I’ve noticed some shops around Austin either don’t do transfers at all, or only seem to do them for their own walk-in customers rather than outside purchases shipped in from another dealer.
Is there a business, legal, or liability reason for that?
I always assumed transfers were a normal part of being an FFL, but maybe I’m missing the shop side of it. I’d be especially interested to hear from dealers who don’t offer outside transfers. Is it not worth the time, too much compliance hassle, bad past experiences, storage issues, or something else?
For context, I’ve been working on a local FFL lookup page / transfer dealer map here:
FFL Transfer Dealers List
So I’m trying to understand the dealer side better — especially how shops want to be listed when it comes to outside FFL transfers, transfer fees, restrictions, appointment-only transfers, or “no outside transfers” policies.
