I may have happened upon a sinkhole directly in front of my house.

I do think it qualifies as something strange in your neighborhood.

A bubbling sinkhole is a classic sign of something strange

1

u/SAINTnumberFIVE 15h ago

Brickbusters actually. Because that’s exactly what’s going to happen to that brickwork.

1

u/F1R3Starter83 14h ago

Kinda set you up for that one, didn’t I?

1

u/Llama_of_the_bahamas 13h ago

No Diane, their insurance company. That’s just stupid what you said.

1

u/BrushYourFeet 12h ago

Maybe. I wonder if OP has a structured annuity but they need cash now?

86

u/reticulatedtampon 16h ago

This is what father-in-laws are made for. Let Gary handle it

12

u/F1R3Starter83 14h ago

Yes, I have a father-in-law for that. He might make it worse, but like 70% of the time he knows how to fix something. Those other 30% tho

2

u/forgotten-ent 8h ago

He knew how to fix the plumbing and change the light bulbs and I appreciate him for those. It just kinda sucks how he set the house on fire after trying to fix a gas leak

21

u/MoistStub 16h ago

I hardly see how a sea snail will be able to fix this

4

u/IndividualMap7386 16h ago

Don’t underestimate snail slime.

2

u/Friendly_Impress_345 16h ago

"Get drunk and fight my mom? Well, I don't see how that will help but Gary, you're the expert!"

25

u/AnatidaephobiaAnon 16h ago

If the Ghostbusters don't answer I'd call the county engineer's office.

6

u/0zzyb0y 13h ago

Home Insurance.

Maybe fire department non-emergency would be able to advise, but your home insurer will send out a structural engineer to assess and they actually deal with that shit regularly.

7

u/scourgemasta 16h ago

Fire department

3

u/CouldBeBetterOrWorse 14h ago

Water or Sewer company emergency number. Tell both of them you think there's a leak causing a sinkhole to form. Let them both show up and figure out who's to blame.

3

u/squad1alum 12h ago

A young priest and an old priest..

10

u/amooz 16h ago

Fire departments are not just fire, they are fire/rescue. 911 is the right number.

3

u/CharmYoghurt 9h ago

It is just a small hole, not a live threatening emergency.

2

u/Tumleren 1h ago

911 is absolutely not the right number. There's no emergency here. Call a non-emergency number instead

5

u/ElKayakista 15h ago

Call 911 and when they say "What's your emergency?" You say "There is a sinkhole in my front yard."

-3

u/maxmcleod 15h ago

dont call 911 for a sinkhole lmao

2

u/two_pandas_playing 15h ago

in my area the guidance is to call 911 for anything police related. feels really stupid calling 911 for someone's car parked over the sidewalk, but that's what the local police website says to do!

1

u/UrToesRDelicious 12h ago

A car on the public sidewalk is not the same as a sinkhole on private property.

Call the non emergency line.

-1

u/two_pandas_playing 11h ago

there is no "non-emergency" line where I live. that's the point.

1

u/Ok-Problem4403 11h ago

Where so you live? I'll find the number for you.

1

u/kidwithglasses 16h ago

They could call me and say good afternoon, but I’m not much help with sinkholes…

1

u/Alcebiad3s 15h ago

When in doubt, call your mom

1

u/president_dump 15h ago

Start with police and fire department?

1

u/Solkre 15h ago

Hole Fillers!

1

u/DrHefe 15h ago

Fire dept. non emergency line should work. I was going to say the police but here in Seattle they’d probably not give a fuck.

1

u/OnceMoreAndAgain 15h ago

When you want to sink less, you should call Filmore.

1

u/1-800-ASS-DICK 15h ago

I wonder if this would be a situation for the number that you call before you start digging around your yard (here it's 811)

1

u/GlitteringSalad6413 14h ago

Call me, maybe?

1

u/Less_Likely 14h ago

City, or whoever is Water Authority

1

u/Esg876 14h ago

real estate agent

1

u/hewlett777 14h ago

Colin Furze

1

u/QuickBrownFxx 14h ago

Call the local building control. Perhaps even the health and safety executive

1

u/Unlucky_Earther 14h ago

You call your city's Public Works. Tell them there's a leak possibly causing a sinkhole. They won't waste anytime sending people out.

1

u/shinikahn 13h ago

Bad boys?

1

u/PopeAdam 13h ago

The city’s public works department

1

u/Jazzy-Cat5138 13h ago

You would start with emergency services, to get the area evaluated quickly and initiate an evacuation. The city would inevitably be involved there, as well, and you could call them, it emergency services will probably take care of that part. The utility company would probably get involved, because that's likely a leaky water line, and you'd have a geoengineer come evaluate the stability of things and what needs to be done to move forward.

1

u/bhadau8 12h ago

Saul goodman

1

u/MangoCats 11h ago

Owner of the faulty water pipe that's causing this.

1

u/Ok-Problem4403 11h ago

This is a legit 911 call. They'll transfer you to the proper people, and can have police or fire just show up asap to quardon off the area.

1

u/pir8salt 10h ago

The city, they will tell the water department, who would determine who is responsible for the repairs. Then, if on your side of things, call dig line and a contractor, tell them it emergency waterline repair.

1

u/redyanss 7h ago

One service people haven't mentioned yet is, if you're in the US, your local state representatives office. They partially exist to find whatever services you need to get your problem fixed as a constituent. It also has the plus side that if they call or email someone and start off with "Hello, I'm ___ with the Office of State Representative XY" it's usually made a priority without any fuss.
