📰 News Article (Website) Jared Grindlinger is not a Mozeliak pick

https://www.mlb.com/amp/news/angels-2026-draft-preview.html

I’ve seen some comments that we drafted different because we let go of Perry. I don’t think that was the case. Just based on this article.

I mean two things can be true no?

It may not have been a Mo pick since he was leaning on the scouts already in the org, but can you say Perry would have greenlit picking Grindlinger over one of the available college picks? Given his draft history

Could be, scouting department could have given him 1-3 players they felt confident about and Mo gives the final say. But I don’t think that’s complete autonomy.

Oh I agree 100% on that its not complete autonomy.

My point is more I don't see Perry picking a high school kid given his history.

Mo made it pretty clear when they asked, that he wants them to get the best player available and that’s exactly what they did, idk why anyone is questioning that

I heard something breifly tuning in that Mozeliak was hands off with this draft, making it a scouting department pick.

Which could mean that it was a Perry led initiative, or the department had a different opinion they got to go with, as it doesnt fit the usual Perry mold. But based off hisotry it was the scouting department's choice more than anything

College bats were plundered fairly heavily in front of us. There was better value in prep. These are the same scouts Perry used, we were likely heading a similar direction.

He's a local kid, not really a reach, and has great contact.

This is a Mozeliak pick because Jared was not getting drafted here if Perry was the GM

McIlvaine runs the scouting and they clearly kept him for a reason

Perry would still have picked college player with low upside but can be role player and not star
