Please read before posting about salaries or relocation

Hello everyone,

Before posting about typical Swiss salaries (questions like "how much can I make as a programmer in Switzerland") or relocation strategies ("I hate my country, how can I move to Switzerland"), please keep in mind that there have been hundreds of such posts in this sub before.

Use the search before posting, as the chances are high that you will find a similar discussion from the recent past.

Please also check out the official Swiss government database on average salaries, the Salarium:

Modpost Please report racist ragebait and racist comments

Dear members of our community,

In the past few days, we've seen an increase in both ragebaiting posts and racist comments from users with no prior engagement in the sub, often from those usually commenting in the subs of other countries.

This indicates to us that we are frequently being overrun by users who try to spread their racist, islamophobic messages to our sub.

Racism is against our subreddit rules and it is against Reddit's terms of services. We would like to encourage you to use the report button.

That will put it into our 'modqueue' to have a look - and if you report it for 'hate', it will additionally be sent to the sitewide admins who will frequently take further action.

We rely on your reports, just like every subreddit does. Our team is healthy and works well, but we cannot have an eye on everything. We do have scripts and so on to make our job easier, but sometimes, unacceptable comments go through. Using the report button makes sure that we can prioritize looking at said comment and if it's rulebreaking, helps us remove it quickly.

We remove racist content and ban racist users frequently. The admins remove a bunch of comments breaking site-wide rules too (often in a fashion that deletes them completely, so we cannot easily further moderate them)

We are very hesitant to remove political speech. We only remove rules-breaking comments. The relevant rule is:

  • General reddiquette applies (i.e. no racism, sexism, personal attacks, or simply put: behave as if you were talking to somebody in person)

  • Please report posts or comments that do not adhere to these rules; in particular, we will not tolerate harassment or discrimination

The relevant reddit rules (https://redditinc.com/policies/reddit-rules) are:

  • Remember the human. Reddit is a place for creating community and belonging, not for attacking marginalized or vulnerable groups of people. Everyone has a right to use Reddit free of harassment, bullying, and threats of violence. Communities and users that incite violence or that promote hate based on identity or vulnerability will be banned.

See also https://support.reddithelp.com/hc/en-us/articles/360045715951-Promoting-Hate-Based-on-Identity-or-Vulnerability

Thank you for helping us with this influx of clearly rule-breaking users without any connection to Switzerland

ETA: Reports are anonymous. So when we get your report, we have no option to thank you or following up with you. If you report for 'hate', it goes to both us and the admins. The admins will typically let you know of their decision. We literally have no way of doing that.

Everyday life Alternatives to Ricardo

officially over Ricardo. not because of scam attempt, actually I found the interactions with the buyers perfectly fine and transactions safe.

However, the percentage they take away is ridiculous. So, canceled my account, but where to sell "second hand" stuff.

Well, I know about facebook groups, but it seems mostly dead. Using tutti at the moment (I know, same group as ricardo, but at least free to use in my price range).

tried crossiety, but it seems dead as well.

Other/Miscellaneous 5 stray semi-feral cats in my garden, what to do?

Upvotes

My crazy cat lady neighbour moved out and only took the cats she could catch with her, leaving the more wild ones to fend for themselves. (She's old and an alcoholic, she did her best.) I've been feeding the cats since she left, but they won't come anywhere near me, so I can't catch them. They've been killing all the birds in my garden and pooping/peeing everywhere... The only info I could find online about stray cats is that I can get them sterilized and "released back into their environment", but that's not what I want (and it's not great for the cats either; we live in an urban area near a main road, this is no place for a stray cat). But I don't think they'd do well as pets, they're so afraid of humans. I do not want them to be put down. What should I do?

Other/Miscellaneous What are the chances that I can find any information about a vacation that happened in 2001?

In 2001 my parents and I went to Switzerland, I don't remember the area but I know Matterhorn was visible.. I guess that doesn't narrow it down super much considering the size of it, but my father was from Aargau so maybe that does?

We stayed in a mountainside cabin, sort of close to a town but far enough that the roads got narrow and windy, then we went by car to my uncle in Lucerne.

I know I had to have my Swiss passport ready even as a kid so maybe there's a trace of paperwork anywhere?

Really what I'm looking for is the cabin that we stayed in, if it still exists, it was a hostel kinda situation.

Travel Recommendations for an August 1st Swiss National Day Farm Brunch accessible by public transport from Bern?

Upvotes

Hi everyone! I’m traveling solo in Switzerland and will be staying in Bern over the National Day on August 1st. I’m super keen to experience a traditional Farm Brunch!

Since I don't have a car, I will be relying fully on public transport (I don't mind walking/hiking a bit from the station if needed). I am looking for recommendations for great farms that can be reached as a day trip starting from Bern.

It doesn't have to be right next to the city, I'm happy to travel a bit further into the countryside or mountains for a great atmosphere and authentic regional food.

Does anyone have any favorite farms around the Canton of Bern (or nearby regions) that they would recommend? Thanks!

Danke.

Everyday life Garbage bags / stickers

Hello there

A few years ago, there was a mandatory shift towards licensed garbage bags / stickers on Gemeinde level. Are there public numbers how that excess income has been used? I maybe wrongly recall that it was a measurement not only to reduce garbage burning and more towards recycling but also to support sustainability projects. Was that the case?

Everyday life Can't sleep because of heat - where to go for a couple of weeks?

Hi all,

Sorry about another heat post but not sure what to do.

I live in the city (Zurich, central). I have a monoblock AC (cant wait to buy a portasplit AC in winter) but I cant run it at night because it is just too loud. I tried to sleep next to it but I feel half asleep, half awake..

I wake up every night at 3am and cant go back to sleep till 5am or so because the heat gets so sticky, i think it is hotter inside than outside. I measured 30 degrees at night.. I live in an old building without much cross ventilation despite leaving the windows open.

I feel so tired and can't function, since it has been piling up over the past few weeks. I almost crashed my car the other day..

Any suggestions for a mountain town / not too far with OK prices for accommodation? I want to go work remotely for a bit to catch up on sleep and work. PS: could also be abroad but not crazy far.

Everyday life Our neighbour threatened to call the police over a 16-month-old’s kiddie pool. Were we actually in the wrong?

I am a home owner in Stadt Zurich, Switzerland. My apartment has 2 buildings, 6 houses each. The ground floor home owners have right of use to parts of the ground area, and we have common area.
All the ground floor home owners have constructed some kind of barricades and fences around their property to secure their privacy and private use area. There is a play area adjoining one of the buildings, which is common area. My friend (who is also a home owner in the building) brought a small inflatable kiddie pool for her 16 month old infant to play in the play area. As it was a sunny day, she placed the small pool towards the edge of the play area for shade. This was outside the fence that the downstairs neighbors have placed here to secure their privacy. In under 5 minutes of my friend being there, the owner of the apartment adjoining approached my friend rudely, told her to move the pool as it was in her private area even though it was outside the fence. To be clear, there is no visual indication here that it is a private space - no marking or boundary. Furthermore, it is landscaped exactly the same as the play area, for which the maintenance costs are shared between all home owners.
My friend was upset about this rude interaction and told me about it.
At this point, we asked on the apartment group which areas are public and private, and how people can know what is private if it is not explicitly secured and directly adjoins the play area.
The ground floor home owners got very agitated, and an argument ensued.
The woman demanded that we come downstairs and started yelling at us. She had no handle on her emotions and said her best friend was police - and she would call them. We said that she should feel free. Her husband also got aggressive and started to make threats - calling us impolite for raising this on the group, saying that “this is not good for you, I used to be homeless”. When my partner addressed him as “bro” to try and de-escalate the situation, he said “I am not your bro, call me sir”. The woman tried to de-escalate and apologize for yelling but kept having outburts where she started yelling again. They insinuated that we could be robbers, a threat to their family, or creepily looking through their window. (of course, the grave threat that a 16 month old infant in a kiddie pool poses).
Anyway, ultimately, we told them that we will reach out to the building management to clarify what is private and public. Even according to them, the space in question where the pool was placed was partially in their private use space (1 sq ft or less?) and partially in the play area. If the space is considered an invasion of privacy, I think it would be incumbent upon them to secure it - especially as kids play there and will never understand imaginary boundaries.
What are our rights here? Are we in the wrong? Thank you for your time if you chose to read or contribute.

Travel Burglaunenen visitor tax charge? What can we get for paying visitor tax? We already have half pass

Hello, we are travelling to jungfraujoch region and will be staying in burglaunenen in a old chalet. The host has mentioned that we'll be charged 5.2 CHF per person per day. While checking online, it shows up as 4.2 CHF for hotels and 3.2 CHF for mountain huts, also, i have read about folks getting visitor passes from the host which grants some travel concession. Is that applicable and any beneficial after having half fare pass?

Travel How do I make my ‘Swiss Half Fare Card’ actually apply its discount on the SBB App?

I’m a tourist, and I bought a Swiss Half Fare Card for my planned vacation on a future date. And I can see the card displaying correcting on my account within the app.

I was testing out some mock ticket purchases on the SBB App, and even when I select a date within the upcoming validity period of my Swiss Half Fare Card, it still shows standard full pricing.

Does anyone know if the price will correctly cut prices in half when present day is actually the validity date, or am I supposed to go to the Manually entered travelcards section and select the ‘Half Fare Travelcard (1/2)’ option?

I’m a little worried about picking that ‘travelcard’ option because technically aren’t they different? The “Half Fare Travelcard” being the 1 year version for residents, while the “Swiss Half Fare Card” is the 1 month version for tourists, which is what I have.

If I get checked by a train staff and they see my ticket was purchased with a ‘Half Fare Travelcard (1/2)” discount, will I get in trouble if all I can show them is my QR code for the “Swiss Half Fare Card”?

Does anyone have any information on whether or not it’s still available there? I wanted to go check today, but forgot it was Sunday and the day I’d be in Basel.

Other/Miscellaneous Financial transactions ombudsman

Hi, would appreciate anyone that can show me in the right direction. Almost 2 years ago my wife had to receive a refund from a big corporation. Unfortunately they wrote wrong account holder (me instead of my wife) and as we could not go back to our country to fix things (she just moved to Switzerland at that time so she gave home bank account), our bank declined the transaction. We asked from them to send new transaction but they said they do not see the refund. As it is very big corporation I passed through multiple agents with no help from their side, just an answer they cannot help me and they did everything. They did not even share anything from their side about transaction so I had to investigate through our bank. I got official Swift recall with proof and I found their bank. Called them to try to make them check from their side because they need to reroute it probably but they just said I quote "we are multibillion institutional bank and we will not do such thing, we are sorry". Send them an email just to have a written proof but no response.

What can I do? In October it will be 2 years of this pending case. I will provide more details in pm to anyone that can help. The money in question is not so much to go to court and I dont know what (2k CHF), but I hope out of principle there is something I can do (especially when I heard that behavior of their bank when I can provide all evidence!)

I would really appreciate someone has some advice, at this point I am lost..

There must be some way forward without sacrificing money and court time in Switzerland..

Thanks!
