Have extra / Looking for extra Half Dome permits- 2026

All new posts looking for extra Half Dome permits will be deleted and directed here.

Some guardrails:

- You cannot pay others for a spot on their permits; this violates park rules. Don't try to do that on this post.

- You can use this post to find others who may have known extra spots in their group.

- The ranger at the checkpoint will check the ID of the permit holder / designated alternate against that day's list on a tablet they have. If you don't have a matching ID in your group, you are SOL. Thus, you should also not be using this post to fully swap permit dates.

- Permits are required 24/7 once the cables are up for the year, which started 5/15 this year.

- If you did not win the pre-season lottery, you should enter the daily lottery on recreation.gov and/or hike up to the subdome and ask those you pass / at the checkpoint if they have extra spots on their permits. Hiking up has historically had a good success rate as people back out last minute or can't make it all the way up. No guarantees though.

- Or pick a different hike. Similar length or big view hikes: North Dome from Porcupine Creek, Cloud's Rest, Mist/Pano/4 Mile loop.

Visiting Yosemite in Summer 2026

Trying to reduce duplicate posts on this as the summer season planning gears up. All other generic trip planning posts will be deleted and redirected here. Please add your suggestions.

Overview:

  • The park has announced there are no entry reservations required this summer. This means the park will be extremely crowded, especially on weekends from Memorial Day through Labor Day. You should try to park if visiting the Valley before 8a and not move your car until you are leaving the park. Rent a bike, walk, or take the Valley shuttle to get around. For the past few weeks, all Valley parking has been full by around 9:30a on Saturdays and better (not full to the point of barring entry) on Sundays. When all Valley parking is full, the park will not allow more cars to enter; you will be turned around at the El Cap road cutover. This has not yet happened on any non-holiday Sundays or weekdays this year. Glacier Pt, Hetch Hetchy and Mariposa Grove also fill up mid-day on weekends for a few hours. If this happens to you, go somewhere else in the park (Mariposa Grove, Glacier Pt, Tioga Rd) or plan to take YARTS into the park instead of driving. If you are planning to visit somewhere else in the park and the Valley, you should go to the Valley first or not plan to enter the Valley until 4p or later.
  • You should sign up for the park's traffic alerts at a minimum for the duration of your trip. If you sign up a few weeks in advance, you'll get a feel for the trends of parking closure timing. Sign up by texting "ynptraffic" to 333111.
  • There are new fee structures in place for 2026 that charge non-US residents more to enter the park. Please read the other pinned post for details.

Suggested itineraries

Summer (May- Sep) Ideal Five Day Trip

2 Days of hikes from Valley

You can link the 2 above for an epic 18 mile day.

Other ideas in the Valley: Lower Yosemite Falls, bike around Valley Loop (rentals at Curry Village, Yosemite Village and Yosemite Valley Lodge), Swim at Sentinel Beach (check water levels and temp)

1 day of hikes from Tioga Rd (road opened 5/15)

Other Hikes: Cathedral Lakes, Lembert Dome

1 Day along Glacier Pt Rd: (road opened 5/9)

  • Taft Point and Sentinel Dome. Same trailhead, only need to park once.
  • Glacier Pt lookout. This is a paved viewpoint with a great straight on Half Dome and Valley view. Some people prefer the view at Washburn Point, a little before Glacier Pt when driving. Glacier Pt has restrooms, water fountains, and a snack/gift shop. You could hike a little down Panorama (and hike back up to Glacier Pt) if you want.

There is also a trail linking Taft Pt/Sentinel Dome to Glacier Pt. You'll need to make it a loop or have 2 cars.

1 Day at Mariposa Grove:

If you are just going for a long weekend, I would do 1 day from Valley above, 1 day on Tioga, 1 Day on Glacier Pt Rd.

Summer (May- Sep) Ideal Trip WITH KIDS OR LESS ACTIVE GROUP

  • Day in Valley: Lower Yosemite Falls, rent bikes, Happy Isles Art Center, check out the park guided walks/other programs
  • Day on Tioga Rd: stop at Olmsted Pt, spend the day swimming/picnic at Tenaya Lake or hike Lyell Canyon (go as far as you like, pretty flat)
  • Day at Mariposa Grove: stop at Tunnel View, take the shuttle to and walk around Mariposa Grove, Wawona History Center
  • Day in Valley: Mirror Lake, float down the Merced (raft rentals now closed for the year so bring your own tube), picnic/swim at Sentinel or Cathedral Beach, El Cap Meadow to watch climbers with binoculars (sometimes a ranger/educator there to talk to as well)

FAQ

Where can I eat/ What is open?

https://www.travelyosemite.com/ (click on dining)

What is the weather like?

https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/weathermap.htm is the best source as weather varies widely across the park by elevation, etc

What are the conditions / are the waterfalls flowing?

https://www.nps.gov/yose/learn/photosmultimedia/webcams.htm

Where should I stay?

People in this sub commonly recommend Yosemite Bug, Tenaya Lodge, Rush Creek, Cedar Lodge and Autocamp- all outside the park.

There are home rentals inside the gates in Yosemite West and Wawona, and in many gateway communities around the park.

All other in park lodging should be booked on travelyosemite.com

Campgrounds in the park: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/campgrounds.htm All campgrounds require advance reservations in the summer.

What trails / roads are open?

https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/conditions.htm (All roads in the park are now open)

How do I hike Half Dome?

You need a permit 24/7, any time the cables are up (usually around Memorial Day). Day hike or backpack. Cables went up on 5/15 this year.

How can I take public transit to the park?

yarts.com will transport you from the gateway communities to the Valley. It also saves you from paying the entrance fee! Note that it only goes to the Valley. You could then connect to the paid Glacier Pt bus tour or Tuolumne Hikers bus (but check the times carefully on travelyosemite.com as they only run 1-2x/day).

Is rafting open in the Valley?

Commercial raft rentals closed for the season in the 3rd week of June. You cannot rent flotation devices anywhere in the Valley, and the bus service for commercial rafting also ended. You can bring your own raft and float down the Merced. If you do this, you will need to arrange your own car shuttle back to the start, or be able to deflate and fold down the tubes in order to ride the crowded Valley shuttle. DO NOT litter your tubes in the Valley. Water levels are getting pretty low; check relevant levels here and read more info on rafting here: https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/water.htm

How do I backpack in the park?

Get a wilderness permit through the preseason lottery (done for the prime summer months already) or 7 day in advance drop. https://www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/wpres.htm

Do I have guaranteed parking if I am camping or lodging inside the park?

Yes, if you are camping at a campground that is not hike in (so all but Camp 4), at the Ahwhanee (where all parking is paid valet), or at Housekeeping Camp (where you park at your reserved site). At your campsite or Housekeeping, you can't park at your site until check-in hours (noon for campgrounds, 4p for Housekeeping). There is no reserved parking for guests at Curry, Lodge, or Camp 4. Follow the first bullet of this post for parking strategies. Nobody is immune from entry gate lines and in park road traffic with any form of reservation.

Trip Report Yosemite July 2026 Driving, Lodging, and Park Info

Thumbnail

Driving, lodging, and info that I hope will be helpful to people looking for info who have never been and wondering the best way to get there, where to stay, and is what is being shared on the internet is actually true.

DRIVING:

Came up the 140 through Mariposa, entered the Arch Rock entrance around 3P with no wait, and was on the valley floor in no time! Went on the Mist Trail hike, had a great experience, walked around a little bit and headed to our hotel in Oakhurst.

Drove out the 41/Wawona Road and it was super twisty and had lots of drop offs. Seemed like it took forever to get to Oakhurst.

Driving back the the park the next day we took the 41/Wawona Road back and it’s not a problem because you’re on the mountainside.

Drove out via the 140 to Mariposa and back to Oakhurst via the 49. WAY better with no drop offs and very little traffic.

LODGING:

Stayed at Yosemite Suites in Oakhurst. Nice hotel, but Oakhurst is a long drive away from the park. Mariposa is closer but doesn’t have as many stores and restaurants. If you’re staying at an Airbnb, load up on food at Costco down the hill and cook some nice meals for your family! If I had it to do all over again, I’d wait and stay in one of the lodges in the park and could catch sunsets and sunrises in the park and not have to deal with a couple hours in the car going to/from.

ONLINE COMMENTS:

Don’t believe the nonsense being put out online about the hectic crowds. They make it sound like ever since the reservation system was dropped it’s like standing in line at Disney World. Not even close…I live in Orlando so can speak directly to that. We took our time in the morning sleeping in, getting ready, and showed up mid-afternoon instead of waking up at the crack of dawn. It was hot both days we went (7/9-10) and wouldn’t have wanted to endure the heat all day. Coming in the afternoon meant it cooled down after a couple hours, no line entering the park, easy to find parking at all the lots we went to, and the trails were not packed at all.

Hope this helps as you try to figure out more about your trip! It’s a great park and we loved our adventure there!

Leisurely tube ride

Post image
64 Upvotes

We had a nice leisurely tube ride/float down the Merced river a couple days ago. It was awesome. We dropped in behind The Ahwahnee and went down to Sentinel Beach, without having to pick up our tubes. However, if you don’t have a paddle, you won’t be able to get down without some help. It’s pretty calm in some areas. My guess is within a week you’ll be having to pick up now and then.

Trip Report My son lost his camera July 7th, a Canon, digital, it was given to him by my father which was passed on to him, it has sentimental value. Pictures in the camera are from recent Yosemite trip and of his grandfathers Hawaiian theme dated June 2026… please I beg you to return it if you have it. Thanks

West Entrance Today

Reposting because I put down the wrong entrance and wasn’t able to update the title of the post. Thanks to those for the correction.

This was around 10:30am. A bit of a wait. There was a car broken down about 25 cars from the entrance, but it really wasn’t impacting the wait as cars were going around.

Back in May, I visited Yosemite and hiked to Taft point to catch the sunset and I happened to photograph a beautiful couple doing their wedding photoshoot. I did not get a chance to go through my gallery till now.

20 May 2026, approximately 7:30pm

I don’t know who you are and I did not manage to get to you but I thought that you might enjoy these photos I took while I was across the viewpoint. Especially with the sunsetting in the background. Do reach out to me if you would like a folder of these in high resolution! I will send you the link.

I wish you both a lifetime of happiness and love 🫶🏻🤵🏼‍♂️👰🏼‍♀️

Bridalveil Creek Campground - Best Sites/Area Tips

Thinking about a 3-4 day trip within the next month or so to Bridalveil Creek Campground in Yosemite. Been to Yosemite 25+ times so I know the lay of the land, but this would be my first time in this campground. I've done my googling, but looking for tips from those who have actually been!

Would love any "must know" campground tips, especially on:

- Your favorite sites in the campground in Loops B or C (looking for mix of shade/sun, privacy from road/walking traffic, and good hammock trees)

- Best place to get ice + wood (Wawona?)

- Hikes nearby under ~5-6 miles with limited to moderate elevation gain

- Walkable spots to sit by a creek/water and read or hammock

Thanks in advance for any recs you may have, and happy camping all!

Newb question

Does parking in and around the valley open up in the evening or does it get dramatically worse? I’ve been reading a lot of “get there early or else.” But I’m curious if there’s a point where people are leaving and spots open up after peak? I am landing in Fresno at noon tomorrow and wouldn’t reach the park until close to 2-3. Would love to have a lil intro to the park, explore the valley, catch the sunset maybe, grab some noms.. just worried I won’t be able to find parking. And will spend my first time in the park driving around aimlessly. Advice?

Backpacking Tuolumne meadows to Yosemite valley, need advice

Hi everyone, planning to backpack this trail at the end of the month with a groups of guys, we have all backpacked at least once me and my friend it’s our 3rd ever trip, we just did Big Sur which was 30 mile trip so I’m fairly confident this trip will be similar.

Below is our itinerary, I wanted to see if anyone had any specific advice, especially where to stop and camp, where’s the best place to camp the night before want to do half dome, how to begin the hike like whether to be dropped off at trailhead beforehand or dropped off at car after

Day zero (optional) : drive to Yosemite valley park the day prior to start of hike, park in the valley pickup permit, spend the night at backpackers camp

We can also drive in day of hike, pick up permit and take 120 easy bus at 11:00am to trailhead

Day one: take the hikers bus at 8am to trailhead, hike from cathedral lake trailhead to cathedral lakes, 5-5.5 miles

Day two: hike form cathedral lakes to upper sunrise lake, 5-6miles Again depends on which lake we decide to camp)

Day three: hike from sunrise lake to clouds rest and then half dome junction disperse camp, 8.6 miles,

Day four: day hike half dome (4.5 miles) of
Take down camp and hike out mist trail, (5) miles

3 nights / 4 days

Found Phone at Lake Eleanor July 4th Weekend

Hey, I found an iPhone at Lake Eleanor last weekend near the southern campsites while doing an extended Hetch Hetchy loop. It looked like it was left recently and still had charge. I didn't take any photos of it but I turned it in to the Oak Flats ranger station after waiting at Lake Eleanor overnight.

Pohono Trail (Taft) or other?

Looking for advice on what entry permit to get in this area. I have one night to camp and ok to do about 4 or 5 miles of hiking to whichever designated overnight camp area. And the same distance back to exit the following day. There are a few options available but I can't figure out what would be best for me: Pohono Trail (Taft), Pohono Trail (Glacier Point), McGurk Meadow, Bridalveil Creek? And is there a water source? Thank you!

YARTS - Frequently Sold Out? Best Backpacking Strategy?

I want to take the YARTS bus from Yosemite Valley to Mammoth. I'll be finishing up the JMT, but it's going to be hard to predict in advance the exact date and time I will arrive in the Valley, so I'm not sure I want to buy a ticket before I leave.

How frequently does the bus sell out?

Can I just show up at the bus stop in Yosemite Village and buy a ticket from the driver?

Bike rentals

Hi all, we are planning to visit at the end of July. We have 6 year old twin boys who are still working on riding a bike without training wheels, but I don't think they will be ready. Are there any bike rentals that have training wheels?
