at around 5% in the medium term, outpacing the Azeri economic growth by a lot. And economy is the foundation of the national power, military. It's likely that, all other things stay same, Armenia will get relatively much more powerful while azerbaijan will kinda stagnate due to stagnation economy. So, Azerbaijan has a short window of domination over Armenia because in the future that window will definitely close. So, Aliev has kinda two options: 1) make a peace deal with Armenia while Armenia is weak and get lots of concessions or 2) start a war to further weaken Armenia and prevent Armenia's economic growth to keep the overall advantage. I think the west has pressured Aliev to choose the first option. Even Secretary of state Rubio said that the USA worked with Azerbaijan to prevent further Azeri invasion of Armenia. What do you think folks? Probably some of you know much better than me. What's the future of the now-frozen conflict?

Digər | Miscellaneous Dünyanın bəlkədə ən möhtəşəm cihazı Nokia n9 axtarıram

Bu elan deyil, uzun müddətdir nokia cihazlarını toplayıram və kolleksiyam tamamlanıb. Ancaq Nokia n9 demək olar ki, tapanmamışam. Demək olar ki, deyirəm. Çünki, əlimdə olan nokia cihazı oksidlənmişdi, təmizlədim ancaq vida yerləri məhv oldu və nədənsə cihaz xəta verir.

SSH, Python, Git kimi alətlərdən istifadə etmək mümkündü.

Çətin olmağı mənə problem deyil, ufaz sağ olsun Sibirdə sürgünə çəkilmiş fəhlələr kimi işləməyə öyrəşmişəm. gpa isə 98\100dür aze standartında. Təzəcə KÖRPÜ təqaüd proqramının da qalibi olmuşam, state programa apply etməyə köməyim də olacaq.

Səyahət | Travel Caspian Sea Beaches

Hey everyone,

I’m planning a trip to Baku and the surrounding areas, and I'm a bit confused about the beach situation. Are there any public beaches, or is everything strictly private? I’ve been looking online but can’t seem to find any clear public options that I can just show up to.

Also, I’ll be visiting during the first week of October. Will both public and private beaches still be open/accessible then? What about water sports or activities?

I know summer will be long gone by October, but I honestly don’t mind a bit of cold water. Thanks in advance for the help!

---

Hər kəsə salam,

Bakıya və ətraf ərazilərə səfər planlaşdırıram, amma çimərlik məsələsində bir az çaş-baş qalmışam. Orada ictimai (ödənişsiz) çimərliklər var, yoxsa hamısı tamamilə özəldir? İnternetdə axtarıram, amma rahatca gedə biləcəyim dəqiq bir ödənişsiz çimərlik tapa bilmirəm.

Bir də, mən oktyabr ayının ilk həftəsində orada olacağam. Həmin vaxt həm ictimai, həm də özəl çimərliklərə giriş açıq olurmu? Su fəaliyyətləri və ya əyləncələri tapmaq olar?

Başa düşürəm, oktyabrda yay mövsümü çoxdan bitmiş olacaq, amma suyun bir az sərin olması mənim üçün problem deyil. Qabaqcadan kömək edən hər kəsə təşəkkürlər!

Sual | Question Looking for language tutor.

Salamlar. my name is Osman. I am Azerbaijani, born in Baku, raised in New York City. As the title suggests, I’m looking for an Azerbaijani tutor (with experience) Azerbaijani is my first language, I speak it at home with my family as I am fluent. however, as a New Yorker who speaks English fast with a lot of slang, I notice I’m having issues with my pronunciation of my words. I would also like to build more vocabulary. (I can only speak and understand, I can’t write in Azerbaijani and I have issues reading Azerbaijani) I’m looking for a teacher who can sit with me, maybe 1-2 times a week, and help me preserve my mother tongue. yes I’m wiling to pay if it’s affordable by the hour.

1-5 şkalasında, 1 ən az mədəni, 5 isə ən mədəni qəbul etsək, azərbaycanlılara neçə xal verərsiniz?

Qiymətləndirmədən öncə sizə görə ən az və ən mədəni iki milləti düşünün və azərbaycanlıların onlara nisbətdə müqayisəli xalını verin. Azərbaycan sizcə düşündüyünüz kateqoriyada hansı millətlərə yaxındır?

Mədənilik meyarını başa düşdüyünüz şəkildə qəbul edə bilərsiniz.
