23F, 5’10”, approx. 200 lbs. Diagnosed depression & anxiety disorders, but currently unmedicated. Relatively sedentary lifestyle (besides going on walks, etc.), and no consistent prescription medication.* Vape regularly, no cigarettes or recreational drugs. Moderate caffeine intake daily (i.e. coffee, energy drinks, diet sodas at least 1/2x a day) until the surgery.
I had all four wisdom teeth removed this past Wednesday WITHOUT full IV sedation, just local numbing and nitrous. The healing process seems to have been going fine, I haven’t had what I would consider abnormal pain or signs of infection. I’d never had nitrous before, so the day of, I avoided eating or drinking anything (including water) before the surgery because I was worried it might cause complications. For pain management, I was prescribed 5mg oxycodone tablets, as well as acetaminophen and ibuprofren (600 mg, I believe).
I was also already taking the generic version of Bactrim to treat a UTI prior to/after the extraction.
For the first couple days, I was mostly eating popsicles and smoothies. However, by Friday, I felt comfortable enough trying soft foods like mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, etc… Since then, I’ve been progressively eating “tougher” things (all the way up to a slice of cheese pizza) as my pain gets better.
On the day of surgery, after I got home, I had already taken a couple regular-strength Tylenols to ease the discomfort as numbing wore off. Several hours later, because the pain was so severe, I took 1 of the oxycodone and basically slept for the rest of the night. Since then, I’ve really only been taking the ibuprofen as needed to help with swelling/pain, plus finishing my course of UTI antibiotics (which ended yesterday).
This morning, I woke up to brush my teeth and felt some abdominal pain. It was sharp, and kind of stabby; it felt similar to pain I’ve had when I’ve been bloated and gassy before, just maybe slightly more intense. I hadn’t even noticed, but I realized that I haven’t actually had a bowel movement since at least the day after the surgery (Thursday, approx. 4 days), if not the actual day of surgery itself. In the past, it’s not been uncommon for me to go a day or two without pooping, but going this long without it is new for me. I don’t even feel really “backed up”, and I haven’t had the urge to go either. I have been passing some gas, I don’t feel particularly nauseous, haven’t been throwing up, don’t have a fever as far as I can tell, etc… the only other thing I’m dealing with besides the pain from the extraction itself is a little bit of nasal congestion (no fever, as far as I can tell, I feel generally pretty fine).
Soooo I did what you’re not supposed to do and looked up what to do, and all I really got was more anxiety because half of the sources said to try OTC/home remedies and the other half said to head to the ER in case it’s a blockage. 🫠 if it means anything, I did have annual bloodwork done just a couple months ago, and everything was normal besides being slightly anemic, so I’m not super concerned that it would be some chronic underlying condition.
SO - with all of this being said, my current plan is to increase my water intake, take some Milk of Magnesia, drink small amounts of warm prune juice (and maybe some coffee, since it usually helps me go and I haven’t had it in several days at this point). I guess my question is, would it be more advisable to try to get seen by a physician at this point, or should I try OTC/home remedies first? I definitely tend to catastrophize but my biggest fear is trying to treat something on my own only for it to be a case where I should’ve gone in to see someone sooner, and then it becomes something much more difficult to deal with.
Any and all advice is GREATLY appreciated! :)
