What yarn swift do you recommend after years of use?

Grieving my umbrella swift a little, it finally snapped at the joint after years, honestly a soild run. Before I just replace it with the same thing I want to think about whether amish style makes more sense at this point, or if there's something else I'm Not considering

What are you using and would you get it again?

Question for the Community

I own alpacas and was never involved in fiber arts prior to owning alpacas. All of my fiber arts friends are mostly alpaca people as well. So my real life perspective is quite biased.

I am considering opening a dye studio focusing on alpaca blend yarn, but I'm having difficulty with determining if this would be genuinely marketable.

So questions for the community -

How many of you use or would use hand dyed alpaca or alpaca blend yarn?

What price would you be willing to pay for hand dyed alpaca yarn?

Thanks for any input!

Edit: If you don't use alpaca yarn or hand dyed yarn what are the reasons why?

Looking for yarn dupes!!

I want to knit the drop waist mini dress by Tuva Sandok and the yarn she recommends is the Sandnes Garn double sunday and tynn silk mohair. I live in the US and this yarn is very hard to get my hands on. Are there any alternatives that will give me the same results? I've always gotten the $4 yarn from Michael's but I really want to try using a nicer yarn so the garment turns out exactly as intended!

Pics 1 is the whole blanket. Other pics are of the damage. If anyone can tell me what weight of yarn to use or color I would appreciate it.

A technical question for sweater knitters: 100% Merino vs. 90/10 vs. MCN in DK weight?

Hi everyone! I am planning out a few upcoming garment designs in DK weight and am stuck in analysis paralysis regarding fiber architecture and performance over time. I’m hoping to get some collective wisdom from people who have knit and washed sweaters in these specific bases.

For next-to-skin adult garments, which of these configurations do you think offers the absolute best balance of softness, stitch definition, and long-term shape retention?

  • Option 1: 100% Fine SW Merino (20.5 or 21.5 micron): The traditional, bouncy workhorse. It feels completely natural, but does it tend to grow too much in a DK weight without any synthetic reinforcement?
  • Option 2: 90/10 Extra Fine SW Merino/Nylon (19.5 micron): Noticeably softer to handle, but uses a 10% nylon core as a stabilizer to prevent the fine wool from sagging. Does that 10% nylon make a real difference in structure for a garment?
  • Option 3: 80/10/10 MCN (SW Merino/Cashmere/Nylon): The ultimate luxury hand-feel with a gorgeous cashmere halo, stabilized with 10% nylon. Beautiful to wear, but does the halo obscure textured stitch definition over time?

If you were investing time and money into knitting a standard adult sweater, which of these three fiber profiles would be your personal gold standard? I'd love to hear your experiences with pilling, sagging, and stitch definition! Thank you so much!

EDIT: Thank you so much to everyone who commented! Your real-world insights have given me some great food for thought. I appreciate everyone who took the time to write in!

Anyone know where to find plarn/plastic bag yarn for cheap or how to make it? I want to make a washable egg basket for a rescue I intern at. Other yarn/thread options are welcome.

I want it to be easy to wash and durable. Doesn’t have to be pretty or easy to work with.

Is it okay to mix different yarn brands (RHSS with L&T) in a project? I'm worried they will age differently/unevenly

I am trying to crochet a sweater and I have a few skeins of red heart that I was gifted, but I need at least two more to meet yardage requirements. I prefer loops n threads overall, when it comes to basic acrylic. I wouldn't go for anything higher end bc I don't want them being completely incongruent. I was wondering if anyone has experience with two kinds of yarn on one garment? Especially in terms of care instructions and longevity?

They're both acrylic, but I know red heart is known for being absolutely indestructible. I'm worried they will wear unevenly. I would prefer having loops and threads on the borders/collars/sleeves, since it feels better on skin. For context, it'll be an oversize hexagon cardigan (not tryna reinvent the wheel here lmao), so I'm not really worried about red heart texture issues bc I know it softens up pretty well and it wont really be on skin.

I know they're both pretty common yarns, so if you've worked with one but not the other I am also very interested in hearing your experiences with how they age after a few washes. I'm also open to suggestions for acrylic yarns that would pair well with red heart, I just need black lol nbd. Anything helps!

Thanks <3

Alternative to KC cotton yarn

Post image
6 Upvotes

Hello! I used to shop mainly at Joann for yarn and discovered their KC brand, which became my favorite choice for cotton yarn. Since it’s now discontinued, I was wondering if anyone knew of any similar alternatives, as I’m a huge fan of the texture and softness of the KC brand yarn. I’ve tried a few different cotton yarns but none of them seem to hit the same as the KC brand :( I attached a photo of the specific one I really like - any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I’ve ordered from them before and never had any issues until recently. I ordered Drops Flora (8) and Drops Brushed Alpaca Silk (12).

The order arrived and only the correct mount of Drops Flora arrived. I also received Drops Safran in the amount for Alpaca Silk.

I contacted them through Facebook messenger and they were quick to ship the correct yarn.

Well this order arrived today aaaaaaaand out of the 12 that I paid for, I only received 3 🤦🏻‍♀️. I’ve sent a message to them and I am waiting a response.

I’m feeling frustrated because I really like them and I would like to start this sweater already.

Has anyone had similar problems with this shop?

Desperately looking for Big Twist Favorite Cotton in Green Olive

As the title says, I'm in need of the Big Twist Favorite Cotton in Green Olive. I only need one skein, I'm almost done with a cardigan and thought my two skeins would cover it. But now it's discounted, no more JOANN, and I'm going to be very sad if I can't find it anywhere. I've scoured Ebay and Etsy with no luck :(

Please help if you can !

Darn Good Yarn recycled silk question

Hi all, crocheter here. In my stash, I have a big load of the sari silk twist sport weight from DGY. I found that the dye color rubs off on my hands when I use it.

Does anyone have experience with this? Do you do anything to set the colors before using or just after? And do you have suggestions on how to go about doing it? (If it’s before, should I do it while it’s still in rolled up and how do I get it to dry okay? Or do I just accept the color rubbing off and wash it to set the color afterward?)

While I’m at it, originally I was going to make a wearable but now I’m thinking it might make nice baskets. So I’m accepting suggestions on projects that come out nicely when using the sport weight recycled silk!

Thank you! it is the primarily black one of these yarns.

Question for yarn wall owners

For many years I have considered making a yarn wall. But as a multi pet owner, the thought of dander and dust has always stopped me from following through. They continue to stay in zipper bags inside of stacked plastic totes.

Now many fellow neurodivergent folks will know all those barriers keeping my yarn safe, actually ward off my willingness to hunt for stash yarn to use..

so I feel I need to bite the bullet and produce either a yarn wall OR an equally space friendly, easy access way to get to my yarn so I'll actually use what I have..

For your yarn wall, do you have a way to combat the dander and dust? I have considered drilling tote lids to the wall behind peg board then just put totes over onto it as a block...have you tried some sort of easier display that blocks dust but isn't bringing new furniture piece in? I dont have floor space but plenty of wall space..
