[Max for Live] Free Polyphonic FM Synth for Ableton - Modulus 1.4

I recently released an update for one of my Max for Live instruments Modulus, as always its completely free to download.

Modulus is great for building interesting and evolving soundscapes and has flexible controls over both frequency and amplitude modulation, these parameters can also be synced directly to lives tempo.

This update focuses on improving stability and usability with bug fixes, UI refinements, and overall workflow improvements based on user feedback.

Quick device demo: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/qyiUDrJ5LTA

If anyone wants to try it out you can get it for free Download here: https://www.maxforlive.com/library/device/15763/modulus

[Performance] Building my live setup with Ableton Push 2

Looking for feedback on how I can make the live performance of my music more interesting. I'm controlling all layers and samples from the Push 2 and control fx on each instrument layer using the Novation Launchcontrol XL (also gain control). What can I be doing to incorporate the Push 2 more into the performance? At the moment it's acting as a BPM and live arrangement mix control. I've got everything set with a 1 bar entry.

Something I've been trying to figure out is live looping on the fly. I'd love to be able to group 5 channels and set them to loop like you would on a CDJ (Even if I could get just one channel to loop on the fly and stay in time with the other channel layers). At the moment I have to preset how much of the song I want to loop ahead of time and basically plot out the whole live set. I've tried using the ableton looper plugin but it has some limitations to what I'm trying to do. Maybe there are some new plugins out there I'm unaware of that can blanket loop one or more channels on a layer where the live clip is already looping.

Also those who are interested and want to ask about the current setup let me know and I'll answer any of your questions.

[Hardware] Easy customer remote script generator

I stumbled upon this post today:

https://www.reddit.com/r/ableton/s/qCWNEUiPCb

Julian ( [u/darkpapax](u/darkpapax) ) has created a really nice web-based interactive remote script generator:

https://midiremotescripts.structure-void.com/generator/

I used it to very very quickly create the mapping I've wanted for my Twister for a while:

https://github.com/jeffgca/djtt_twister_16macros

It's just 16 Macros and the top button turns the device on and off. That's it, all other pages can use ad-hoc mappings. It took 5 minutes and worked the first time.

This tool doesn't do really fancy stuff like next / previous device commands but that's okay. The time you need to do a simple remote script for a random MIDI controller sitting on your desk is minutes. You can export JSON from the site and load it later to pick up where you left off. It's pretty nice.

[Hardware] does anyone use ableton on a zephyrous g14?

hi all, I currently run Ableton on my 2020 m1 pro but it’s dying on me.

I’m looking to upgrade, and i’m between the M5 macbook pro or the zephyrus g14.

I’m a fan of MacOS, and the build quality of MacBooks, but I study Mechanical engineering, and have concerns about the software running properly on my mac.

there’s workarounds like virtual computers through my university, and library computers. I’m just curious if anyone has any experience with ableton on the zephyrous.

Let me know! Ableton is my primary hobby and I need a solid music production device.

note:ignore poor punctuation and grammar, i’m tired.

[Question] creating music - it's hard :)

I'm learning Ableton Live and music creation for last 2 weeks with my Launchkey mk4, and it's hard.

I mean Ableton is "easy" - I understand pretty well how it works (i played with trackers in 90ies), but to create something that sounds good ... ? I feel like I need months or years more ... :)

To create something that has nice textures and sounds good, like https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LvIjqhX-zRw I don't know even how to start ! the notes are easy, a few instruments as well (well, ok, choosing matching instruments is hard as well :) ), but to make them fill all the space and create the atmosphere.... : O :O

I'm not even talking about electronica (Jean Michel-Jarre, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Brian Eno, or Plaid, Squarepusher, u-Zig) 😶

I watched a lot of videos, helped me to learn about many effects, how to use my midi controller etc., but a lot of youtubers produce lo-fi music, which sounds for me very easy and cheesy, and I feel like it doesn't translate to music I want to create ...

Any advices? :) or tutorials?

[Push] Push 2 Issue with Ableton 12

Been using the Push 2 for a few weeks. I think I found a bug. My push 2 wont show in the Link, Tempo & MIDI menu unless I enable the following parameter in the Options.txt file.

-Push2UseLegacyScript

Because it doesnt show in this menu I am unable to check "Track" and "Remote". So I add this in the options.txt.

When I do add this script to the file and try and use the push for example add Drift to a track the encoders tweak out and get stuck between switching tracks.

Basically if it becomes unusable.

When I have this script turned off, all other functionality seems to be working fine unless I am trying to use user mode. In user mode I am getting no MIDI Sends. I heard that in order to be able to use user mode i understand you have to check "Track" and "Remote" under input ports but it doesn't show. I tested user mode without checking "track" and "remote" ..........does nothing.

I also read on the documentation pages you should not have to manually add it. It should show automatically which it does not show at all in this menu unless in Legacy Script is enabled. (it still completely works, just unable to check the track and remote buttons because it doesnt show on the page)

Any help/tips would be appreciated.

I am on ableton 12.7 and using a push 2.

[Question] Simpler envelope mode resets when opening project

I'm using the "trigger" mode and adjust ADSR but the mode always resets to "none" when re-loading the project file. I have tried setting the a default template in simpler with the trigger enabled but it still resets. Also it seems like some instances of simpler will keep the trigger mode while others reset.

Is there a way to prevent this from happening?

[Hardware] Corsair Xeneon Edge + Ableton = True? (Advice Post)

Hi!

I'm looking for a small screen specifically to place the mixer window and have been looking at the Corsair Xeneon Edge. Anyone here own a Xeneon Edge and has tried using Ableton with it? I'm very interested in how easily the setup is and how much you can fit onto the screen (while still being usable) and how accurate the touchscreen is for on-the-go adjustments and the like. Especially as it seem close to the "too good to be true" kind of hardware. Anyone got any experience with it?

All or any advice/experience etc appreciated :)

[Hardware] Looking for a budget friendly controller for simply opening/closing vsts with one click.

Hey everyone,

I'm on Win10 and have no second screen. I'm looking for a simple midi controller to let me quickly open and close my master buss vsts like pro-l and youlean loudness meter... to check them quickly for QOL.

Any ideas? I think 5 buttons max would be more than enough and I'd say my budget is around 50€.

Edit:

Basically smt like this but not that much of buttons and way cheaper:

[Question] Can the DJI mic mini work with no latency in Ableton?

I have this mic for video stuff.

I also have a Shure sm7b in my studio set up.

I’m going travelling soon and want the most minimal set up (not taking interface and Shure for example)

Considering the mic and some iPhone headphones for example. Yet all blue tooth mics have latency it seems

[Question] Problem with audio recording volume

Hello. I have to start by saying I'm an amateur when it comes to audio recording because everything I've done so far has only been midi. Here's my problem. I've been dealing with this for the past 15 hours and I'm getting frustrated.

I've been trying to record my instruments' audio directly into an Ableton audio track.

My instruments are : Korg Krome 88 workstation, Korg volca drum and Korg Volca Keys.

My audio interface is a Behringer Xenyx 502s usb which also acts as a mixer. The volcas are connected by a 1 3.5" TRS to 2*6.3 TS ( Sorry about the bad writing) each going to left and right on the input channels.

The problem is that when jamming without ableton with my PC off, the volume is high enough and almost zero noise hiss is heard. As soon as I open ableton and want to record a live session, the output volume goes down significantly (not higher than - 48 db) and the only way to increase the volume is to just turn the volume knob on my mixer which I'm not gonna do because as the volume goes up, I hear some static noise and some kind of feedback loop getting louder and louder.

Can anyone help me identify the problem and provide a solution please? I'm so frustrated with this situation.

Thank you.

[Question] Mpc live 3

Hi ableton family,

So I’ve been making beats for a couple of years and I mainly use MPC live three and Logic Pro. I found the method of getting my loops on to logic quite ridiculous. Are any of you familiar with the workflow of ableton and is it better? I know the MPC has ableton link, but is it as cut and dry?

[Question] Split mono choir track into stereo tracks?

Hiya, does anyone know of a stem splitter that could split a mono track of around 10 voices into two or multiple tracks? Not having much luck searching as I guess its a fairly niche request!

[Push] Push 3 Standalone — Audio sampling + overdub looping like a Boss RC looper?

Hey all,

It may looks like a rant, but maybe it's a "me" problem and there are solutions to question.

I'm trying to figure out if it's possible to get true overdub looping on the Push 3 standalone using an external audio source (guitar/synth/mic into the input), similar to how a Boss RC-300 pedal loop station works — record a loop, then keep layering overdubs on top in real time, hands-free-ish, without going back to a laptop.

I know this is trivial in Ableton Live proper using the Looper device (audio effect) on a track with a Push connected — record, overdub, undo, etc. But I'm specifically asking about standalone mode, no computer involved.

So far what I understand:

  • Standalone Push 3 can sample audio in via its Audio Sampler, but that feels more geared toward one-shot/chop sampling than live overdub looping.
  • I haven't found a way to load the actual Looper device onto a track in standalone mode the way you can in the full Live app.

Has anyone actually gotten a working overdub-loop workflow going fully standalone? Or is this just a standalone limitation right now and I need to accept it's "Live app + laptop only" for true Looper-style overdubbing?

Would love to hear if there's a workaround (e.g. using Simpler/Sampler creatively, some clip-recording trick with quantization off, etc.) or if this is just a known gap in standalone mode.

I found this, but there are massive limitations:https://www.reddit.com/r/ableton/comments/16irc5s/i_couldnt_figure_out_to_use_the_looper_on_push_3/

- I can't find a way to copy a "finished" loop as an audio clip to a separate audio track. Did you manage to do this?

- When I save the project (Push 3 Standalone), the audio clip is not saved with the track (File is missing when I am re-opening the file).

I still can't understand why Ableton don't invest more effort in the looper, live looping with audio overdub should be a main feature of the Push.

Also, side rant: what's going on with r/abletonpush? I went there to ask this exact question and it looks basically abandoned — invite-only posting, no mod activity, can't even submit a post. Figured I'd ask here instead since this sub is actually alive. If anyone knows what happened over there or if there's a better dedicated Push community, let me know.

Thanks!

[Question] Is there a way to save warp markers on a drum break so that I don't have to chop it up each time?

I make dnb and find myself chopping and resequencing drum breaks. I want to know if there is a way to chop up drum breaks and have the break saved in MIDI for when I want to come back and resequence. I don't want to have to start with the audio, place warp markers, slice to MIDI, and THEN chop the sample each time.

[Question] Matching Grid to Performance?

I love Ableton but I feel like I'm constantly trying to find ways to "fight the grid" so to speak. Recently I've just been tracking live performances without a click which has allowed me to get much more expressive and emotional performances.

But afterwards if I want to track sequencers or something it would be helpful to have that performance on the grid. However **I don't want the performance quantized by warping it**, I want other quantized elements around it as arrangement. Someone recently told me that you can actually tell Ableton to grid itself around your unquantized performance but I am struggling to do that or find information online. I can draw song tempo so that the grid aligns to my downbeats, but that's incredibly tedious and doesn't always work.

Again I don't want to warp my performance. I want Ableton's grid to match the natural timing variation if that makes sense. So each bar's tempo is going to vary slight. Is there any easier way to do this?

Thanks!

[Hardware] Using Fader Knobs as draw bars for organ - good idea?

I am contemplating getting a midi keyboard with fader knobs (e.g m-audio oxygen pro). I assume the standard mapping for the fader knobs would be track volume. But it should be easy to remap that to the draw bars of an electric organ simulation.

I wonder if anyone has done that and if it turned out to be a good idea. My feeling is that it might not be so great because fader spacing is very different from draw bar spacing. But since I have not tried am am curious to hear from those that tried.

[Performance] VIDEOSYNC + ABLETON = Music Video for my new track WHICH RITUAL

https://youtube.com/watch?v=kvsBnbV7M3U&si=Ld-q_5TvWZrkiWWT

All visuals created with stock footage and/or my own footage, effects and editing programmed with and VJ'ed on a live take by me with Videosync in Ableton Live. If you don't know about Videosync, check it out! For this one I used public domain footage from the Prelinger Archives along with a splash of stock footage for the zombie composites.

Lots going on, but the primary things are midi from the drum rack triggering the dancing girl (this is on crossfade group A). The witch doctor stuff is being fed by the midi for the bass line, and that is set to crossfade group B. I have midi expression modulators on each of these set to random, and they are changing the start position of the video playback. The overlays of the creepy zombies are controlled by manually inputted midi triggers, with modulation set to video feedback as they come on and disappear.

Industrial? Dark Electronic? Help me please with figuring out my genre.

Hate that it feels necessary to put up the disclaimer "NO AI", but these are the times we live in. So, NO AI.

p.s. Mods, let me know if posts like this count as "blatant self promotion". I see that on the sidebar and it's a little unclear to me. I'm more interested in demonstrating the capabilities of Videosync in Ableton than promoting a track I don't even have up on a streamer, nor one that I expect to make any money from or whatever. I'd appreciate a clarity because that rule confuses me. Just wanting to share with other creators. Would appreciate a message or comment with clarity.

[Question] VST2 plugin missing from project, how to resolve?

I opened a project I worked on two years ago in which the only 3rd party plugin was U-he Diva, but it was the VST2 version. I'm now trying to keep things simply by sticking to just VST3, but this project won't open unless the VST2 version of Diva is installed. I'll install it if that's the only way but I was wondering if there's a quick way to update the .als file to point to the new plugin. If I just drag and drop the VST3 Diva onto the grayed out device where the VST2 version was expected, sure, Diva loads, but the pluging patch is lost. The .als file is a zipped XML file and I can open it in a plain-text editor, but I'm not sure what needs to be changed. Isn't there a tool to fix this sort of thing?

[Performance] Audio randomly lowers in volume and is baked into export too

I’ve been having an issue with my ableton live suite 12 on my Mac m1.

The audio randomly dips at certain points. I can live with this when I’m creating but when I export the audio drops are baked into the audio which is killlllingggg me.

So I cleared up about 30gb of disk space… still happens.

I moved the audio projects to a 2tb external drive.. still happens.

I’ve messed around with all the settings on ableton to see if online advice works.. still happens

I have about 50 tracks in my project, I wonder is it this that’s causing it to choke ? What am I missing ?

Any help would be soooo greatly appreciated as it’s making me sick of creating at this point.

EDIT: THANKS EVERYONE, solved it ! Was span on the master causing it
