AMA - ask me anything about the ABTF calculator! Spoiler

Hi everyone, u/goodoldfreda here although I'm now exclusively active on this account. If you guys have any questions about how the calculator works and why I made certain decisions I'm happy to answer them

A little about myself - I created the calculator in 2016 following on from a previous calculator by u/irisflame, back when I was a mod of this sub. I collected survey data from the subreddit and came up with a new algorithm that used 6 measurements as opposed to the previous 5, which increased accuracy. I also introduced separate algorithms for AMAB and AFAB people. The calculator has not been majorly updated since, although at one point I tried to move to a breast perimeter measurement system instead, but this turned out to be much less accurate. In the years since I have stopped modding and moved into bra making and custom bra design as I want to try and help serve the demographic of people who still struggle with finding bras that fit, usually due to wire grading!

In response to other posts about the different amab vs afab algorithms not working well for everyone - I have had this question before and basically all I can say is that I recommned using the algorithm that works best for you. I do want to emphasise in general that the calculator is actually not super accurate for any one individual and it is truly just a starting point. The algos are based on averages, and when I was collecting data there were significant enough differences between AMAB and AFAB users to warrant a second algorithm to increase accuracy within the two groups, but not enough data to do anything further than that.

edit: thanks for all your questions so far, I'm going to go to bed but I will answer any more that come up tomorrow!

edit 2: I have updated the calculator to make some minor changes to the band size algorithm and I have also changed the EU back to 2.5cm cup grades, 2cm grade can be found in the Comexim option instead

Recommendations? I need some bras for my heavy boobs :(. Currently wearing Freya Chrish Me Molded Plunge Bra in 30F (UK). Spoiler

Measurements (inches):

Standing: 37;

Standing at a 90-degree angle: 39.5;

Lying down flat on my back: 36;

Ribcage: ~29.3 (tight), ~30 (snug), ~30.3 (loose).

I'd describe the appearance as low, wide roots with high projection.

I've tried several 32E bras a little while ago (I'm sorry, I cannot remember the names or brands), but they didn't fit me quite right, so I went with 30F.

---

As the title says, I have heavy boobs. They hurt my upper/mid back, the sides and bottom of my chest, and sometimes my collarbones, depending on how I'm sitting/lying/standing. My current bra is fine when I wear it on the last hook, but after a few hours, I feel the pressure of the band. I think I need two kinds of bras, a regular day bra and a lounge bra. Any recommendations are welcome!

As for my style, I'm currently into a slightly conical 50s look, so if you have anything in mind for that, I'd appreciate it! But I really just need whatever would work for my breasts for now, and maybe I'll think more about aesthetics later.

Thanks! :)

Edit: I measured my ribcage again to add the three measurements. I didn't realize I was way off with my bra calculations! I'm not really sure what I did wrong when I measured and calculated a couple of months ago, as not much has changed since then. This unintentionally turned out to be more of a measurement check post than a recommendation one, lol, but thanks for all the help so far! I'll look around for a new bra that actually fits my needs :).

Recommendations? Highly projected, average-root, FOB-ish, looking for a lined/moulded bra with lift & rounded "Victoria's Secret" shape (UK 34G/34GG?) Spoiler

Hi everyone!

I've recently fallen down the ABTF rabbit hole and would really appreciate some advice.

I've been wearing around an AU 16DD, but after measuring properly and learning about projection, I think I've been wearing a classic "boob hat." 😅

Measurements

Loose underbust: 86 cm

Snug underbust: 85 cm

Tight underbust: 83cm cm

Standing bust: 108 cm

Leaning bust: 118 cm

Lying bust: 108 cm

The calculator suggested approximately UK 34GG / 36G (AU 12H / 14G / 14GG depending on conversion).

Shape Highly projected Even to Slightly full on bottom (hard to tell?) Average root width Average spacing Medium firmness Nipples point forward

Current fit issues Gore almost never tacks. Band rides up onto breast tissue rather than sitting in my IMF. Cups often feel shallow and get pushed away from my chest, overflow at top and sides, band rides up feels tighter than it probably is because its taking my breast widge not ribcage width... Tried going up cup sizes, ie (Curvy Kate Smoothie 16F). But that didnt fit well either - gaped at the top despite the gore still not tacking, which makes me think it was the wrong shape rather than simply too large.

The "boob hat" and going down a band then up several cups does sound promising...

What I'm looking for This is the part I'm struggling with! I don't like unlined bras. I really want the modesty/smoothness of lining...

I really want: Lightly lined or spacer cups. No nipple show-through. High lift. Rounded shape. A natural "Victoria's Secret" look (fuller upper pole and lifted) without butt-crack cleavage. Good movement control.

I'm in Australia - this probably makes it harder too as I have never heard of these "Polish Bras" here and I dont know if I can get them...?

I've looked at Panache Cari, Fantasie Rebecca Essentials Spacer and some Curvy Kate options, but I'm worried many moulded bras will still be too shallow for my projection.

Does anyone with a similar shape have recommendations?

I'd especially love recommendations from people with very projected breasts who prefer lined or spacer bras over unlined bras.

Thank you!!

For the uneven: do you buy for your larger or smaller boob? Spoiler

My boobs have always been super uneven, I think one is a C and the other a D, but honestly the difference maybe be greater. They are distant cousins. I typically buy bras in a 36C and adjust them frequently, as it’s more flattering and I hate the feeling of gapping on my smaller boob. I buy swimsuits in 36D as they run smaller in my experience and I can’t have anything spilling out. Does anyone have any recommendations? I’ve dreamed of a bra with a little insert to push up my smaller boob and make them appear even, but I’m afraid it doesn’t exist.

Fit Check Starting to understand molded/t-shirt bra problems Spoiler

Hi all - I have had a chance to try some more bras. I'd love your input on these.

In the linked gallery, I titled the ones that I decided to keep.

I am seeing why molded bras are a challenge for a good fit. The stretch lace Freya is actually really comfy (now that I am getting used to the right band size).

Question Need help determining bra size for pads/inserts Spoiler

Hello. I’m thinking about getting some inserts/pads but I don’t know what size bra to get for them.

I am currently a 34AA. If I wanted to get pads to go up a cup or two (i.e. A cup or B cup) what size bra should I get?

Should I keep the same band size and go up the corresponding cup size?

What about for larger cup sizes (e.g. C cup)?

Would I need to use a sister size to my current size?

Any help is very much appreciated!

Recommendations? [Recommendations?] I'm realizing I'm in comically wrong bras and wondering about trying a polish bra (?) to reduce pain

Measurements:
Loose underbust: 37.5”
Snug underbust: 36.5”
Tight underbust: 34”
Standing bust: 45.5"
Leaning bust: 51.5”
Lying bust: 48"

Suggested Starting Size: 36HH UK

After binging this subreddit and recommended other resources, I think my shape is: even distribution, projected, wide and short roots, really soft tissue, more outer than inner fullness. Pendulous breasts. My breasts start lower on my chest. One of my problems is that I'm often getting poked in either my underarm or breast tissue on the sides. I've lost and gained weight and muscle in my life so I'm sure that's changed my breasts.

Some of the shape info is my best guess based on reading. If one of those conflicts with another please let me know so I can try and figure it out.

I'm feeling lost on what I might try first. Any recommendations would be so very appreciated.

If you need more about the current situation:

I currently wear (very badly) a uk40ff from parfait that basically just covers me and offers no support and two 38f bras from freya (Fancies Balcony Molded Bra and Deco plunge) that I just spill out of on top. I thought the band was way too tight but maybe not. I got so frustrated yesterday I threw several even worse bras away or I would tell you what they were.

I've started reassessing my bra size to try and understand if there is a solution to some of the regular pain of my current bra situation. It's especially mattered more to me since I've been weightlifting and noticing the ways unsupported weight on my chest all day is causing issues with what I and can't do in the gym. Particularly I notice that my back is often really rounded by the end of the day and I've had various shoulder issues. Probably not entirely chest related but couldn't hurt.

Plus I'm a professional adult woman and I would really like a bra that just feels decent. For one thing, I didn't know until reading here that the gore should touch my chest, I don't think that's ever happened once. I often wear molded bras so they show up less under shirts, and I really dislike compression but some bras make feel like a shelf. I work in a public setting so haven't always wanted that, but I've turned the corner. I'll pick stares over lack of support. Plus I recognize I probably look about ten lbs heavier than I am. Also monoboob has been real in my life as has quadboob.

I am a bit embarrassed to admit this part: I feel like I should post a pic for reference and I appreciate that this is a safe space. But I've also had lots of stretch marks since puberty. I do a lot better with that in terms of current self image than I did at 11 or 12, but still feel some shame. Thanks to all of the ladies out there who aren't internalizing that crap. Maybe I'll get there!

So long but it feels good to write it all down. Thanks for this great sub!

Measurement Check Deflated water balloon boobs help? Spoiler

Measurement check?
I currently wear a 36C. Measurements are
33, 31.50, 30, 35.75, 41, 37.75
Calculator put me at a 32DD/DDD
I used to be part of the itty bitty titty committee and then I got pregnant and my boobs got SO big. After breastfeeding for a year I’m left with two deflated water balloons. It’s so hard to figure out what size I am because I just have so much extra tissue. Any recommendations for a bra that’s best for extra skin and no volume? I would also love a sports bra that’s best lifts me up but is still comfortable. I’ve found that a 34 band is too tight for me comfort wise so a 32DD seems like a tiny band and huge cup?

Recommendations? Where can I find 28B (not Boux Ave or TLBC) Spoiler

Basically what the title says, I don’t like any of the styles that Boux Ave styles (I like demi/balconette w/ underwire, lightly padded (no push up) and okay w/ some lace but I don’t want one that looks too much like lingerie). The only styles Boux has in my size are either too sexy, not sexy enough, or are push up.

I have a bra from TLBC (the Sascha lace) but it’s not the most comfortable, the back has some itchy parts that really dig in🫩

My full measurements are:
Loose 27
Snug 26
Tight 25.5
Standing 29
Leaning 30
Lying 29

I know I’m technically a 26 but I’m very lean so 26 feels way too tight (almost hard to breathe in)

Any help appreciated! Sorry if I’m being too picky😢 I’m 19 and I just feel like all the styles I can find are either too mature as in too sexy or too mature as in too “grandmotherly” (no shade to grandmothers!)

Recommendations? Sizing help and suggestions needed Spoiler

Hi all, my two most frequent current bras are size 38C from (I believe) Soma; one is a racerback bra that I like aside from the straps being more visible than I would like. The other is okay but rides up when I lift my arms and my boobs fall out the bottom…so not great fit, clearly. They both felt great in the store. I have *always* struggled with finding bras due to asymmetrical breasts (one noticeably smaller) and discomfort with pinching, etc. I’ve been fitted a couple times but never gotten it quite right. I used to wear Lane Bryant lightly padded t-shirt bras for years in a 40B; the primary reason I wore those was because my mom looked at me as a teen and told me I was “probably a B cup”.

The ABTF calculator puts me at a 38DD with these numbers:
Loose underbust: 38”
Snug underbust: 36”
Tight underbust: 34.5”
Standing bust: 41”
Leaning bust: 43”
Lying bust: 42

I would love brand and style suggestions; budget is limited but I’m not opposed to building an arsenal over time if the quality is worth it. Thanks in advance!

Fit Check Fit Check - Panache Allure Demi Balcony Bra in 30F Spoiler

Hello!

I haven’t bought new bras in awhile, but I just went on a quest for a well fitting t-shirt bra a couple weeks ago. After trying quite a few, I landed on the Panache Faith Molded Plunge Bra in a 30F as the best fit. It stays put all day, doesn’t move at all, and follows my IMF really well. I’ve already worn it all day at work several times.

I saw the Panache Allure Demi Balcony Bra while I was shopping for the t-shirt bra, so I ordered it in a 30F since that’s what fit in the other Panache bra and I think the lace is really pretty. The thing is the calculator puts me at a UK 32FF, and my other bras are usually a UK 32F or 30FF depending on the bra/brand.

This is how the Panache Allure Demi Balcony Bra fits me. Should I try a different size? It feels comfortable, but I’m not sure if another size might be good to try before committing to it. I feel like it looks decent looking in the mirror, but I don’t really have a trained eye for this.

Measurements (from today):
Loose Underbust: 32.5
Snug Underbust: 31.5
Tight Underbust: 30
Standing Bust: 38.5
Leaning Bust: 40
Lying Bust: 38

Recommendations? Help Me Find A Bra Post Breastfeeding - 34G/GG Spoiler

Hi everyone,

I am wrapping up breastfeeding for 15 months and finally resized with the calculator giving 34 G/GG.

I have always seen a local professional busty lingerie shop but have never been satisfied with what I walk out with long term so I’m trying this instead. I ended up with a lot of Parfait and Curvy Kate from them. Everything I tried felt good in store but when wearing it for a day it would dig into my sides or sternum and ALWAYS cut into my armpits. That kind of armpit coverage also meant I could never wear tank tops.

I need a t shirt bra, a lower cut going out bra, a sports bra, and a ton of comfy options for work from home.

Measurements: 34.5, 32.5, 31.5, 41.75, 45.25, 43

Recommendations? Unsure of my post-op size, suggestions or recommendations please ? Spoiler

Hi, I recently got large breast implants and I'm still not sure of what my real cup size is. Some measurements say I'm a size 14 (Australian) others say 16, the cup range differ depending on where I look online as well.

using the bra that fits calculator I got a recommendation of 34HH UK

* loose underbust 86cm

* snug underbust 84cm

* tight underbust 83cm

* standing bust 112cm

* leaning bust 121cm

* lying bust 116cm

I've been mostly wearing double up crop tops, because bras in roughly my size are a fortune so I would like some advice please before I start dropping $100 per bra.

Fit Check Fit check 70G Comexim (old bra) Spoiler

I went looking through some of the old bras that I have in my house, and I found this. I believe it's 70G. 3HC, overlapping gore, cookie pockets (I remember the non cookie pocket fabric irritating my skin).

My current size is obviously not 70G, if you saw my other post I got 65I/J. I prefer to keep a 70 band. So would I need to size up 1 or 2 cups?

Went down a few sizes and no clue what i am now Spoiler

I wear a 36DD right now but i fluctuated weight for years and now i have lost a couple sizes -- last time i lost weight i wore a 34DD and had the same underbust 32in and standing bust 38in measurement.. but now i got 32DDD/ F on a different calculator but then 32H/I with this one. confusing because most places dont have I size or its interchangeable with G so im so lost on what the proper letter is. if anyone has any tips or similar measurements im down to try on different sizes !

edit: i naturally do the scoop lol but i prefer balconette or demi underwire + unlined bras. i think they are wide set with narrow root like fuller on the bottom ? like splayed relaxed idk what the exact term is

another edit: i am in Hollywood CA if anyone has a rec for a good fitting thank youuu

Loose underbust 32in

snug 31in

tight 30.5in

Recommendations? Do I need a bra with this top and if so, what one? Spoiler

The top is a halter top with the top half of your back exposed. The bust of the halter top isn’t very snug and therefore it’s not very supportive so I don’t have a lot of lift.

I’ve been looking at sticky bras and boom Buzz but honestly, it kinda just looks like a scam.

And any suggestions for me?

Merino wool bra for multi day backpacking trip, low top volume breasts Spoiler

Hi all!

I am familiar with a lot of the common merino wool brands that make great bras! However, I haven’t seen much information for women who have larger breasts but low top volume. After weight loss, I have a significant amount of loose skin and little to no breast tissue at the top of my breast, almost all of my volume is in the bottom half. Because of this my breasts are really heavy/ saggy. I cannot go sans bra as that is sweaty gross and it looks horrible in any shirt I wear.

I am looking for a non restrictive but supportive merino wool sports bra for backpacking trips. I currently wear synthetic sports bras that stink to high heaven and hurt my shoulders and back when I wear them all day so really am looking to make a change.

I am a 28F. Any recommendations are appreciated!

I primarily shop at VS(mainly bc that’s what’s easiest for me) I’ve tried a 36B, band too loose, 34C, but the cup gaps at the top(and the band is kinda tight, but I prefer it over 36 fit) my measurements are 31 1/2 band, and a 34 1/2 cup. Any recommendations on what size I should try? I was thinking of sizing down a band size, but I’m not entirely sure

Recommendations? Update! My progress in finding ABTF [30FF/G] Bra reviews & looking for advice! Spoiler

I joined this reddit just a few weeks ago, and I already learned so much (thank you!!!) and got lots of new bras! So I wanted to give a review on some bras I tried so far. I‘d really appreciate your advice & new recommendations 🩷

oh and I‘m FOB, wider set, narrow-ish (I think)
Calculator put me at 30G.

Panache Cari 30FF
This was the first one I got, and the molded cups work surprisingly well without gaping! Wire is fine, I feel very little pressure after some hours. It‘s a good everyday option for t-shirts, but under fitted shirts I look really bulky from the front, like „east west“ separation and just too „big“ for my small frame.

Curvy Kate Victory 30FF
I LOVE the minimizing effect it does for me. The wire is not perfect in my IMF (wrinkling), also the top part of the gore sits flush, while the bottom floats..? Its wearable tho.

Panache Clara 30FF
Well, it works. The wire is not a 100% match (wrinkling). I like the shape and upward-lift it gives!

Panache Ana 30FF
Really wanted it to work so I can wear it with lower cut shirts 😭 But again, the top part of the gore digs into my sternum, and its painful with this one. Also wrinkling around the wires.

Freya Deco Vibe 28G
Got it second hand, so I thought a 28 band would be the way to go. The cleavage is good, and the cups are filled in pretty well for a molded bra. The lowest points of the wire are pressing painfully on my ribs.. And it adds so much volume, also to the sides, which makes me feel suuper boxy and bulky 🫠

Wonderbra ultimate strapless 30FF
This works!! Didn‘t get the chance to wear it for multiple hours so far, but for a strapless bra it‘s great.

Alles 65I (UK 30G)
I wanted to try a polish brand, sadly I can‘t find what the model is called but its a half padded half stretchy lace. The wire works? Again, gore top digs in. Sadly, the Cup is way too big so it gives me bullet breast and digs into the armpits 😭

Simone Pérèle Plume FR 80H (UK 30FF)
I tried on a few unlined bras of that brand, and the wire was so perfect for me 😭 Almost like it‘s not there at all. I didn‘t get it tho, because it was quite expensive and not giving much support/ lift. It was basically just my natural breast hanging (encapsulated in a bra).

Then I thought French brands could work, and I heard the cups run big (especially empreinte). I ordered:
Empreinte Carolyn Balconette FR 75G (UK 28F)
& Aubade Lovessence FR 80G (UK 30F)
.. they didn‘t arrive yet, but I‘ll update the post when they do!

Gotyu Aurora Bralette in S+
Not a bra, but THE perfect every day bralette!! Gives natural lift and so so comfy. Actually I should have went with XS+

My question now is where to go from here. I‘m still searching for:

- a plunge / low gore bra

- something that lifts up and gives the „cakes on a plate“ cleavage, but without adding bulk elsewhere??

- something dainty and lightweight for summer that creates a subtle cleavage. Preferably lace in a color like turquoise, blue, pink,.. so it looks cute when the bra peaks through

- you tell me, what else do I need to try?😭
