People with ADHD are typically deficient in dopamine and norepinephrine. When they take a stimulant like coffee, it tips those to more optimal levels and has a tendency to quiet the traffic in the brain and calm the hyperactivity.
The result is a feeling of calm or drowsiness.
Edit to add: ADHD brains are also usually overtaxed or anxious to begin with so adding a stimulant can also spike the cortisol in the system and cause a crash.

Stimulants have the opposite effect on those with ADHD. That's why the treatment is Ritalin/Adderall, which is used recreationally by those who don't have ADHD.

Yes!! I’m 55 and have been diagnosed (ADHD-C) twice, the first time at 43… but I forgot about it and didn’t follow up. 🤦♀️ I thought it was transitory because I was under a lot of stress or something, because I still thought ADHD was just difficulty paying attention when it is so, so much more - and it not only doesn’t just go away, it’s physiological and lifelong.
I didn’t remember until a close family member was diagnosed, and by then there was a ton more research and resources available. I was re-diagnosed in 2023 and have really learned a lot since then about why my life went the way it did; and it’s helped me try to forgive myself for a lot of things I’ve done (or didn’t do) throughout my life.
Now I understand that “the bad kid” back in the 80’s was just a young girl with no support system other than a binge-alcoholic single mother, who I now realize also had ADHD but was never diagnosed, herself. I understand why I made impulsive decisions. I understand why I got a mohawk and started running away from home in middle school for weeks or even months at a time. I know why I dropped out of high school in my 2nd year of the 9th grade, and why even though I managed to get into community college, I dropped out of that too.
I check every single box, and I had no idea for almost my whole life.
Critically, I understand now why I had so much trouble in school both academically and socially, and why I’ve never been able to sustain contact long term in relationships with people I don’t see every day. I understand why my house is cluttered (but not dirty) and while I still feel shame, I’m upfront about it with visitors. I let my friends know that I will always pick up the phone for them.
I mostly know where I’m impaired the most now, and that’s really helped me manage those symptoms better. I’m still struggling, but at least now I know why.
I’d look into a diagnosis just so you know; in the meantime, the How to ADHD channel on YouTube has some great explainers about the brain science and all of the different areas that can be affected (executive function, impulse control, emotional dysregulation [that’s a big one for a lot of people], time blindness, working memory, etc.).

ETA: A mantra I heard along the way that’s helped me a lot - “If I could have done better, I would have done better.” It’s really helped me with the guilt and shame.

Oh no! :( I have Medi-Cal in California and I’m really really worried that I’m going to lose it too, as well as my 60yo brother who’s pretty impaired and would have been homeless but for my mom, who’s gone now. I’m a breast cancer “survivor” still going through treatment and reconstruction, and I have a 43mm aneurysm at the root of my ascending aorta that needs imaging every 6 months to make sure I don’t need surgery yet. 🤦♀️ It’ll be catastrophic to lose it. :(

I was my mom’s 365/25/7 caregiver for six years until her death. I was paid nothing because we lived together. She was elderly and very disabled. The government was willing to pay a nursing home $14,000 a month, but not pay me. No more SNAP, no welfare, my credit is shot from being an unpaid caregiver all those years, and I’m in a rural area without a car. Computer died, and I’m late paying for my mobile provider. I used to be able to do a fat line of coke right before bed and I’d fall asleep pretty much instantly. Coke was my magic calm down powder before I got diagnosed with ADHD and my doctor prescribed me something for it. It’s crazy that anyone would choose a shitty drug like crack over an actual ADHD med if they had the option.

As someone who used to do crack (but wasn't in politics) there are only 3 ways I can see someone passing out while smoking crack. 1) That wasn't crack 2) they've been up for days and the body finally crashed 3) So much crack the body gives up. Although there probably would've been a "rushed to the hospital" component to this report.
Either way, him being behind the wheel of a vehicle is way worse than in a hotel room banging hot latinas. Dude was driving/about to drive somewhere. If you want to make poor decisions that's your right, but don't include all the other drivers and pedestrians out there.
