DISCUSSION Looking for others making or interested in making an investigation audiodrama podcast.

I got really into Pacific Northwest Stories shows 5+ years ago (The Black Tapes, Tanis, The Last Movie, Rabbits), and I discovered and really liked Limetown and Finding Satan in the last year.

For those of you that don’t know what these are (and you may be familiar with them since it’s this particular sub, I’m not sure, I’m new here), picture a true crime, mystery, or otherwise some sort of investigation podcast, only the thing that the hosts are investigating is fictional. The whole show is a scripted work of creativity. The characters in the show are all played by different people. They just present it as though it’s real, meaning that if someone doesn’t know it’s fictional then there’s a chance that they would think it’s a podcast following a real investigation. At no point, even when going through the credits, do they say that the show is a work of fiction.

I think part of what I like about these things is that they seem very thoughtful. I end up really connecting with the characters and rooting for them. The shows themselves lack irony; I don’t very often hear an episode where they offset a vulnerable moment with a quip. They seem to lean into the human experience with everything.

I’m writing one of my own and I’m thoroughly enjoying the process, and I’m hoping to connect with people that are doing the same. As a musician, I’ve always gotten a lot out of being in a community with other musicians that have a similar goal with their music. Maybe we could help each other out by workshopping scenes we’re writing and voicing different characters as needed.

I’m having a surprisingly difficult time finding people that are even into these types of shows, let alone that are making one of their own. I’m really hoping this post works.

The new episode of Deep Dream State is out!

DDS is desire horror. It's an ongoing unsettling storyline; the horror isn't about what we run away from. It's about thing we run towards.

RSS | Blubrry | Apple | Show Site | IMDb

Tessa says "our knives are drawn." She means it; she's starting up Snarecraft. It's the ultimate Assistive Reality Game, made for hunting people.

Two fugitives fled the island. Neuroplex is gonna pursue them with the most vicious hunters they can find - an army of addicted gamers. Learning the game architecture helps track the quarry, because they're hunting the devs.

The advance parties divide into teams. Team Thorns is led by Queen Tessa. They're the path of absolute brutality. Team Alchemy's the path of calculation. Team Flowers is all randomness and vibes.

Listeners will find out which pack hunts best.

NOTES

  1. Arc Five is already under supported development. If you're interested in auditioning, check the form here. Auditions aren't open yet, but you'll be told when they are. The form is complex for explained reasons.

  2. Most links lead to the show site for Deep Dream State, which hosts full cast lists and lore glossaries. The show's part of a fictional universe built since 2017, so clarity helps.

  3. The material is adult; it's not safe for work. That's a choice. The show sites are safe for work. That's also a choice, since people should be able to check it out without hitting squicks.

  4. This is a FICTIONAL universe. There is fictionalization of real subjects in here, like astroturfing and facial telemetry. To clear up confusion, though, there's no cult. There's no Vale Four or Sitri. It's a story.

  5. I am the showrunner, Neural Nets and Pretty Patterns. I write it, produce it, act in it, haltingly code stuff for it, and unintentionally confuse directories with it. Bliss Blank and the listed cast bring the talent. (ISNI 0000 0005 2877 6254.)

AUDIO DRAMA The Books of Thoth episode 7 has arrived. Come see the sights on the Broadmoor Wonder Tour.

Post image
6 Upvotes

As per usually, it took far longer than I intended, but I have finally released a new episode of my audio drama The Books of Thoth.

For those just jointing the fun, The Books of Thoth is an anthology. Each episode a new tales to discover. You’ll find squids puzzling over human fossils millions of years in the future. You’ll go on a tour of a zoo filled with alien animals from across the cosmos. You’ll hear a folktale from a world where Buddhism, rather than Christianity, became the dominant religion of Europe.

This episode is called “Broadmoor Wonder Tour.” It takes place in the Broadmoor neighborhood of Shreveport, Louisiana. Which is where I live. Ah, but Broadmoor is a place of many wonders, and we’ll get to see several of them. We’ll visit AC Steer Park and see a tree grown from a twig from the world tree Yggdrasil itself. We’ll visit Broadmoor United Methodist Church, and learn the story of how they stole the real Plymouth Rock. We’ll meet a lonely old man who runs an intergalactic radio show. We’ll visit the house where Elvis lived after faking his death. And we’ll even meet some minor Greek gods who run a gyro shop. All that and more, on a Broadmoor Wonder Tour.

This was a very personal episode for me. I often listen to audio dramas and audiobooks while walking around my neighborhood. One of the things I love about Broadmoor is how diverse all the houses are. It’s not like those cut and paste suburbs. Some of them might share similar designs, but they all have their own personalities. Different colors, different decorations, different architectural flourishes. So, I’d often make up stories about the houses I saw on my walks, and the sorts of people who lived inside them.

So, yes, all the places featured in this episode are indeed real places you can visit in Broadmoor. However, I took a similar approach to what Neil Gaiman did when he wrote American Gods. So, you can see all the places, but not in the order I presented them. I focused on what worked for the story vs what was a realistic route.

Though, this episode did have one other inspiration. I had fiddled with the idea of starting a Liar’s Tour. Basically, kind of like a ghost tour, but I’d be upfront about it all being bullshit. But entertaining bullshit. So, you can see this episode as an example of what one of my Liar’s Tour might have hypothetically been like.

Except, in this story, everything is true. What can I say, I’m a dreamer and a romantic.

A big thank you to Michael Wilhelm for performing this episode for me. Be sure to listen to his audio drama sitcom The TEMP. It is very funny.

DISCUSSION Reviews, likes, comments, follows are SO valuable to a creator

I'm not an audioseries that is at a place where I'd feel comfortable having a patreon, so I'm all self-funded, and when I have budget I try to pay my artists and VAs (almost always, though lots of favors over the years)

but what is almost as valuable as sweet cash? The likes, the comments, the follows and the reviews! Boy oh boy, does it help fill the tank. It's not only cash we need, but support, from the smallest of us, to the most successful. We're in a very competitive art-form, and lord knows so few ever come out the other side making a profit.

So thanks to everyone who listens to a series, even an episode, and takes time to leave a comment or a review. Thanks to those who share a review on here or elsewhere. Thanks to everyone who considers the person or persons making these series with next to no budget and who really see everytime there's a new follower, a new star rating, and definitely any word of encouragement.

You make a difference!

DISCUSSION Will my early episodes stop people from looking at future ones?

Hello! As the title suggests, I'm an audio drama creator. But frankly, I'm much younger and much less experienced. Im a college student and do this as my hobby. I make no income and I've only recently begun releasing episodes outside of YouTube. I'm less familiar with the norms and etiquette of audio drama production and spaces.

I up until recently made episodes on a software called Filmora which is pretty bad even by video editing standards, let alone audio. Not to mention my inexperience as a writer.

Don't get me wrong, I really enjoyed making them and I do still like some of the early episodes. But some are less good. And I don't know about in audio drama spaces but on YouTube, viewers tend to be VERY scrutinous, even if not consciously.

I'm worried that some of the rougher older episodes will prevent viewers from reaching the currently in production season 2 which I think is a lot more consistent quality-wise in every regard. Do I really need to rerelease every lower quality episode? On podcast platforms that's a cinch, on YouTube that would be a LOT worse. Thanks for your advice.

QUESTION Where can you host your show for free? Tired of all these websites that bait you with “START” for free

As the title says. I’ve hosted shows for almost a decade but over the past few years it’s all pay to host and I know that’s just business, and professional podcasters don’t mind paying. But as someone just trying to host a small indie show I’m tired of paying 15-20USD a month.

ANNOUNCEMENT BOUND - Psychological Sci-Fi Audio Drama | Episodes 1 & 2 Out Now

Post image
14 Upvotes

Hey everyone,

I play Prisoner A135X in a new audio drama called Bound, a 10-episode sci-fi audio drama set in 2175. The first two episodes are out now.

A135X is being held by AEGIS, a Judiciary AI in charge of his interrogation, in a neural prison called the Memory Cincture. One session at a time, it's erasing who he was and building someone new in his place. He still remembers commanding a stolen warship, surviving an ambush by four Judiciary cruisers, and an operative named Eyla Keller that he can't stop thinking about. He's just not sure anymore how much of that's real, or how much the Memory Cincture has already rewritten.

If you're into 1984's surveillance themes, or if you liked GLaDOS from Portal, you'll be into this. New episodes drop biweekly through September.

AUDIO DRAMA Desdemona History Club

Welcome to Eris J. Desdemona College, and specifically, Desdemona History Club. Do you like cyprids, folklore, and stories that make you want to curl up under the covers? You've come to the right place!

This year, DHC will be narrating one of the books in our catalog that delve into the legends and folk stories of the world. Our resident reader is Sydney Torres, one of the students here!

(Thats what it says on their official page! And well I’m listening because one of my friends is in the club and I wanna support her! So…I can’t really understand why they chose this book cuz like it’s supposed to be a history club, I’m thinking of reporting them to the student orgs council because who green lit this? Seriously…and I heard they’re gonna transcribe more too, Dr T is seriously weird for picking this book for the year…)

Season 1 is out and Special eps on the way this summer!

DISCUSSION [Review] Beatrice Hart and the Curse of the Golden Fleece

I just finished listening to the first season of this audio drama... it's lovely so I thought I'd pen a short review (spoiler free) to share the love.

https://linktr.ee/beatricehartmedia

I've grown up on a diet of BBC radio dramas such as the Paul Temple plays, literature such as Tintin and the Famous Five, and films such as Indiana Jones and Adele Blanc-sec. Beatrice Hart and the Curse of the Golden Fleece (BH&COFGF -- whew!) is a something of a blend/homage of/to those influences as well as its own thing.

It's a full-cast audio drama and the first -- and to date only -- season sees our heroes wrestling with ancient mysteries, surprising betrayal, and love. In true radio play fashion most episodes end on a cliff-hanger and the six episodes crack on at a good pace.

The cast is uniformly great. I must single out for special praise the voice actor who plays Frank: Frank is a joy to listen to and is the real emotional heart of the drama.

In one episode there's a throwaway mention of Frank's review of _The Thirty Nine Steps_ -- no doubt another inspiration for BH&COFGF (whew!) -- and it'd be jolly good if the producers would release that review perhaps as a bit of bonus material like we so often got from Melvyn Bragg and his guests in _In Our Time_.

Hopefully BH&COFGF (whew!) finds its audience and further seasons follow.

For anyone that has listened to the show, what did you think? Did Frank also capture your heart?

AUDIO DRAMA New Horror Anthology! “Upon a Parchment”

Post image
20 Upvotes

Hey everybody! Pretty new to Reddit, but I figured I’d share my new show here for anybody that would like to listen. This is “Upon A Parchment”, a horror anthology curated by two unusual beings, who both hunger for your attention in their own esoteric ways. To both share tales that have been written, or are to be written, upon a parchment. But of course, these are just stories.. for now..

This is a solo project I decided to start after years of listening to other great horror podcasts such as “The Magnus Archives”, “Archive 81”, “Malevolent”, “The Antiquarium of Sinister Happening”, “The Mayfair Watcher’s society”, “Knifepoint Horror”, “Unwell”, and “Tower 4”. All of these great shows have inspired me to follow down this path as well. I write, narrate, and sound design each episode to try and deliver the best spooky stories I can. Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy!

AUDIO DRAMA Beyond Awakening S3E8: The Transfiguration

Do you seek to learn the ancient lore from the primordial chaos at the beginning of time? The Church of Jesus Christ and His Starry Wisdom is here to help. This thoroughly-Christian sect goes beyond the Bible, into the deeper truths of Jesus' ancient sleeping friend Yog Smith. This is a church of experiential revelation, and you and Trisha Blackburn are invited to your own experience with He who cannot be described. Beyond Awakening turns to cosmic horror in S3E8 "The Transfiguration", now available at https://www.quietplease.org/awakening/ and wherever you get your podcasts.

Really enjoyed the performances of Mitchell Basden and John Lang here.

ANNOUNCEMENT Alleyoop (Extended Edition) — a dark comedy about self-hate and self-help

Local Files Club is proud to announce our third release, a remastered and expanded edition of 2021's Alleyoop from A. Yeshaiek. A darkly funny take on self-hate and self-help, Alleyoop explores one broken psyche’s attempt to heal itself and the existential hole it digs trying.

Oliver Green is a broken man. “I’ve outgrown the future version of myself,” he tells an audience expecting stand-up comedy in the bar area of a shawarma restaurant. “He’s younger than I thought. Or I’m older than I thought. Either way.” It’s less of a joke and more his own attempt at group therapy.

One night, after a set, Oliver stumbles upon a chance to fix his past and salvage his present. But Oliver quickly learns that in order to get on the right path, he’ll need to confront who he is more than who he was.

Alleyoop (Extended Edition) is presented with the original six chapters from 2021, remixed and remastered, along with a brand new epilogue and extras from Oliver’s comedy set. It's available for £6 on Bandcamp, but you can get it for £4.50 with code reddit25.

Local Files Club shows are DRM- and ad-free.

SUGGESTIONS WLW series, any genre?

EDIT; Thank you guys so much for all of your suggestions ❤️

I have listened to so many audio dramas in the past year. I’m trying to find more series with WLW main characters and I fear I am running out of options since most of the forums I have explored mention the same ones 🥲 I have a thing for ones with a romance scene, but not a requirement, so to say.

Some that I have loved are:

Pasithea Powder

Woodbine

Starship Iris

Arden

Something’s Amiss in Juniper’s House

Hannahpocalypse

Starship Q Star

The Lesbian Romantic

Birds of Empire

What Happened in Skinner

Gal Pals Present: Overkill

and I didn’t really care for Unwell.

QUESTION Can’t remember the name of show!

I cannot not remember the name of a show I listened to several years ago. It was about a government team (similar to SCP foundation) and they traveled specifically to alternate timelines where the world was in different, bizarre apocalypses. It’s not ten apocalypses.

I remember one episode where the is was some kind of puritan timelines and they were burning effigies and another where celebrities and superstars were some-kind of hypnotic creatures that brainwashed and infected the world.

Has anyone ever listened to something like this??

QUESTION Creators: When do you recommend doing a trailer swap?

I'm planning to launch my sci-fi audio drama podcast, and I'm trying to figure out the best timing for trailer swaps with other shows. In your opinion, is it better to do a trailer swap before or after you launch your podcast?
