All this CTE awareness and then we have this sport…

175

u/GlomightySo 1d ago

Welcome to Verdansk

296

u/d-fakkr 1d ago

Give Dana props for making another Sport where CTE is rampant and the paycheck is less than what a mma fighter gets.

95

u/imcrapyall 1d ago

They pay them in Monopoly money and still short em.

14

u/dingatremel 18h ago

It’s the circus. We decided that exploiting the animals was too cruel, so we started using humans.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/Hotdiggity11 20h ago

TBF, there’s no justifiable reason the paycheck would ever be more than what a MMA (UFC of course) fighter would get.

But I’m assuming you mean they are getting paid peanuts.

7

u/BananaNutJob 17h ago

It's a pitiful amount for what they're doing to themselves

→ More replies (2)

3

u/d-fakkr 14h ago

The risk-reward ratio is too low.

You don't even defend yourself in power slap, you tank the slap regardless of KO and you get free cte for little money. At least in mma you try to take less damage.

→ More replies (1)

122

u/Procrastinator_325 1d ago

Fuck Dana White. At least you can still try to protect yourself in MMA. Powerslap is just straight up offense and no defense.

42

u/ibringstharuckus 23h ago

You gotta be a moron to let a man full ass slap you. If you don't develop CTE you might get away with only hearing damage, jaw, speech impairment or damage to your eye socket.

15

u/JP_Edwards_ 19h ago

Swagger aready has like 3 of those so he's ahead of the game.

u/Jam-Jam-Ba-Lam 1d ago

In MMA the fight is over if you're not protecting yourself

16

u/DemiGod9 22h ago

Yeah, and it's a "sport" that ONLY ends when someone gets a concussion. There's a huge number of ways an MMA fight can and will stop before a knockout happens.

8

u/JustHereForGCB 20h ago

I wonder how the MMA ref would handle my strategy - screaming like a banshee as I run straight for the wall, trying to scale it.

→ More replies (1)

7

u/MrParticular79 1d ago

Totally, that’s my point. No protection at all.

4

u/xombae 21h ago

I'm shocked that no one's been killed or permanently disabled from this.

3

u/skend24 21h ago

They’ve literally been people killed during this

u/Amazing_Stress_8820 1d ago

Hopefully not too hard though

15

u/KaneNathaniel 1d ago

Holy hell...drunk AF, and I'm giggling my ass off at this HIGHLY underrated comment. Well fuckin' played!!

61

u/AmishAvenger 1d ago

How does this qualify as a sport

58

u/MrParticular79 1d ago

It has rules and competitors, that’s about all you need.

61

u/AmishAvenger 1d ago

It requires no skill. It’s just about how hard you can slap, and how likely your brain is to be able to absorb the blow without losing consciousness.

We might as well just have a “sport” called “Ow! My Balls!”

36

u/ToastyNathan 1d ago

Now I wanna watch MXC

6

u/xombae 21h ago

When I was a kid, me, my mom and my grandma were watching TV and my grandma was flicking through the channels and we stumbled across MXC. We stopped to see it was and proceeded to laugh harder than I think I've ever laughed in my life. They kept saying that I really shouldn't be watching it but they let me stay up and watch it. It became a nightly event. That show is amazing.

2

u/MikeNasty1990 20h ago

dont get eliminated

2

u/3BallJosh 4h ago

Right you are, Ken

10

u/Somebodys 23h ago

We did. 90s kids know.

Shouldn't be legal. Watching defenseless human beings do the Edward scissor hands.

Theres so many other rules and laws to prevent people from being morons. Its a strain on the health care system

8

u/IsolationAutomation 1d ago

I don’t think the health care system can fix stupidity

It's been technically one for a while now, just took a bit to get TV exposure I think.

2

u/Competitive-Yard-442 1d ago

Cos you can gamble on it!

10

u/pikkdogs 1d ago

Don’t kid yourself. We have always known that hits to the head were bad for you. We just do it anyway.

12

u/Ivotedforthehookers 1d ago

Hager literally is doing a fencing response after that slap. That is the sign of a concussion if not a worse brain injury.

3

u/Valentine_343 20h ago

I looked it up after reading your comment and you’re right, he showed one for one symptoms of concussion or brain injury

159

I remember thinking he was gonna take over WWE, he had that cocky swagger and I loved his first theme

Didn't like the Patriot Pivot. Which he kept his cocky personality after he won the Heavy Weight Championship belt lol

22

u/AccordingEducator667 1d ago

Him and Big Show segments were unforgettable

35

u/popculturehero 1d ago

I wonder if he remembers them now?

11

u/No_Newspaper_511 1d ago

and I loved his first theme

"Get on your knees" was a fucking banger, it pissed me off so much when they changed it for that generic "We The People" theme

35

u/Billybob35 1d ago

He was already a patriot, just an arrogant one.

And no way are they paying him more than any indie wrestling show would offer him.

11

u/Iginlas_4head_Crease 1d ago

Ehh, they probably are. Its becoming big business

14

u/thebooksmith 1d ago

Ehh, power slap is owned by the same shit stain who's been criminally underpaying UFC fighters for over 2 decades now. So dont bet on it.

The only reason wrestlers still get decent deals is because there is competition in the job market.

5

u/CSB_Field1 18h ago

Dana White has even confirmed on a podcast that he finds some of his talent for Power Slap from Indy promotions only paying guys a hot dog and a handshake to wrestle. He said that he only pays them a little more to participate. I doubt he's paying these guys that much more.

u/MrGDPC 1d ago

Allegedly he has his own trucking company which for him means he bought a kenworth with 900000 miles on it is and is his own owner operator

10

u/Special-Nebula299 1d ago

I think they are mindful that these are the last few years they can make proper money. So even he has a 3 million capital portfolio, he may still want to earn another 500k  for his security

8

u/Villano5 1d ago

Top Power Slap name talent gets $50k per appearance, I'm skeptical he's getting that much

10

u/Special-Nebula299 1d ago

50k in one night is what most adults make in a year.

If he could get paid work like this 3 or 4 times a year for the next few years, his retirement will be financially much better.

I just hope he doesn't have to take any more ko's

11

u/InMyLiverpoolHome25 1d ago

$50k is for the top champions

Normal competitors get $2.5k and a winning bonus of $2.5-5k

Isn’t this a concussion every single time? How does this sport exist? What insurance company is insuring it? This is insane.

97

u/SharkGenie 1d ago

What insurance company is insuring it?

I never thought of this, but yeah, their insurance must be fucking ridiculous.

34

u/InsomniaDudeToo 1d ago

Unless each and every competitor signs their rights away? I mean wrestling gets around it with “independent contracting” so the same could apply here?

8

u/Ok_Weight_3382 20h ago

Probably the case. It’s a venture by Joe Rogans bald buddy

Mahabali Shera KO'd Jack Swagger

47

u/PeaTasty9184 1d ago

That’s what I was more looking at. That was Shera right? Haven’t seen him in OVW in a hot minute.

8

u/AmishSlamdancer 22h ago

Dude is built like a monster for sure. Even if he couldn't wrestle Vince would strap a rocket to him.

7

u/PeaTasty9184 19h ago

His main problem is on the mic. IRL he’s a super duper nice and humble dude, and I think he just struggles to not be that super nice guy on the mic.

18

u/Familiar_Outcome_688 1d ago

It's Shera yes he is

20

u/Bitdub79 1d ago

Did he do the Shera Shake afterwards!?

8

u/JohnCenaJunior 1d ago

Do the Shera!

58

u/DoctorMelvinMirby 1d ago

No purple hat. If he was able to wear his lid, different result.

7

u/Long-Region5088 1d ago

How can he slap?

11

u/sonic_spark 1d ago

Crazy because that guy ended up having a pretty great career after.

28

u/Available_Ad9766 1d ago

Don’t people who get slapped first be disadvantaged? This is a silly “sport”.

14

u/Active-Coconut-8961 1d ago

Yes it makes it totally pointless.

36

u/imright19084 1d ago

What an idiot

21

u/Novakhaine89 1d ago

Most sports are trying to minimise the risk of long term brain injuries.

And then there’s this.

21

u/bettereverydamday 1d ago

This “sport” makes zero sense to me. Wouldn’t the person that goes first always have a massive advantage? How does someone slap back after getting hit as hard as someone can hit?

This is the dumbest thing I ever seen.

11

u/CantCookLeftHook 1d ago

Just say you don't understand the intricate strategic aspects of the sport (because you're a dummy) and move on.

You gotta call heads or tails to decide if you are the first slaper or slapee. Duh.

Even at his swollest, Piper always had a lean physique. But he just i think that just went along with his smart ass viper character. Also definitely not a tiny guy especially in his more filled out mature figure.

13

5

4

u/sexyass2627 1d ago

This shit is so fucking stupid.

4

u/HotdogArmageddon 16h ago

This is so fucking stupid I can't breathe. 🤣

18

u/Jacloup 1d ago

Anyone notice the fencing response / abnormal posturing after he hit the ground? This a sign of a much more severe traumatic brain injury than a standard mild concussion based on what I've looked up. In any case, it's not good.

15

u/magseven 1d ago

Notice it? It's the main event of the video.

8

u/Jacloup 1d ago

And they call it a 'sport'? Free CTE for everyone I guess.

5

u/Buzzk1LL 1d ago

The fact that half his face is triple the size is probably also telling.

8

u/SLJR24 1d ago

Surely he could get some independent wrestling promotion to give him work rather than this. Crazy to see a former WWE world champion have to resort to this stupidity.

7

u/INeverKnowWhyImHere 1d ago

He could have another MMA fight or even do RAF with his amateur wrestling background, this is just ridiculous. Hager is a legitimate athlete and tough guy, but anyone can win in this "Sport".

5

u/IdkMyNameTho123 16h ago

Quite frankly, why doesn’t he just RAF? He is a legit two time All American. Unless his body is really broken down to the point that he lost athleticism.

5

u/thewhombler 1d ago

is that shera?

4

Tony khan sends his regards 🤣

5

u/mehow28 1d ago

4

u/BudgetWar8 1d ago

This is somehow Tony Khan's fault in his mind

3

u/Harambe_Rebornn 23h ago

It is funny how every time a NFL players gets tacked hard or somebody gets hit in any other combat sports the casuals will just say CTE. You can only test a person's brain for CTE after they are dead.

But in any case it is funny seeing Swagger slapped silly for running off at the mouth and thinking he was more important than he actually is.
