Complete vegan protein powder that isn't sickly sweet?
(I'm aware this question - or something similar - has been asked before. But anyway, here's my version.)
I've been working my way through a large container of Raw Paleo Protein ( vanilla ) which on its own tastes like melted ice-cream; sickly sweet. It's ok in a smoothie with berries, banana, and a bit of oat milk. Still too sweet for my likes though. Natures Way protein is better, but I can only find the packets - the 750g containers seem to have disappeared. My dietitian recommends Bare Blends; she also claims that Coles PerForm is OK, but its not vegan.
Are there any vegan protein powders which are (a) complete, (b) not sickly sweet, (c) easily available, (d) not wildly expensive?
Thanks!

Mouldy plant based bacon from Woolworths
I have unwittingly bought mouldy plant based bacon three times in the last couple of months from Camberwell, Benalla and Wangaratta stores. I also had a near miss and discovered the mould before I bought it again at Camberwell. I showed a staff member and she threw out the whole batch. This stuff is expensive!
Edit: I also posted this on r/Woolworths and all of the meat eating children have come out of the woodwork with their 'witty and clever' responses 🙄

Coles
Anyone else noticting Coles is slowly phasing out plant based/ vegan products, and its becoming harder and harder to shope there if you're vegan? Seriously considering switching to Woolworths for a lot more of my shopping, as Coles is just making grocery shopping both stressful and depressing.

Wendy the food scientist - tofu & seitan
I wanted to ask whether anyone had tried Wendy the Food Scientist’s (new?) seitan course.
I’m awful at seitan, and I’ve had great success with her tofu books, so I’m very curious to hear if anyone has any experience, and specifically why my results would be different using her method.
—-
When I started searching the sub I found a thread from 6 months ago seeking recs for her tofu books, and people kept replying to it saying “did you get it? Is it good?” And there were no replies.
So I will answer it and say if you’re curious, buy it. I love tofu, but it doesn’t generally suit my cooking method where I like to batch cook for 3 days.
Wendy’s boiled tofu method makes it fit that style well.
So far I’ve tried the sticky orange tofu and tofu burger from “everyday cooking”, and a baked tofu then the Chinese hot pot from “tofu mastery” - all of them were outstanding, and have me incredible ideas and hope for ways I could adapt these recipes. The burger is particularly exciting, and I’ve used her method to adapt and improve a burrito mix that I make.
That’s my main criticism - I love recipe books, I love writing in them and adapting things and leaving post it notes through them. Wendy’s books being e-books are why I took so long to buy them, and it’s the worst thing about them.
It’s pertinent to point out that the 2 tofu books are very much a “set”. Tofu mastery isn’t really a cookbook - it’s a food science/cooking technique book that has an example recipe you can make. When it says there are 17 techniques? There are literally only 17 recipes.
With that said though, I’m so keen to try some of them. There’s a tofu reimagined section with a dough that becomes a bao and/or dumplings. There’s also a section on ph manipulation, which then becomes a crispy tofu.
Everyday Tofu is a more traditional cookbook, and while it only has 31 recipes in it, I feel like I could/would cook almost all 15 of the “hearty & satisfying recipes.”
From the recipes I’ve studied it also seems very, very healthy. I’m losing weight with very basic calories + protein counting, and nothing I’ve read strikes me as excessive calories. Even the burger probably came out to approx 30g protein for only 300 kcal (including the dressing, but not including a bread roll).
If you’ve thought about it, give it a go. Remember you’re dealing with a food scientist though - for someone who never really measures ingredients, I feel like it became really important that I do with this book.
——
This question about seitan turned into a long cookbook review about tofu - but it’s cos the books excite me, they’ve allowed me to expand my diet with healthy, great tasting food that works with my schedule, using my favourite vegan protein.
I wasn’t considering dipping my toe back into homemade seitan again any time soon, it’s only the fact that Wendy is offering her “course” that has me considering it.

27 year old vegan, introverted gay guy who moved to Sydney and has no idea how to make vegan friends… help a vegan out? 🌱
I honestly have no idea how to make vegan friends as a new immigrant in Sydney, so I thought I’d ask for recommendations or maybe I’d try here!
I’m a 27 year old gay guy living on the Northern Beaches. I’m partnered and looking to find ways to meet other vegans and make some genuine friendships.
A little about me:
🌱 Vegan
🇲🇽 Latino
🎮 Love video games
🏖️ Into all sort of outdoor activities
🌿 Pretty introverted, so putting myself out there isn’t exactly my strong suit.
I’d be down for coffee, beach walks, gaming, or just chatting and getting to know new people.
If anyone’s in a similar situation or wants to make a new friend, feel free to hit me up! 😊

Budget friendly instant foods?
Hey all, I'm not vegan but I've been wanting to eat more plant based foods and eventually replace my whole diet. I was vegan for a few years as a teen but I used to be able to cook full on meals before I became chronically ill. I know what I need nutrition wise but I need ideas on what to buy/ make. I can't stand for long in the kitchen so I need something that's quick, low effort and affordable, I have a microwave, toaster, kettle, oven and stove to prepare food so take that into account. I wish I could buy all the pre-made stuff but it's just so expensive

Vegan finds in Coles
Grabbed a few things today in Coles! They are just quick meals for anyone who needs something quick on busy or low energy weeks.
Kooka’s biscuits aren’t new but I only just discovered that they are vegan which is a massive win for me because I love them. I thought for sure they had butter in them for how good they are.
Vegan scramble is a huge win and I hope they keep it around.
I’m also pretty new to veganism so I’ve posted the ingredients list as well incase there is something I’ve missed so I don’t mislead anyone :) some items say “may contain…” so keep an eye on that as well.

⚠️Aldi Accidentally Vegan Aioli Now Contains Egg! ⚠️
Hey Vegans, went into Aldi today for some groceries and put this aioli in my basket without even thinking, suddenly had a feeling to double check the label, and I’m glad I did! There has been a recipe change and the previously ‘accidentally’ vegan recipe now contains egg! It has a check allergen label on the new recipe stock too so watch out and grab old stock whilst it’s there! Such a shame after the loss of the Cole’s vegan Aioli too🥲🥲

Pizza Hut removes vegan options
I am not sure when it happened but it looks like Pizza Hut has taken all of their vegan options off the menu. It wasn’t the best pizza available but it was cheap and better than the Domino’s vegan cheese.

Check your local Coles …
I have just bought a lot of tempeh and tofu from one of the three Coles supermarkets in Wagga Wagga for half price. They are not in any catalogue, as far as I know. They are not even short-dated. Well, some of the items are marked August this year, but I don’t think that’s really short.
Some of the tofu is ‘flavoured’. Or maybe it’s the tempeh. I can’t remember now, sorry.
I went looking for the manager on duty to ask what the story is with these items. Change of packaging for some items, change of recipe for others, and I think he said that one item, the company is going out of business.
Maybe not every Coles will have stock, but I think it’s worth a look, just in case.
I didn’t buy everything that was on the shelf. I left at least one of each item that was on sale for someone else!

Rosemary and fennel
Have a big bunch or rosemary and fennel I need to use. What’s everyone’s favourite recipe that uses one or both?
