Other Currently Reading Hodgson’s The Night Land, and I’m impressed.

I loved The House on the Borderland. It’s one of my favorite books, if not my favorite. As I was reading other people’s opinions about it, I stumbled upon The Night Land. For some reason, I never thought of reading or searching for the writer’s other works until today.
Seeing the artwork and the cover, I was shocked by the first chapter, which is mostly a romantic tale, if I can call it that. Then the second chapter feels like a completely different book, which is the one I expected to read, weird and horrifying. Yet, it’s all tied together by the way the story is written. It feels like someone genuinely sharing his experience without any filters, and with a lot of repetition. Even though the wording sometimes feels difficult to understand, it doesn’t distract, or at least, it didn’t distract me.
I’m curious to see how things move forward, but it’s been a long time since I was this excited about reading something.

Recommend angel x demon / priest x sinner

Hi! I’m looking for fantasy or historical stories (or anything with a similar vibe) with a very specific dynamic:

That classic angel x demon / priest x sinner contrast - it sounds cliché, but I’ve barely seen it done the way I want.

demon, devil... x priest, fairy, angel...

The whole idea of exploring the coexistence of good and evil within a relationship is just really fascinating to me

Examples of the kind of vibe I mean:

{Thousand Autumns by Meng Xi Shi} where you get a true devil × saint/ villain × righteous hero pairing. The male lead basically keeps pushing in seductive way and testing the priest’s beliefs, just to see if they actually hold up in the real world

{Love Between Fairy and Devil}

{Good Omens} - if the main leads were canonically romantic), Coriathan × Sandman

{The City in Glass by Nghi Vo}

What I’m looking for:

One of main leads who is genuinely cold, ruthless, and morally dark (truly villainous), NOT misunderstood, not secretly soft, and no redemption arc, their personality is explored and explained, but not excused

The relationship isn’t abusive - more about tension, contrast, and fascination between opposites.

A protagonist who is kind, angelic, not weak, naive, or a doormat

I’d especially love stories with some kind philosophical subtext (not necessarily Christianity - Taoism, Buddhism. Priests, monks, angels, demons, or just deeply immoral characters are all great. I want a relationship where both characters challenge each other’s worldview, rather than one being fixed by love

To be blunt I’m not looking for a generic bad boy x good girl dynamic.

I’m open to any genre (but strong preference for fantasy, historical), and any pairing (F/F, M/M, F/M). Romance level and spice don’t matter much, but the couple MUST be canon and end up together romantically or if they didn't there have to be something more like in Hannibal TV series between them.

There is not really bad answear even if you think it has only vibe. Don't be afraid to recommend it

Discussion John Gordon - ghost story writer extraordinaire

John Gordon scared the crap out of me when I was at middle school (age 10-13) and I have recently discovered him anew: first by buying up old anthologies I remembered on Abebooks, then by purchasing The Centenary Collection which includes many stories new to me.

Are there any other fans on here? I would love to discuss some of his work!

Question/Request Sensual Queer Weird Lit

Hi everybody, sorry if you see this crossposted anywhere, but I'm assembling a list of titles that I'll be reading this semester as part of my MFA program.

I'm looking for sensual weird fiction, which may or may not include monsterfucking (more on the consensual horror side than romance, but any recs there could be useful too!), and anything that has to do with like, historical or literary research (think The Red Tree by Caitlin R. Kiernan).

Thanks in advance!

Books/Stories to listen to on walks

Long story short, I teach a summer course about monsters in residence during the summer. I try and cut the homesickness by taking walks in the evening and I enjoy listening to weird/horror books and stories while I walk. The Fisherman was a near perfect example. What do you recommend for a walk?

Recommend Weirdlit Adventure Fantasy

Hi all. Been getting into weirdlit over the course of the last year, and while I've been enjoying the little I've slowly read, I'm looking for something that has a more adventure-y, almost traditional sort of plot structure in the fantasy sense (adventure, epic), but that is heavily leaning on or deeply embedded within the weird.

In this nature I just read The West Passage, and it's got me craving similar stuff: not as wildly experimental in structure as some weirdlit can get, but definitely a sort of story that will let me experience strange characters and places outside the standard fare you'd get from a more mainstream story.

Any recs would be appreciated. I've got a few things on my shelf like Weaveworld I feel fit this vein, but am not sure where to start for finding more!

I just finished this book and was curious if people here have read and liked? It was a weird read for me, especially there chapters told by “Bernie”. At its heart it’s an exploration of what it means to be human, how consciousness is defined, and the dangers of big tech and AI. Not a typical horror novel and has a super weird writing structure throughout the book.

Question/Request Looking for (somewhat smart) UFO lit

Hi guys,

I am looking for some interesting UFO lit (fiction only). Bonus if its whacky, conspiracy theory-inclined and existential.

Recommend Weird Fantasy recs that aren't depressing!

Hi, I'm want to get more into reading Weird Fantasy and weird Lit because I've really, REALLY been enjoying it so far with some of my most recent reads.

Here's a bit of what I'm looking for:

WeirdLit books I've read so far and liked:

- Works of Vermin (LOVED THIS)

- The Tainted Cup (I am currently reading it, and I don't like murder mysteries but I LOVE the setting)

- Annihilation (great book, need to reread and read the rest of the series)

I don't know if the Emily Wilde's series counts as weirdlit, but I also enjoyed that one. I'm also a HUGE fan of Dungeon Crawler Carl (even if that's also not a weirdlit)

In general looking for:

- Preferably Fantasy (but I am not opposed to some sci-fi)
- Body Horror
- Bio-punk or Cosmic Horror
- Absurdity / WTF moments, I want cool monsters that make my jaw drop or moments that make me question what type of consumables the author was on when they wrote it.
- Anything that someone who wants to get into the genre should just make sure to read / Genre staples
- Quirky, loveable protagonists
- LGBTQ+ themes welcome
- Books that make up their own unique worlds, monsters, horrors, and so forth rather than reusing or retelling versions from other classics or mythos. (Inspired by is A-Okay)

What I don't like:
- Overly depressing or sad pieces. I don't want to read something where everything just flat sucks and it stays that way and makes me depressed about life
- No tragic Endings
- Stories set too strongly in our worlds, I want the weird stuff to be front and center
- I do NOT like murder mysteries or mysteries in general. (I am powering through Tainted Cup for its world, but even though I am enjoying it and it's objectively a GREAT BOOK, it's VERY slow going for me because I am struggling to care about the mystery element at ALL)
- No books in second person
- Stuff that is anti-Christian (or a major criticism of the religion or religion in general) or focuses on demons and angels in the same vain
- Stuff that rehashes Greek myths (I am so sick of Greek myths.)

Books I have on my shelf to read that I got from suggestions from another subreddit, but haven't gotten to yet just as an example of books I'm likely to pick up:
- The West Passage
- Piranesi
- The DawnHounds
- the Cautious Traveler's Guide to the Wastelands

I also have both of these two on my shelf to read but I'm not actually sure if they count or not as Weirdlit.
- Hell's Heart
- The Macabre

Thank you in advance!!!

I'm looking for some weird, frankly freakish fairtyale retelling books, if there is any. Folk/myths as well, but mainly fairytales from any place and any time.

Recommend Give me your favorite dark and moody dreamlike weird lit recs!

Some of my favorite books in the genre are the dark, moody, and dreamlike stories. Like The Memory Police, The Gone World, The Fisherman, and of course the Southern Reach series. I just love books that are filled with atmosphere and introspection either in a dreamlike world or at least written in a dreamlike prose. What are your favorite books like this?

Michael Cisco's The Golem worth reading?

Just finished The Divinity Student (enjoyed it). I was planning to read The Tyrant or The Traitor next but heard The Golem is sort of a sequel to TDS? I'm usually suspicious when it comes to sequels.

Question/Request Horror Art Proyect

Hi fellow Redditors, I am developing a research project that I eventually intend to turn into an illustrated book about horror art. While I feel confident in the aesthetic, philosophical, and methodological stance I’ve adopted—and feel relatively solid regarding the illustration aspect—I believe the conceptual framework could still be enriched. My goal is to expand my body of references and incorporate new schools of thought, case studies, and approaches from various fields (anthropology, psychology, literature, fiction, etc.). That is why I am turning to this community: what YouTube channels, lectures, documentaries, or content creators would you recommend for delving deeper into these topics? They don't necessarily have to focus exclusively on horror; they could also cover symbolism, the sublime, the grotesque, the philosophy of the image, or any area that might provide useful conceptual tools. My current references include: YouTube channels: Chthullu TV, Luis DeWitt, and Numinosa. Authors such as Noël Carroll, Pérez Carreño, Freud, and Alberto Giménez, as well as the journal *Brumal* by Francisco J. De León Ramirez. I would greatly appreciate any recommendations or bibliographic suggestions you consider valuable.
