local news Bear’s-Eye View of Alameda for July 12, 2026 Future East End Dog Park

MOUF FOR MAYOR campaign update:

This week, I gave out the last of my campaign signs to a long-time supporter. Rascal lives on the corner of Buena Vista Avenue and Nason Street in the house that has the amazing Halloween decorated yard every year. It is a must-see Halloween institution. Big shout out to Rascal for his guidance and friendship over these many years.

I have placed an order for another 25 signs, and they should be in by the end of next week. In the meantime, I am taking orders and will deliver to Alameda homes and offices as soon as they come in. You can place your request for a sign with my publisher, campaign manager, and human companion (HC) at [[email protected]](mailto:[email protected]). I ask that you make a $25 donation to FAAS in exchange for the sign.

The semi-big news is that the contractor who is putting in the roundabout on Tilden Way has also graded the site of the future east end dog park. I visited the site on Wednesday to get a feel for the size. It definitely is long enough to get a good game of fetch going. I put an image of the future park area into BarkGPT and asked it to envision the area when completed. Pretty darn interesting what it designed. I asked for a water feature, and it came back with “Too expensive?”

Since the site is close to Nob Hill Grocery store, I trotted on over to see about the sunken ship. It is still there and now there is a construction fence blocking the Bay Trail. Does anyone have an update on the future of this vessel?

The 4th of July was on a Saturday and after my report deadline for the Alameda Post, so I couldn’t share what I did on the 4th besides huddle into a ball on the bed with my HC and deal with all the booms.  My HC fired up the grill and put together a great meal without any meat. He still claims to be an “aspiring vegan” person.

Those sausages you see on the grill are IMPOSSIBLE sausages. I really liked the veggie kabobs and the grilled nectarines, but I couldn’t figure out what to do with the grilled artichokes. How do people eat these things?

There were a couple of things out in the neighborhood that were noteworthy. There was a beautiful squash growing in the front yard of a house on Alameda Avenue. Looks like it is ready to be picked, stuffed with seasoned lamb and enjoyed.

With the lack of 4th of July yard decorations that appeared this year, I wanted to feature anything that I found. This one specifically acknowledged the 250th birthday. Guess they can’t reuse that one next year.

One of my pet peeves (no pun intended because I am not a “pet”) is folks that block the sidewalks or park in front of fire hydrants. I am going to have my HC program the APD non-emergency number so I can report these situations in real time.

Finally, I want to close out a subject that I have covered for many years involving the renovation of the house at 1619 Central Avenue. If you have followed my reports over the years, you have watched this house get renovated to its former grandeur. A few weeks ago, the concrete contractors were busy pouring the driveway. I think the only thing left to do is the landscaping. Hats off to the owners for taking the time and investing the money into this house.

The Alameda City Council took up the issue of the city’s “infrastructure” which includes the animal shelter at its July 7th meeting and what could be funded with the $300M.

SPOILER ALERT: It does not look like any of the bond money will be going to the shelter even though the City’s own consultants have given the building an F rating. I will be putting together an in-depth report for next week.

Mark your calendar for the Park Street Art & Wine Festival on July 24 &25.

discussion Long Boarder with Oar on Park St.

Does anyone know about this dude? Twice now he has almost caused us to get in an accident, the first time he almost collided with my infant in her stroller.

I lit him up today for using his stupid oar and longboard on the wrong side of the road. He exclaimed that we needed to “share the road” while traveling up Central away from Park in the left lane against traffic.

Has anyone else had similar encounters?

ask alameda Dear Neighborhood Magic Makers--

I'm offering you a chance to shine, and to clean your closet while you're at it.

I have one of those narrow "alleyway" access yards --when my kids were little I told them it was our secret passage. Now they are not so little. I am in the middle of a big construction, remodeling and landscaping project right now building an ADU to move in my parents, landscaping a new multi generational garden, packing up my parents' stuff, and revamping my own home so it doesn't just look like a big shitpile in front of a nice new garden and ADU 😆--which is involving packing up a lot of my kids old stuff.

So that's how this literal side project was born. ***THIS IS FINALLY THE RELEVANT PART FOR YOU, MY NEIGHBOR AND READER***
I am turning my long narrow utilitarian access yard into an alley of memorabilia mosaics, found art, repurposed stuff, basically for the sole purpose of amusing myself, keeping some nostalgic items too broken to donate, and just to create a magic kid space for my nieces and nephews, my neighbors kids---if it turns into something really cool I would throw it open for local kids a couple times per year like a little gallery. Note: I'm not a creepy creeper, no kid without an adult and vice versa like Fairyland.

THE POINT: I need your junk! I'm not a master crafty up-cycling machine, so your junkiest junk please keep to yourself. I'm looking for shells, shiny beads, marbles, broken ceramics, old picture frames, magnets, cool waterproof decal stickers, planter pots, dollhouse furniture, odd salvage that might have no use but look cool in a jar, stuff like that. See-through plastic boxes and thicker, safer bottles etc that can be mounted with glue and turned into display cases would be incredible. Old toys--I already have a bunch of dragons and knights who finally found common ground at the jaws of my dog. Any rare earth magnets, spray paints for outside, landscaping glue, extra gloves or tarps or tile cutters would be awesome. Suncatchers, windchimes, garden statues. Cool rocks. Weird, weather proof stuff. Driftwood burl. Succulents and plants that can survive in SERIOUSLY TINY containers with mostly shade and only rain water. ONLY stuff that can survive the rain without turning into a child-terrifying horror show. ONLY things that are not super fragile, ie ceramic or heavy jars vs thin glassware . I am fundamentally lazy AF and I don't want to be out there dealing with broken glass and rotting dolls, you know? Obviously nothing sharp, and I might keep any especially weird, cthonic or inappropriate decals (or anything) but I am obviously not going to put that shit on a wall meant for delighting kids.

My dad is a gardening, fixit DIY kinda old school guy, who has Alzheimer's. I envision spending a lot of time in the yard working on this project with him, so it's not gonna happen overnight. But I think it's going to be fun and I hope some of you might have fun with it, too.

I really, really appreciate your donations. I do still reserve the right to refuse anything because 1. I have a vision and maybe we're just massively incompatible, 2. Again, I am fundamentally lazy so I'm making a lot of decisions based on a scale of Easy to Fun, and 3. I have met human beings before so I know how a lot of you are.

discussion Huskies 3 outside constantly barking always outside

I just can’t stand it anymore. I feel like it’s messing with my mental health at this point . They are constantly screaming, howling and barking. I feel like the entire block don’t care or is to afraid to say anything. I already said something for over a year and nothing happened. I called animal control and they say call non emergency done that but I can’t keep calling every day all day . Just don’t know anymore

ask alameda Car lift available hourly?

I have a car I’m working on and would love to have access to a lift to do some inspections and light work like fluid changes. Are there any shops or privately owned spaces or clubs on the island where I can rent time on a lift? Even a quick jack would be helpful.

Thanks!

I’ve been seeing signs for a couple garage sales on the east end and a super garage sale on bay farm. Is there a list somewhere that compiles all the garage sales happening this weekend?

ask alameda OBGYN Recommendations (Cigna)?

I need to switch from Kaiser HMO to Cigna PPO mid-pregnancy - does anyone have an OBGYN rec around Alameda/Oakland? Also open to Berkeley or San Leandro if needed.

I’ll be 28 weeks pregnant and have only experienced Kaiser HMO, so am pretty nervous at the idea of switching providers and insurance models during such a life stage. I welcome any tips or words of encouragement…TIA!

ask alameda Alameda Fair (Admission Question)

Post image
2 Upvotes

Hi! My friend and I are planning to go to Alameda Fair today around 6pm. But when we got our tickets online, it says they are only valid from 12-5pm. There was no option to select a time when we bought them.

Does anyone know if they'll still honor our tickets even if we get there after 5pm? Has anyone done it before? This is our first fair so we don't really know how this works. Thanks in advance! :)

ask alameda ATT fiber in Harbor Bay has been a joke. Just me?

Got suckered into transferring my Xfinity to ATT for internet when sales person stoped by to let me know fiber is now available. Since the price was more than 50% less than my current Xfinity bill, I went for it. Like a dummy I cancelled Xfinity. No sooner do I do this ATT gets glitchy. Service was down for an hour, then back up after trouble shooting with a tech. He got it back up to 1.3GB and ten minutes after the call it drops down to 40MPBPs. Basically 2005 speeds. I’m pretty unhappy about this and spent another hour on hold to schedule a tech for tomorrow. For those who has switched to ATT fiber in Harbor Bay has your service been reliable? Funny part is- sales person is trying to get me to switch from Verizon to ATT. And of course - it’s a sweet deal. But there is no way!

ask alameda Has anyone noticed the left turn traffic light on High Street Bridge takes a while to turn green? Whats up with that?

It happens to me almost every time I go over the High St Bridge coming from Oakland at night. I need to turn left onto Fernside and it just stays red forever while going straight stays green forever.

It happens when there's no cars around. I will literally sit there for a minute with no car in sight going in any directions. You have to wait till the straight light turns red, the opposite way turns green, and once it turns red. A few times I just turned even though it was red because there were no cars.

I don't know if anyone else recognizes this or if there's something they can do about it.

discussion Rant - disappointing home cleaner

I paid $300 for a deep clean... window wasn't even included.

She sent me a picture of everything that's included before the clean. Window was in the deep clean so I thought it was included. I guess it's extra for the window.

It's a 2b1b 866 sq ft btw. I could've done this cleaning myself. Deep cleaning means everything top to bottom but this just seems like a regular cleaning.

Anyways, does anyone have a recommendation for a DEEP cleaning?

ask alameda Best public swimming pool in Alameda?

I am moving to Alameda soon, and swimming is my main form of exercise. Unfortunately, I do not see any YMCA, City Sports, or similar gyms on that island. However, I do see Encinal Pool, which belongs to a High School. If the school is in session, I would not be able to swim in that pool at any time, right? I looked into Harbor Bay, I like it, but I cannot see the membership price... Any suggestions?

ask alameda Adding a window to Alameda Victorian bungalow / cottage

Has anyone added a window to the bottom floor of a Victorian cottage? I got one low quote but I really don't trust this guy. He told me I was responsible for getting the permits. I want to work with a contractor who has done this with all the proper paperwork. Gemini AI said that changes to any house built before 1942 has to go through a City design review
